@JoshuaMagbual I have two H200's and the quality is about the same for both. I primarily shoot in 720/p60 (not 1080i) - My video quality is set to Super fine (SF), antishake is on, and everything else set to default. I reduced the frame rate to 25fps (avi) using format factory to lower the load on my computer and converted the video to WMV format in Magix Movie Edit Pro 16 (including editing). I don't actually have a Mac so I can't comment on final cut pro. Hope this helps.
@lturner345 why shoot at 720 60p if you later convert it to 25? doesn't the "i" mean it only shoots 30fps and just duplicate each frame so you get 60? wouldnt it be better to get full hd and 5 more frames per second?
@ferencowa The default frame rate for this camera is 60 fps (no 24/25/29.97/30 option available). . Your output choice has to do with your requirements. For example. the default DVD standard and Standard Definition TV is 480P/ 29.97 (30) fps,(720x480).
Movie Theaters like 24P. For online streaming 720P (20-30fps ,1280x720) is the standard due to Bandwidth restraints. 1080i/p limits many viewers due to broadband limits & for disk distribute you commonly need blueray.
@lturner345 Whether you use progressive scan or interweave, it shouldn't make alot of difference in your video quality . For the purist, Progressive scan should result in a better image but in a consumer grade, single CCD unit, that is probably not going to be much of an issue. Unless you have alot of fat action, 24/25 fps should give you great results, in fact cinematic filming is usually finalized at 24fps for the big screen. Hope this information helps.
What settings did you use on the Samsung HMX-H200? If you look at my newest video (I am not doing this to get views) I am using that exact same camera and the video quality is crappy. Please tell me the video settings you used!
@PixelTheBig I set my camera for 720P with the resolution set for SF (Super fine). This information might help you: 1) I noticed your room lighting isn't that good. A rule of thumb is to keep the light over your shoulder (behind the camera) and have a diffused light source over our subject. This camera has great lowlight capabilities for it's price but no camera likes bad lighting. 2) You can draw more attention to your subject by using a dark drop cloth in the background as well.
@lturner345 It will also help eliminate reflections from other surfaces that might trick the camera. Remember, your best friend in filming is lighting, The ability to direct it and manipulate it is paramount to good video. Hope this helps!
I was hoping to post a great video review of the Samsung H300, but while they have added some nice things such as a 30x zoom (vice 20x) , the ability to pause during recording, and increased the battery life to around 3 hours. They actually sacrificed video quality. While still very good, I notices the focus was softer and low light performance was noisier. The new design also takes away the ability to use add-on lenses. Does the pros outweigh the cons? I'll stick with the H200.
where did you do the recording at 1:58? i'm in California and we never see harvestmen...let alone that big! for the price this is a really impressive camera
@MrTrbo2na All the video and pictures were taken in Minford, Ohio! Glad you liked it.
I also have a Samsung H300 but the H200 still has the best video quality, (sharpest image detail and lowest noise in low light, so unless you need the 30x zoom and the ability to pause during recording that the H300 offers, I would still recommend the Samsung H-200 that did this video. Are you listening Samsung?
@MrTrbo2na This is actually taken in Minford, Ohio. Most of the footage is taken around my own property with the exception of the ballgame. Glad you liked it.
@cleverschannel While you can add filters, or even use adapter lenss for wide angle or telephoto, the main lens is built in so that is one option you can't change. There are some new camcorders coming out however that offer that option including Sony and Canon. Hope this helps.
@daredevil3x I'd recommend at least a Class 6 , (or to be on the safe side), class 10, especially if a lot of motion is involved. With that said, I still have a Class 4 PNY that I have used now and then that seems to work just fine. In the ratings world, media is tested to meet a certain specification, but that doesn't mean it might work at a faster specification. Hope this information helps!
@iMaySaveTheWorld The only real changes I make is to the frame rate. My older computer doesn't do well with 60fps so I reduce the frame rate to 30 (29,97) before editing. For the price, this is a great camera. If you find you need external audio or 24/25 native frame rates. then you might want to look elsewhere. Canon has a great line to choose from.
@SubaruRider53 1. On our view screen, press "Menu" button on upper left. 2. Select "Focus" Icon. 3. Select "Manual" Focus. 4. Use Left or Right arrow buttons to defocus your image. 5. Start recording. 6. Adjust arrow buttons to bring image back to focus. That's all there is to it. Things to consider" Get close to your subject in order to get the most out of this effect. If possible use a good weighted tripod to minimize camera shake as you adjust your focus. Have fun!
@EpiCPerfeCt Youtube provides a great venue for you to do just about anything. While I may or may not post something due to it's relevance to what I am doing and, in this case, if it really supports real life use of this camera; there is a great viewing audience out there looking for information on it. Feel free to post your own on youtube and see how it goes. Good luck!
@Joseph4Lakers It depends on your needs. The Q10 has a switch grip for left/right handed users, takes 5mp stills, supports 1080i hi-def and supports much of what the H200 does including time lapse. The BSI-CMOS sensor is smaller (1/6 vice 1/4) which MIGHT reduce overall image quality and low light performance but I haven't tested this and the Q10 has a 10x instead of a 20x optical zoom but that's not a big deal. either. . Smaller size makes the Q10 it easier to carry so it's your call.
@iNohaab I use the software that came with the camera. The software that is included in the camera is called "intellistudio" and runs as soon as you hook the camcorder up to your computer. You then have an option to install the software on your computer or run directly from the camera. I pulled all the stills off my video using the still capture option that is part of this program. That's actually all I use intellistudio for, but it does a great job at it. Hope this helps.
@MrJosephCC No fish eye options. It does have the usual sepia, black and white. negative, and, of course, variable speed time-lapse. i-Scene modes include Auto, Sports, Portrait, Spot light, Beach/Snow, Food, Candle Light and Indoor. As far as wide picture, I assume you mean format options such as 16:9 vice 4:3 which, it does. It films and takes pictures in wide screen format which is perfect for most modern hi-def tv's. Hope this helps.
@Tvanom You can actually choose from three different resolutions via the camera menu. 1080i 60fps or 720P 60 fps (hi definition) and even 480P 60 fps (standard definition) and with those you can choose from several different compression rates although I tend to use the super-fine option. The file size can get quite large with any of today's hi-def camcorders so editing your footage length beforehand might be a good idea. Hope this helps you out!
@Tvanom The audio quality, while not stellar, isn't all that bad. The camera I have does generate some noise when using the optical zoom but not all that annoying, I didn't notice any noise while panning or during normal operation. I also have a video posted called "Samsung HMX-200 low light video footage" that I filmed at Disney World in Orlando which should give you an idea of the audio from this camcorder. So you might want to check it out. Good luck!
@Tvanom No, it records in 1080i (interlaced). Not a problem for my usage and the 1080i footage looks pretty good to me. I've seen the progressive/interlace argument many times and the best thing I can tell you is to use your own judgement on this one. Unless you're viewing directly on your hi-def tv or recording to blue-ray, it probably won't matter too much. DVD supports only up to 480P and anything over 720P is difficult to stream on the web. It is great for video editors though.
No, these are real. I was very impressed myself and I think the backlit CMOS sensor had alot to do with this. Most of the footage was done within a couple months of getting the camera. I used the included software to pull the stills off of the actual video footage so I had my choice of while stills I used, but no photoshop. I didn't use the camera's photo option since it isn't as good. I just made a video of its low light capablities from a Disney trip I took in September. Check it out.
