  • Fantastic footage. As one fellow said, great shots of the Viaduct Hotel (torn down in the 1950s) and Mt Royal Station (now the Maryland Institute of Art). Trains still pass through those train sheds. Alas they are now CSX freights.

  • Wow. What an absolutely fabulous video. I'm so glad that you were able to save this and share it with all of us. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video.

  • Great footage...some unique and rarely photographed operation.

One caveat...the footage is not edited in geographical order from Athens to Baltimore...otherwise OUTSTANDING!

  • @mmi16 It doesn't surprise me that some scenes are out of order. We did the trfip in '47 and again in '48. My dad spliced them in order, I'm sure, but over the years they came unspliced and I finally just combined the best of both trips into something that looked interesting. If/when I get time I will try to put them in order and will keep you in mind to help with that task.

  • I'm glad i saw this--good footage of the old B&O. I rode the Amtrak's Capitol Limited for the first time--a wonderful experience--this was back in September coming from Washington DC to Chgo.

  • What a fantastic video. My trips at age five were from suburban Phila., Pa to Babylon, LI.with no films to show for it. that trip was not awesome as yours. Thanks for sharing

  • WOW that is just amazing. Hard to believe that was once a normal trip with routine sights. We really had it made once upon a time. Thanks.

  • Bravo. From the EM-1's slugging up towards Terra Alta to the C&O "Chessie" Hudson at Ivy City, this is nothing short of fantastic.

  • WOW!!! I really enjoyed this video thankyou for putting this on! My grandpa is a huge B&O fan he grew up in Youngstown Ohio and has always told me stories about the days of steam. It was really cool seeing the early diesels in this video those things were really shining:)

  • What a fine collection of both film and memories. I traveled by train, by myself age 7, to New Orleans in 1945 on Southern R.R. The conductor introduced me to the train crew and I was given a tin cup of coffee which I suspect was mostly milk. I've been hooked on trains ever since. Thanks again for saving and sharing your dad's films!

  • Igrew up near the 170 milepost on the formwer Parkersburg Sub.Shame all that history was torn up in '92'.Thanks for a great video. Now it can live forever on the net instead of just being in your collection.

  • Nice Movie and RIP B&O

  • Wow, wonderful classic footage, gothpapa. Aside from the historical aspect, living just a few miles from the former B&O St. Louis main line in West Virginia (now abandoned and a state rail/trail), which, of course, was once part of the Cincinnatian's route, your film was especially interesting to see. Thanks again for sharing!

  • Fabulous footage! Thank heavens some people had the foresight to record things like this!

  • WOW... you can see the WALL by Magnolia under construction. Fantastic! -Jeffrey

  • INCREDIBLEEEEEEEE! Thank You!!!!!!

  • This footage is fantastic. It captures just about everything I love about the B&O. My dad was born in '42, and would always tell me about the days of steam on the old B&O when he was a child. I grew up near the Thomas viaduct and have lived around a lot of these scenes in your clip my whole life. Thanks for a great video.

  • This old railroad footage is tremendous! I appreciate you sharing this with those of us who were born too late to experience this era.

  • Thanks, glad you ejoyed it. And don't forget, today's commonplace is tomorrow's "tremendous".
