This historic recording stands by itself as one of the finest and inspired interpretations of this literature ever made. Hugues Cuenod is an incomparable stylist and Boulanger's brilliant musicianship as leader here needs no comment for those who know the difference.
Prezioso e profondo. I've heard another version of this one by Mr.Cuenod and Mr.English, but this seems a bit longer in duration. So pure and inviting, and as clydesight said its tempo is very touching and personable. Speed is everything sometimes, and especially when it comes to something such as this. Perfetto, nothing less. Grazie mille.
I don't think 'interpretations', by definition, can be wrong. Boulanger's interpretation and choice of tempo may not be orthodox, but it works, and that's all that matters. You clearly like it, anyway :)
RIP Hughes Cuenod. Died 3 December 2010. Aged 103. They played this on Radio 3 this morning. I had tears streaming down my face stuck in traffic on the Commercial Road. Much needed beauty in this ugly world.
@markarama23 Indeed my error. Amazinger! I can't stop listening to this. It makes the rest of my life seem so banal and trivial. His voice gives a tantalising glimpse of a whole other world, beyond and far more beautiful than this one.
I like this performance very much. The tone of the singers is particularly touching. I also like the slightly slower speed. Some of the ensemble pieces seem too fast for my taste.
I heard this once backed by a recorder consort, but that was years ago and I've never found it since.
Very unhip of course (in the sense of "historically informed performance" - yet the slow piano accompaniment brings out nuances which the faster continuo as performed nowadays tend to obscure
@WJCairns Hooray for the unhip! Have you run into Noah Greenberg's take on this? (Russell Oberlin, Charles Bressler.) Similar tempo, tho' with old instruments in the backing; still, that old-fashioned generosity.
Apparently recorded in 1937, with Hugues Cuénod and Paul Derenne, tenors, Dino Lipatti, piano, Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental Nadia Boulanger, conducted by Nadia Boulanger.

I just found this -- it is a gem and I love the simple naivety of the performance. It has it's own beauty beyond criticism.

Superbe interprétation ! H. Cuenod et P.Derenne ont beaucoup contribué à faire redecouvrir la musique de Monteverdi en France dès les années 1925

This is gorgeous. When we perform it next week maybe we can work a few of Nadia's delicious riffs in.

A gem. Deliciously outdated. Thanks. :)

@MehdiCaps Lipatti is not playing in this recording - only on the Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes that these same singers did with Boulanger.