Just wanted to know, is this truly homemade ? No marketing or something behind this vid ? I'm not joking, the image quality looks really good and the stills are awesome, but maybe too crystal clear for only about 300$. No photoshop manipulation or something ?
I'm curious more about it indoor and low light capabilities. That shot with the spider didn't demonstrate low light very well. And what about stability during motion shot? These 2 things I need to know before buying. What are the result if I move my camera while recording? Etc
@Cam5X5 A real life example video is always best. I'm putting together a video composed of low light/ problem lighting situations from my Orlando Disney Vacation I took in the fall. If you want to convey or set mood, Disney is the expert and they use alot of low key lighting on their rides and such. I should have the new video posted sometime this evening. In fast action shots, you may need to shut off the smart OIS at times but with experience you should get great motion footage as well.
@Cam5X5 This is a link to my latest real life low light video test from my Disney Vacation. You will see some noise in this video since many of the scenes deal with very low light levels. I did have to reduce this from 60 fps to a more managable 29.97. Nemo has a lot of 3d lowlight video that most cameras won't even lock on, Festival of Lights & Fantasmic had many difficult lighting situations, Th Rainforest cafe is very dim to add atmosphere. youtube.com/watch?v=Y-_8Oz6a5ro Enjoy
@heheani This is the regular H200. The H200 has no built in memory so you need to supply a SDHC card but I actually like using removable media. I just bought a second one last month to help out at a wedding for $234 and so far I am happy with both of these. Great Video quality for a low price. What's not to like? Enjoy your purchase!
@22xx22xx22xx Haven't tested this but the Vixia hf m300 reviews look good, although several mentioned that low light performance is not that good. Pros for the Vixia hf r20 include high bitrate support (24 mbps) , external microphone support and Internal and relay recording. Cons: Low-light recording is noisy, battery life around 1 hour. The samsung has good low-light response, a 2 hour battery BUT no external mic or replay record support. Bottom line...what do you need it for?
@lturner345 Update: the low-light performance statement I made is for the hf m300. If you plan on shooting in normal to sunny outdoor situations or decent indoor lighting than any one of them will do a great job for you. External microphone support by the canon models is a big plus, while the long battery life and good low light recording is a plus for the samsung. I'm sure you'll be happy, whichever you choose. Have fun!
@verychillout The canon hf r100 is the only camera in this price range that supports an external mic which would be a big plus for bloggers . The video quality is not the best with the default factory settings but are satisfactory when you set everything to highest quality. With that said, users do complain about internal audio noise generation bad low light response and short battery life. If you don't plan on using an ext mic, choose the Samsung HMX-H200.
@verychillout I actually bought a bunch of these albums a couple years ago when they were having a special "after Christmas" sale. I doubt they have any individual download links for this one, but you could keep your eyes open for special sales throughout the year. Digital Juice has a lot of special effects software available and they go on sale from time to time, however I really miss their older jumpbacks and Editor's Tool Kits.
@lturner345 today, March 12, 2011, Digital Juice has the stack traxx volumes available for $29.95 each or any 5 volumes for $99.95. Hope this information helps you out. It's always nice to have quality sound beds available for your videos.
@pdasiek In low light, the H200 wins with no question due to it's BSI CMOS sensor, which also happens to be larger than the Canon r16's CMOS sensor. The R16 does have 8 gigs internal storage with a SDHC card slot supporting relay recording which will appeal to some users, but it also uses electronic stabilization instead of optical stabilization (used by the Samsung H200) and that makes stablization tougher. Both should work well in normal daylight outdoor use. Your call
Do you recomend this camera for casual use? My dad is looking for a new one, for filming family, vacation, snowboarding, nature and stuff like that. We have a 50" fullhd 1080p 100hz plasma, so I think we want to use it for playback on that one. Will this camera be good for this, or do we need to get a better camera?
@zelly2k9 For casual use, this camera is great. The battery life is around 2 hours and the video quality is great, however if you have a crash while snowboarding, it's history. Most consumer camera's including this one are made of plastic and won't survive a crash. This camera supports up to 1080i/60, not 1080P so you also need to decide if that makes a difference to you. I've used it for a week in Walt Disney World, a couple weddings and filming a weekly church sermon. Works great for me. :)
Want to shoot the moon in great detail without just seeing a bright ball? It's easy with this camcorder. All you do is select "Menu", Hit the down arrow on left, Select "Shutter Speed" and change to manual, move slider all the way to the right (1/1000). If it's still too light, change Aperture to manual and adjust it from F2 to around F11. Don't worry about resetting. The camera will do that for you when you shut it off. Have fun!
@simulation17 4 gigs will give you roughly 42 minutes in 720P. I don't normally film in 1080i. It will last less time if you're recording alot of action footage as opposed to a static scene with little motion. This is due to the way the compression scheme works. The camera generates a new file about every 20.5 minutes and leaves a 1.5 second gap in 720P mode so be aware of that when filming. I got another one of these camera's for the wedding I did this past week-end. It did a great job!
A further development: I tried to view my videos through the camcorder LCD but it shows an exclamation mark against each! When I try to record a video it gives me a Write Error message and the icon of the card shown on the LCD display has a little yellow triangle with an exclamation mark - I wonder if my card f*cked up? I tried to re-format within the camcorder again but it quickly tells me I need to insert card!?
In a way I think by formatting the card through the camcorder things have become worse, in that I can't access the files when I connect the camcorder via USB to my PC - which I was at least able to do when the card was used out of the box - I still don't understand why a card should be formatted (let alone several times a year according to some people)? Can I restore to my card to the way it was prior to format? Any advise wil be greatly appreciated!
@sprawl678 The card may have become corrupted. Did you try a non SDHC SD card in your computer like I mentioned before? They only go up to 2gb but are fine for testing this problem. I believe your computer may have come out before SDHC cards were standard and therefore cannot recognize them properly. This can be easily verified by testing with the older card format which I believe will work just fine on your computer. If that works, you'll need a card reader that suppors the SDHC format.
@sprawl678 Kodak among other companies make card readers rated for the SDHC format. Formatting cards is not something you should be doing all that often. What is happening (most likely) is the card is not compatable with your computer. When it trys to format the card, it is actually corrupting the data that currently exist on the card. Hopefully your card can be restored but unless you have funds for a new computer, try a SDHC card reader. Hope this helps.
@sprawl678 Sandisk clas 10, right? A Class 1 would most likely drop frames. Did the video look wavey/out of focus on the camera? If not, could you give me specs on your computer? I haven't experienced the hum you mentioned on mine but if an update is availalbe, it's worth installing. Inteli-Studio might crash if the system resources is low on your computer, Try filming in 720P and turn off stabilization to see if that makes a difference. Just curious. Let me know if that helps.
@sprawl678 If it does better with 720P footage, it is possible your computer might be having trouble handling the demands of 1080i/60fps video. Upgrading to a better video card, more ram or a faster CPU could help you deal with this, or if possible upgrade to one of the newer Core i5/ i7 computers with dedicated graphics card. You won't be dissapointed. Good luck!
@lturner345 @lturner345 Hi thanks for your suggestions - really odd but I think gremlins were at work...
1)connected via USB and THEN switched it on - got message to update Intelli-Studio so that got sorted.
2)the choppy Full HD video is like this when played with VLC but when used Windows Media Player everything is fine, although I do think 720p is more smooth that 1080p when moving around - what do you think?
@sprawl678 Some programs use more resources so inthis case Windows Media Player was more forgiving. Of course a new computer is always expensive so you can probably live with those settings. Unless you plan on using blue ray, DVD's only support 480P and most people won't try to watch anything over 720P online due to bandwidth restrictiions. 1080i is nice for your hi-def TV though. :)
3) need to transfer some files from PC to card to update firmware re noise but get error message card is write protected - searched around the net but most people had forgotten the physical latch to "locked" position - mine shows unlocked - any ideas what I can do here? The noise isn't that noticeable, just curious if it will make a difference. Thanks for your help - its a pretty nice camcorder!
@sprawl678 I actually load files on my SD card from time to time without any problem. Have you tried another USB port with inteli-Studio shut down? Might help. Do you have an older SD card to load the files on?
@sprawl678 Try deleting them from outside Intelli-Studio using "My Computer" or Windows Explorer" Make sure Intelli-Studio is shut down first. Smart_auto works well in most cases but if you have alot of challenging light situations, you might want to use manual aperature. Of course, for special defocusing effects, manual focus is a must. Great video requires great audio so I'd recommend getting a portable audio recorder and mixing in post. I have an Olympus LS-10 but there are many others.
@lturner345 I tried deleting through My Computer when I-S is shut down but doesn't work - same error about write-protected. I wonder if I should format my card using the camera function? (I'm using it out of the box at the moment). Don't know if its such a good idea - didn't have to do it on my XD card for my Fuji camera...really odd.
@sprawl678 1. Try formating the card though the camera; I'm willing to bet it works and then test it again in the computer. If you still can't delete files through you computer, there's an outside chance your computer has problems handling SDHC cards, some older models do. You can verify this by purchasing or borrowing an older 2 gig or less SD card (non-SDHC). They are pretty cheap and see if that clears the problem. If it does, you'll need to purchase a SDHC card reader. Hope this helps!
@lturner345 Hi Larry - I formatted the card using the camera (read somewhere I shouldn't use the PC?!) and was able to do my firmware upgrade BUT now I can't transfer some videos I made as the card is not recognised by my PC (it suggests I format it which I dont want to do). So now I cant access the contents neither through Inteli-Studio nor through My Computer. This whole thing is a starting to be a huge pain in the A*S!Do I need a separate card reader? Is this going to help at all?Thank you.
Finally I managed to get the transfer process going but when complete the window didn't close and the program stopped responding like in the first case - don't know what to do here!I checked the directory and my files were transferredbut whole process seems unstable
3)Humming sound when playing video - don't hear any noise when camera is recording;I saw there is update for sound issues released by Samsung - shall I apply it ? - a bit hsitant since I dont know if this will make it worse
Hi Larry, my HMX200 finally arrived last week and and did some testing today but am concerned about a couple of things:
1) HD mode video - when played back on my PC every time I moved the camera while filming (even a little) everything becomes "wavey" and out of focus. Am I doing something wrong?
2)Inteli-Studio - when I connect to PC to transfer files the program seems to crash and I cannot close it have to go as far as restarting PC to clear opened windows- any updates to this program?
I'm having trouble deciding want camera I want. I want one that records in HD and automatically focuses by its self. Do you think this is a good camera for its price?
@shaaivaj The key word being "price". Yes, I don't believe you'll find a camcorder for $237.00 (current on Amazon that can touch this but it does depend on your needs. Here are the pro's"
1. Great Video Quality, Very Good Low Light Response,. supportsTimelapse, 2 hour battery (something I like). Manual Aperature, focus through your menu options (no focus ring) 5. Can charge through USB or Regular charging port. Cons: Mediocre Audio and no external mic jack. Hope this helps.
@shaaivaj If you have $799 to $1099 to spend, you can just up to the Canon Vixia HF SHF 21,Panasonic HDC-TM700 or Sony HDR-CX550v. These have higher end features such as support for external audio. The Canon unit has the best overall video quality of the bunch. The best low light goes to the Sony. The best one for people who like manual adjustments for everything goes to the Panasonic which also does great in low light. The Canon's one weakness is it is noisy in low light situations.
did you do anything special after recording this video, i just got my camera and its a factory refurb so that might be my issue, but the picture is terrible its very grainy and not 720p quality that i am trying to shoot in, could i be missing a setting
@MacGyver920 You obviously got hold of a bad camera. I'm sorry to hear that. If it is still under warranty, I'd suggest you get a replacement as soon as possible I can assure you that under normal operation this camera should give you great video results. I use this one to cover church sermons for local tv broadcast, large events such as the 2011 Ohio Men's Retreat and as a secondary camera for filming wedding events. It has so far performed admirably in all those areas.
A Canon 60D is like the world's best camera EVER! Many YouTubers have it, and ANY other HD cameras has like the crappiest quality EVER compared with a 60D!
@MacGyver920 The Canon 60D is a great SLR for both pictures and video. Other greats include the Canon T2i and Canon 7D which have the same quality video. The larger sensor size of these Canon's result in great video quality and also give you the additional depth of field that only an SLR can give. Even professional studio's are taking advantage of what these have to offer.
@mark1wtf I use both a Class 4 & 6 card off and on and haven't had no problems with either one but if you want to be on the safe side, get the Class 6. With current pricing on Amazon etc, you should be able to either of these at a decent price. Hope this helps. The new Samsung HMX-H300 is due out this month with a 30x optical zoom, 3 hour battery life and record pause capability for around $399. Price will get lower over time.
@simpledood Glad to hear you are enjoying your new camcorder. I just finished using mine to film the 2011 Ohio Men's Retreat at the Heartland Conference Center in Marengo, Ohio and am very happy with the results. I left both my Panny's in the bag. Hope you continue to enjoy your new camera!
@MacGyver920 You didn't qualify your statement and judging from your short, non-supported statement, it is obvious that you have very little experience with consumer grade camcorders. I do. If you have something to say, please take the time to give more informative feedback in the future. Thank You
@DetreProductions The audio is usable but like most camcorders not the best. If you're serious about quality audio, I would recommend you use a seperate audio source. I use an olympus LS-10 portable audio recorder for most of my recordings and mix them in post since this camcorder does not have an external mic jack. The video quality is great for something in this price range. Hope this helps.
@Fingerboarder3010 You should be able to get by with that system but it really is at the low end for video editing. Other things to look at include the video card, computer ram and hard drive speed. a 512k-1 GHZ Nvida or ATI graphics card would takesome of the load off your CPU, DDR3 or greater ram would be a plus for your computer and a 7200 rpm or faster hard drive would be nice. Wait a month or two and the second generation i3-i7 intel chips will be out in force. :)

Hi, I am thinking of buying the HMX H200 but am a bit uncertain about the type of SDHC card class in order to record 1080p HD movies.I read a review where the user comments that the user manual of the H200 recommends above class 6 and the make to be Toshiba, SanDisk or Panasonic. Is Class 6 sufficient or it has to be 10 - I am looking at a 16 GB Samsung Class 6 which the employee in the shop tells me will be sufficient? 16GB SanDisk Class 10 are expensive. Any advice would be appreciated.
@sprawl678 A SanDisk Class 6 card should be fine. I'm using one myself with no problems and I have used a generic PNY class 4 to record 720P footage with no problem whatsoever. One thing to keep in mind is your 1080 footage is actually 1080i (interlaced) not 1080P but I really doubt you'll notice any real difference although a purist might argue the benefits of progressive scan. Enjoy your camera!
@lturner345 Hi thank you for your quick response. I am thinking of getting a 32GB version but seems Sandisk don't do Class 6 of this size. Their 32GB is class 10.
Do you think the H200 will perform better with class 10 Sandisk card?
@lturner345 Sorry forgot to ask: I am looking at the Samsung HMX T10 which is slightly cheaper but seems pretty good too- which of the two do you think is better?
@sprawl678 It depends on your needs. I'm sure the newer t10 will do a decent job and it has the 20 degree tilt to reduce wrist fatigue. I couldn't locate any real reviews on it and couldn't find info on the actual sensor size (something important to overall performance). It has a 10x zoom instead of a 20x but that shouldn't be a big deal. If you pick one up, feel free to share your test results, especially low light performance. :)
@sprawl678 A Class 10 is rates at a much higher transfer rate than a class 6, so using the rule of thumb; Faster is better. With that said, a Class 6 card should have no problem supporting 1080i video. All my video has been filmed utilizing a Class 6 card and in rare occassion, a Class 4 card (720P) with no problems. Hope this information is useful.
@TheJRockGuru I haven't actually tested a Legria HH-R16 but I looked at some reviews.
Info-gadget has a decent review that you might want to check out. It has 8 gig ram built in and has an SD card slot supporting relay recording from the internal to external ram while recording. The downside is the smaller sensor will result in more noise in low light situations but that might not be a concern for you. Hope this helps.
The speed of focus change with the selective touch focus feature demonstrated at the start of your video (very nice vid, btw) seems to be about the same that I get (naturally). But there is a Youtube clip called "SAMSUNG HMX-H204 20x ZOOM OUTFOCUS TEST SAMPLE" that demonstrates _much_ slower changes. Any idea how they accomplished that? It sure would be nice to be able to control the speed of the focus change.
@madforsalsa Here's another useful bit of information. Get close to your subject and zoom in as well. Not only does this magnify your subject in respect to the background, it also magnifies the effect of your focus changes from one subject to another. The closer you can get, the better. The same goes with zoom, the more you can get away with, the better. I'm sure you'll enjoy experimenting with this now. Have fun!
Hey I just bought this camcorder and I am completely CLUELESS when it comes to cameras or camcorders.Somebody PLEASE help me adjust the settings for best quality. When I record, the quality looks nothing like the quality in this video
@theMLMremedy Under normal conditions, your settings should be: Iscene-Auto, Video Resolution-720P. Video Quality-Superfine unless you need the higher resolution. Turn on stabilization (3rd button, top row). That should give you great results under daylight outdoor or good indoor lighting situations. For newbies: try shooting zoomed out to lesson shake (walk in closer to have subject fill screen). Keep the sun (or any light source)behind you to eliminate flare ups and light your subject.
@lturner345 I gave the settings a try and it seems a little better but it still doesn't look as clear as your quality, what else do you think I should try?
@theMLMremedy Those settings should work relatively well under most conditions.
. A couple questions:
1. Are you shooting primarily in low light? Good lighting gives the best results with any camcorder.
2. Have you tried playing it back on other video devices or just your computer monitor? Make sure you have the latest video display drivers for your computer and also try hooking your camcorder up to your hi-def tv with included cable or an HDMI cable and see if that yields better results.
@lturner345 I recorded a clip outside (with more lighting than inside) and it looked way better than indoor recording. I only tried playing it back on my laptop but I will try playing it back on other video devices. 2 questions:
1. Would me using the recommended SDHC class 6 flash card improve the quality in the video? I'm currently using the regular SD card
@theMLMremedy 1. A Class 6 card is rated for much higher transfer rates than standard SD cards and that should result in smoother video (no lost frames) but it shouldn't afftect the sharpness of your video otherwise. I 'd recommend using a SDHC card anyway.
2. If you're new at this, I would probably stay with autofocus. I doubt you'll notice much difference using manual focus but feel free to check it out.
You might want to check another camcorder as well. Your's might have a problem.
@asdfhacks I believe he is just viewing this straight from the camera to either the computer or tv, but if he is converting it to another format first, that would make a BIG difference. Of course, then you have to talk about format, compression, bitrate, frame rate, etc.
@MrTerramittica I usually use 720P but I didn't notice any problems with the 1080i footage. The only noise I noticed ( and it was minimal) occurred when I was zooming in or out on a subject. Of course, if you need good audio, I'd recommend using a seperate audio source since many camcorders including this one, have relatively low fidelity sound. I use an Olympus LS-10 but Sony and many others make good digital recorders.
@1ShaneDawsonsBigFan1 I first reduce the frame rate using a free program called "Format Factory" (Google it) and I use "Magix Movie Edit Pro 16" to do all my editing although there are many other fine programs out there to choose from. This one cost $49 (basic) to $99 (plus edition) and the newest version is Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 which supports 3D editing.
@harryshimmin Actually they are the same camera. Most people don't bother to type out the HMX part in order to same characters/space in their replys. Consider it a type of short hand. :)
how did you make the quality so clean!?
I have the same cam, and it never gets as clean as your video test ):
I used it with a Mac Os and FCPX Program. could that possibly be the problem???
PLEASE HELP.
JoshuaMagbual 2 weeks ago
@JoshuaMagbual I have two H200's and the quality is about the same for both. I primarily shoot in 720/p60 (not 1080i) - My video quality is set to Super fine (SF), antishake is on, and everything else set to default. I reduced the frame rate to 25fps (avi) using format factory to lower the load on my computer and converted the video to WMV format in Magix Movie Edit Pro 16 (including editing). I don't actually have a Mac so I can't comment on final cut pro. Hope this helps.
lturner345 2 weeks ago
@lturner345 why shoot at 720 60p if you later convert it to 25? doesn't the "i" mean it only shoots 30fps and just duplicate each frame so you get 60? wouldnt it be better to get full hd and 5 more frames per second?
ferencowa 2 weeks ago
@ferencowa The default frame rate for this camera is 60 fps (no 24/25/29.97/30 option available). . Your output choice has to do with your requirements. For example. the default DVD standard and Standard Definition TV is 480P/ 29.97 (30) fps,(720x480).
Movie Theaters like 24P. For online streaming 720P (20-30fps ,1280x720) is the standard due to Bandwidth restraints. 1080i/p limits many viewers due to broadband limits & for disk distribute you commonly need blueray.
lturner345 1 week ago

PixelTheBig 1 month ago
@PixelTheBig I set my camera for 720P with the resolution set for SF (Super fine). This information might help you: 1) I noticed your room lighting isn't that good. A rule of thumb is to keep the light over your shoulder (behind the camera) and have a diffused light source over our subject. This camera has great lowlight capabilities for it's price but no camera likes bad lighting. 2) You can draw more attention to your subject by using a dark drop cloth in the background as well.
lturner345 1 week ago

I'll stick with the H200.
lturner345 2 months ago
where did you do the recording at 1:58? i'm in California and we never see harvestmen...let alone that big! for the price this is a really impressive camera
MrTrbo2na 2 months ago
@MrTrbo2na All the video and pictures were taken in Minford, Ohio! Glad you liked it.
I also have a Samsung H300 but the H200 still has the best video quality, (sharpest image detail and lowest noise in low light, so unless you need the 30x zoom and the ability to pause during recording that the H300 offers, I would still recommend the Samsung H-200 that did this video. Are you listening Samsung?
lturner345 2 months ago
@MrTrbo2na This is actually taken in Minford, Ohio. Most of the footage is taken around my own property with the exception of the ballgame. Glad you liked it.

what lenses etc will i need to get the best out of this camera???
cleverschannel 3 months ago
@cleverschannel While you can add filters, or even use adapter lenss for wide angle or telephoto, the main lens is built in so that is one option you can't change. There are some new camcorders coming out however that offer that option including Sony and Canon. Hope this helps.

whats the sd class minimun to use with the camcorder?
daredevil3x 4 months ago
@daredevil3x I'd recommend at least a Class 6 , (or to be on the safe side), class 10, especially if a lot of motion is involved. With that said, I still have a Class 4 PNY that I have used now and then that seems to work just fine. In the ratings world, media is tested to meet a certain specification, but that doesn't mean it might work at a faster specification. Hope this information helps!

iMaySaveTheWorld 6 months ago
@iMaySaveTheWorld The only real changes I make is to the frame rate. My older computer doesn't do well with 60fps so I reduce the frame rate to 30 (29,97) before editing. For the price, this is a great camera. If you find you need external audio or 24/25 native frame rates. then you might want to look elsewhere. Canon has a great line to choose from.

SubaruRider53 6 months ago
@SubaruRider53 1. On our view screen, press "Menu" button on upper left. 2. Select "Focus" Icon. 3. Select "Manual" Focus. 4. Use Left or Right arrow buttons to defocus your image. 5. Start recording. 6. Adjust arrow buttons to bring image back to focus. That's all there is to it. Things to consider" Get close to your subject in order to get the most out of this effect. If possible use a good weighted tripod to minimize camera shake as you adjust your focus. Have fun!

Samsung hmx 200 or the samsung q10
Joseph4Lakers 9 months ago
@Joseph4Lakers It depends on your needs. The Q10 has a switch grip for left/right handed users, takes 5mp stills, supports 1080i hi-def and supports much of what the H200 does including time lapse. The BSI-CMOS sensor is smaller (1/6 vice 1/4) which MIGHT reduce overall image quality and low light performance but I haven't tested this and the Q10 has a 10x instead of a 20x optical zoom but that's not a big deal. either. . Smaller size makes the Q10 it easier to carry so it's your call.

hi i just have a question how do you take the stills from the video is there a program for that?? and thank u 4 this video very helpful :D
iNohaab 10 months ago
@iNohaab I use the software that came with the camera. The software that is included in the camera is called "intellistudio" and runs as soon as you hook the camcorder up to your computer. You then have an option to install the software on your computer or run directly from the camera. I pulled all the stills off my video using the still capture option that is part of this program. That's actually all I use intellistudio for, but it does a great job at it. Hope this helps.
lturner345 10 months ago
Does this have any sort of fish eye option or effects?
Also can it shoot a wide picture?
MrJosephCC 10 months ago
@MrJosephCC No fish eye options. It does have the usual sepia, black and white. negative, and, of course, variable speed time-lapse. i-Scene modes include Auto, Sports, Portrait, Spot light, Beach/Snow, Food, Candle Light and Indoor. As far as wide picture, I assume you mean format options such as 16:9 vice 4:3 which, it does. It films and takes pictures in wide screen format which is perfect for most modern hi-def tv's. Hope this helps.
lturner345 10 months ago
with this camcorder, does it upload to youtube in 720p or do you have to change it to that in your editing software?
Tvanom 10 months ago
@Tvanom You can actually choose from three different resolutions via the camera menu. 1080i 60fps or 720P 60 fps (hi definition) and even 480P 60 fps (standard definition) and with those you can choose from several different compression rates although I tend to use the super-fine option. The file size can get quite large with any of today's hi-def camcorders so editing your footage length beforehand might be a good idea. Hope this helps you out!

people are saying the camera it self makes alot on noise so it ruins your sound.
Is this true?

Tvanom 10 months ago
@Tvanom The audio quality, while not stellar, isn't all that bad. The camera I have does generate some noise when using the optical zoom but not all that annoying, I didn't notice any noise while panning or during normal operation. I also have a video posted called "Samsung HMX-200 low light video footage" that I filmed at Disney World in Orlando which should give you an idea of the audio from this camcorder. So you might want to check it out. Good luck!
lturner345 10 months ago
@lturner345 ok, thanks.
also does it record in 1080p?
Tvanom 10 months ago
@Tvanom No, it records in 1080i (interlaced). Not a problem for my usage and the 1080i footage looks pretty good to me. I've seen the progressive/interlace argument many times and the best thing I can tell you is to use your own judgement on this one. Unless you're viewing directly on your hi-def tv or recording to blue-ray, it probably won't matter too much. DVD supports only up to 480P and anything over 720P is difficult to stream on the web. It is great for video editors though.

на виео написано что снималось 60 кадров в секунду. на сколько мне известно у неё только 50p
sergii50 11 months ago
No, these are real. I was very impressed myself and I think the backlit CMOS sensor had alot to do with this. Most of the footage was done within a couple months of getting the camera. I used the included software to pull the stills off of the actual video footage so I had my choice of while stills I used, but no photoshop. I didn't use the camera's photo option since it isn't as good. I just made a video of its low light capablities from a Disney trip I took in September. Check it out.
lturner345 11 months ago
Just wanted to know, is this truly homemade ? No marketing or something behind this vid ? I'm not joking, the image quality looks really good and the stills are awesome, but maybe too crystal clear for only about 300$. No photoshop manipulation or something ?

I'm curious more about it indoor and low light capabilities. That shot with the spider didn't demonstrate low light very well. And what about stability during motion shot? These 2 things I need to know before buying. What are the result if I move my camera while recording? Etc
Cam5X5 11 months ago
@Cam5X5 A real life example video is always best. I'm putting together a video composed of low light/ problem lighting situations from my Orlando Disney Vacation I took in the fall. If you want to convey or set mood, Disney is the expert and they use alot of low key lighting on their rides and such. I should have the new video posted sometime this evening. In fast action shots, you may need to shut off the smart OIS at times but with experience you should get great motion footage as well.
lturner345 11 months ago
@Cam5X5 This is a link to my latest real life low light video test from my Disney Vacation. You will see some noise in this video since many of the scenes deal with very low light levels. I did have to reduce this from 60 fps to a more managable 29.97. Nemo has a lot of 3d lowlight video that most cameras won't even lock on, Festival of Lights & Fantasmic had many difficult lighting situations, Th Rainforest cafe is very dim to add atmosphere. youtube.com/watch?v=Y-_8Oz6a5ro Enjoy

To confirm, this camera is the regular H200, not the H204 or H205?
It's ~$220 on Amazon right now and I'm in the market for an entry/mid level HD camcorder. It looks really nice.
heheani 11 months ago
@heheani This is the regular H200. The H200 has no built in memory so you need to supply a SDHC card but I actually like using removable media. I just bought a second one last month to help out at a wedding for $234 and so far I am happy with both of these. Great Video quality for a low price. What's not to like? Enjoy your purchase!
lturner345 11 months ago
so do you think I should get this or the VIxia hf m300 or the vixia hf r20 when it comes out?
22xx22xx22xx 1 year ago
@22xx22xx22xx Haven't tested this but the Vixia hf m300 reviews look good, although several mentioned that low light performance is not that good. Pros for the Vixia hf r20 include high bitrate support (24 mbps) , external microphone support and Internal and relay recording. Cons: Low-light recording is noisy, battery life around 1 hour. The samsung has good low-light response, a 2 hour battery BUT no external mic or replay record support. Bottom line...what do you need it for?
lturner345 1 year ago
@lturner345 Update: the low-light performance statement I made is for the hf m300. If you plan on shooting in normal to sunny outdoor situations or decent indoor lighting than any one of them will do a great job for you. External microphone support by the canon models is a big plus, while the long battery life and good low light recording is a plus for the samsung. I'm sure you'll be happy, whichever you choose. Have fun!

@lturner345 what's the song name?
btw, h200 or hf r100? in terms of shooting youtube blog videos and car videos - such as acceleration, sound, quality ??

verychillout 1 year ago

Digital Juice has a lot of special effects software available and they go on sale from time to time, however I really miss their older jumpbacks and Editor's Tool Kits.

who do U think, samsung h200 is better than canon r16?
pdasiek 1 year ago

Will this camera be good for this, or do we need to get a better camera?
zelly2k9 1 year ago

Have fun!

how many hours can i recrd at full hd to the max with a 4gb scan disk sdhc card?
simulation17 1 year ago

I tried to re-format within the camcorder again but it quickly tells me I need to insert card!?
sprawl678 1 year ago
In a way I think by formatting the card through the camcorder things have become worse, in that I can't access the files when I connect the camcorder via USB to my PC - which I was at least able to do when the card was used out of the box - I still don't understand why a card should be formatted (let alone several times a year according to some people)? Can I restore to my card to the way it was prior to format? Any advise wil be greatly appreciated!
sprawl678 1 year ago
@sprawl678 The card may have become corrupted. Did you try a non SDHC SD card in your computer like I mentioned before? They only go up to 2gb but are fine for testing this problem. I believe your computer may have come out before SDHC cards were standard and therefore cannot recognize them properly. This can be easily verified by testing with the older card format which I believe will work just fine on your computer. If that works, you'll need a card reader that suppors the SDHC format.
lturner345 1 year ago

Let me know if that helps.
lturner345 1 year ago

2)the choppy Full HD video is like this when played with VLC but when used Windows Media Player everything is fine, although I do think 720p is more smooth that 1080p when moving around - what do you think?
sprawl678 1 year ago
@sprawl678 Some programs use more resources so inthis case Windows Media Player was more forgiving. Of course a new computer is always expensive so you can probably live with those settings. Unless you plan on using blue ray, DVD's only support 480P and most people won't try to watch anything over 720P online due to bandwidth restrictiions. 1080i is nice for your hi-def TV though. :)

@lturner345
Sorry, forgot to ask - I wanted to delete videos/pics from within the Intelli-Studio interface but got this write protected message again - any ideas?
I am a novice "film maker" - is the "Smart Auto" the best way to make video on a point-and-shoot basis? Thanks.
sprawl678 1 year ago
@sprawl678 Try deleting them from outside Intelli-Studio using "My Computer" or Windows Explorer" Make sure Intelli-Studio is shut down first. Smart_auto works well in most cases but if you have alot of challenging light situations, you might want to use manual aperature. Of course, for special defocusing effects, manual focus is a must. Great video requires great audio so I'd recommend getting a portable audio recorder and mixing in post. I have an Olympus LS-10 but there are many others.
lturner345 1 year ago
@lturner345 I tried deleting through My Computer when I-S is shut down but doesn't work - same error about write-protected. I wonder if I should format my card using the camera function? (I'm using it out of the box at the moment). Don't know if its such a good idea - didn't have to do it on my XD card for my Fuji camera...really odd.
sprawl678 1 year ago

Do you think this is a good camera for its price?
shaaivaj 1 year ago
@shaaivaj The key word being "price". Yes, I don't believe you'll find a camcorder for $237.00 (current on Amazon that can touch this but it does depend on your needs. Here are the pro's"
1. Great Video Quality, Very Good Low Light Response,. supportsTimelapse, 2 hour battery (something I like). Manual Aperature, focus through your menu options (no focus ring) 5. Can charge through USB or Regular charging port. Cons: Mediocre Audio and no external mic jack. Hope this helps.
lturner345 1 year ago
@lturner345 Alright, thank you so much.
shaaivaj 1 year ago

The guy who made this camera should die slowly and painfully in a hole with bugs and shit and then burn and rot in HELL!!!
MacGyver920 1 year ago
@MacGyver920 You obviously got hold of a bad camera. I'm sorry to hear that. If it is still under warranty, I'd suggest you get a replacement as soon as possible I can assure you that under normal operation this camera should give you great video results. I use this one to cover church sermons for local tv broadcast, large events such as the 2011 Ohio Men's Retreat and as a secondary camera for filming wedding events. It has so far performed admirably in all those areas.
lturner345 1 year ago
A Canon 60D is like the world's best camera EVER! Many YouTubers have it, and ANY other HD cameras has like the crappiest quality EVER compared with a 60D!
MacGyver920 1 year ago
@MacGyver920 The Canon 60D is a great SLR for both pictures and video. Other greats include the Canon T2i and Canon 7D which have the same quality video. The larger sensor size of these Canon's result in great video quality and also give you the additional depth of field that only an SLR can give. Even professional studio's are taking advantage of what these have to offer.

Please Reply: what type of speed class do i need for this camcorder? Class 4 or Class 6?
mark1wtf 1 year ago
@mark1wtf I use both a Class 4 & 6 card off and on and haven't had no problems with either one but if you want to be on the safe side, get the Class 6. With current pricing on Amazon etc, you should be able to either of these at a decent price. Hope this helps. The new Samsung HMX-H300 is due out this month with a 30x optical zoom, 3 hour battery life and record pause capability for around $399. Price will get lower over time.

@MacGyver920 You didn't qualify your statement and judging from your short, non-supported statement, it is obvious that you have very little experience with consumer grade camcorders. I do. If you have something to say, please take the time to give more informative feedback in the future. Thank You

is the audio good?
DetreProductions 1 year ago
@DetreProductions The audio is usable but like most camcorders not the best. If you're serious about quality audio, I would recommend you use a seperate audio source. I use an olympus LS-10 portable audio recorder for most of my recordings and mix them in post since this camcorder does not have an external mic jack. The video quality is great for something in this price range. Hope this helps.

Do I need a good computer to edit the videos? I have a dual core 1.8 ghz. Is it enough?
This quali is amazing ;)
Fingerboarder3010 1 year ago

Any advice would be appreciated.
sprawl678 1 year ago
@sprawl678 A SanDisk Class 6 card should be fine. I'm using one myself with no problems and I have used a generic PNY class 4 to record 720P footage with no problem whatsoever. One thing to keep in mind is your 1080 footage is actually 1080i (interlaced) not 1080P but I really doubt you'll notice any real difference although a purist might argue the benefits of progressive scan. Enjoy your camera!
lturner345 1 year ago
@lturner345 Hi thank you for your quick response. I am thinking of getting a 32GB version but seems Sandisk don't do Class 6 of this size. Their 32GB is class 10.
Do you think the H200 will perform better with class 10 Sandisk card?
sprawl678 1 year ago
@lturner345 Sorry forgot to ask: I am looking at the Samsung HMX T10 which is slightly cheaper but seems pretty good too- which of the two do you think is better?
sprawl678 1 year ago
@sprawl678 It depends on your needs. I'm sure the newer t10 will do a decent job and it has the 20 degree tilt to reduce wrist fatigue. I couldn't locate any real reviews on it and couldn't find info on the actual sensor size (something important to overall performance). It has a 10x zoom instead of a 20x but that shouldn't be a big deal. If you pick one up, feel free to share your test results, especially low light performance. :)
lturner345 1 year ago
@sprawl678 A Class 10 is rates at a much higher transfer rate than a class 6, so using the rule of thumb; Faster is better. With that said, a Class 6 card should have no problem supporting 1080i video. All my video has been filmed utilizing a Class 6 card and in rare occassion, a Class 4 card (720P) with no problems. Hope this information is useful.

Is it better than Canon Legria HF-R16 ?
TheJRockGuru 1 year ago
@TheJRockGuru I haven't actually tested a Legria HH-R16 but I looked at some reviews.
Info-gadget has a decent review that you might want to check out. It has 8 gig ram built in and has an SD card slot supporting relay recording from the internal to external ram while recording. The downside is the smaller sensor will result in more noise in low light situations but that might not be a concern for you. Hope this helps.
lturner345 1 year ago
The speed of focus change with the selective touch focus feature demonstrated at the start of your video (very nice vid, btw) seems to be about the same that I get (naturally). But there is a Youtube clip called "SAMSUNG HMX-H204 20x ZOOM OUTFOCUS TEST SAMPLE" that demonstrates _much_ slower changes. Any idea how they accomplished that? It sure would be nice to be able to control the speed of the focus change.
madforsalsa 1 year ago
@madforsalsa Actually all you need to do is
1. tap the "menu" button located on the top left corner of your screen,
2. select "focus" from your menu option
3. selet "manual" focus as your option
4, use the left and right arrow buttons to adjust your focus as you see fit.
Hope this helps with your work. Have fun!
lturner345 1 year ago
@madforsalsa Here's another useful bit of information. Get close to your subject and zoom in as well. Not only does this magnify your subject in respect to the background, it also magnifies the effect of your focus changes from one subject to another. The closer you can get, the better. The same goes with zoom, the more you can get away with, the better. I'm sure you'll enjoy experimenting with this now. Have fun!

Hey I just bought this camcorder and I am completely CLUELESS when it comes to cameras or camcorders.Somebody PLEASE help me adjust the settings for best quality. When I record, the quality looks nothing like the quality in this video
theMLMremedy 1 year ago
@theMLMremedy Under normal conditions, your settings should be: Iscene-Auto, Video Resolution-720P. Video Quality-Superfine unless you need the higher resolution. Turn on stabilization (3rd button, top row). That should give you great results under daylight outdoor or good indoor lighting situations. For newbies: try shooting zoomed out to lesson shake (walk in closer to have subject fill screen). Keep the sun (or any light source)behind you to eliminate flare ups and light your subject.
lturner345 1 year ago
@lturner345 thanks a lot for the help I would have struggled testing for days
theMLMremedy 1 year ago
@lturner345 I gave the settings a try and it seems a little better but it still doesn't look as clear as your quality, what else do you think I should try?
theMLMremedy 1 year ago
@theMLMremedy Those settings should work relatively well under most conditions.
. A couple questions:
1. Are you shooting primarily in low light? Good lighting gives the best results with any camcorder.
2. Have you tried playing it back on other video devices or just your computer monitor? Make sure you have the latest video display drivers for your computer and also try hooking your camcorder up to your hi-def tv with included cable or an HDMI cable and see if that yields better results.
lturner345 1 year ago
@lturner345 I recorded a clip outside (with more lighting than inside) and it looked way better than indoor recording. I only tried playing it back on my laptop but I will try playing it back on other video devices. 2 questions:
1. Would me using the recommended SDHC class 6 flash card improve the quality in the video? I'm currently using the regular SD card
2. Would manual focus improve the quality?
theMLMremedy 1 year ago
@theMLMremedy 1. A Class 6 card is rated for much higher transfer rates than standard SD cards and that should result in smoother video (no lost frames) but it shouldn't afftect the sharpness of your video otherwise. I 'd recommend using a SDHC card anyway.
2. If you're new at this, I would probably stay with autofocus. I doubt you'll notice much difference using manual focus but feel free to check it out.
You might want to check another camcorder as well. Your's might have a problem.
lturner345 1 year ago
@lturner345 Will do, thanks a lot for the info you've been more than helpful

@lturner345 I'm surprised that you didn't ask him about his rendering options.
asdfhacks 1 year ago
@asdfhacks I believe he is just viewing this straight from the camera to either the computer or tv, but if he is converting it to another format first, that would make a BIG difference. Of course, then you have to talk about format, compression, bitrate, frame rate, etc.

I am thinking about buying this camera, do you have problem with buzzing noise on the 1080i settings? , Does it handle 1080i good?
Thanks :P
Nice test movie :))
MrTerramittica 1 year ago
@MrTerramittica I usually use 720P but I didn't notice any problems with the 1080i footage. The only noise I noticed ( and it was minimal) occurred when I was zooming in or out on a subject. Of course, if you need good audio, I'd recommend using a seperate audio source since many camcorders including this one, have relatively low fidelity sound. I use an Olympus LS-10 but Sony and many others make good digital recorders.

What editing software do you use?
1ShaneDawsonsBigFan1 1 year ago
@1ShaneDawsonsBigFan1 I first reduce the frame rate using a free program called "Format Factory" (Google it) and I use "Magix Movie Edit Pro 16" to do all my editing although there are many other fine programs out there to choose from. This one cost $49 (basic) to $99 (plus edition) and the newest version is Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 which supports 3D editing.
