@PoesKlap133 this has an HDR feel to it. i wouldn't classify this as true HDR. this is just brilliant post processing. any1 who thinks u can achieve these results straight from the camera is out of their mind. I shoot w/some of the best gear (canon 5dm2, canon 24-70 f/2,8 L, profoto strobes), yet i still can not achieve these results. every photo published in a fashion magazine or any billboard or any advertisement relies on much post work to look polished and presentable. ask david la chepelle.
what combination of lighting and camera settings do you use?
i always end up having a low ISO to avoid grain, a nice big aperture, and i put my flashes really bright to just overpower all the other light. i like the way my images come out, i just think i could probably find a better way of preserving battery power and not blinding my models
@DollFacePookie you just gona cook your flash tubes sooner than later! Shoot on 400 iso (Grain is barely even noticeable) Fastest shutter sync speed, flashes on half power and use the aperture to control flash intensity! <--- thats just a guide line more or less so you preserve your flash tubes and models eye sight! :)
Who can identify the type of lighting equipment he is using? Also, could it be connected to a portable generator? Arthur, you have everyone wondering about your post-processing techniques. Write a book - you would make millions!
@barbi1258 It looks like he's just using 2 light sources -- One studio strobe with a beauty dish attached -- One smaller strobe (Nikon SB700 or maybe Canon 580EXii?) firing into an umbrella. -- And he's got some pocket wizards to wirelessly control his strobes. He seems to be using some HDR effects in post. He's getting some great shots using very little equipment on location. Having two assistants is also a MAJOR benefit. Hope this helps you out!
@barbi1258 This stuff is powered by battery packs and there is almost no post processing done. When using strobes properly this is what you get straight out of camera.
@PoesKlap133 Professional retoucher? So in other words you fix incompetent photographers mistakes. If you get it right in-camera, no retouching is necessary.
@metronomic1 so, what are you made of then? what are your profession? how much do you know in the subject? why call out everyone as "sucking" if you have nothing to back it up? just makes me a bit questioning when you put things out like this.
@notfromchicago12 i agree with you. metronomic1 has not class. just hates on people. a big talker. he has a BFA in photography but can not show us his work. just a big talker. all bark and no bite. hiding behind a screen name. show us images that are perfect and published without post processing (high fashion glamour models). maybe you should contact Playboy, or Maxim, or Vogue, or GQ, or Elle, or designers and ask them if they accept RAW unprocessed images. they will probably laugh at you.
@metronomic1 you are wrong, again. NO PHOTO IS PERFECT STRAIGHT FROM CAMERA - - Every Image needs some type of post processing.. EVERY. if you are so confident that a good photographer can create amazing results just out of camera, show me examples.. show me your work since you seem to know so much, you're so confident, show me the photos you take. just curious. you seem to talk so big and know so much, yet have nothing to back it up with. just putting people down. does that make you feel good?
@metronomic1 contact all the major magazines/designers, ask them if their images are edited or raw from the camera. they hire the best photographers such as annie lebowitz and david la chepelle.. their works are all post processed. look at joel grimes, award winning photographer, his work is all post processed. he even has a video on here that shows how he changes backgrounds and manipulates photos. post processing is part of our society now. those that hate on it are the ones that can't do it.
@metronomic1 Im not even going to argue because its pretty clear you know nothing! If you got a BFA why the fuck are you watching this then? you should be so busy and pretty much shooting atleast 4 times a week and the rest of your time in post! Get real, you just a wannabe!
With that lighting setup its pretty much impossible to acheive that look in camera, hahaha, shoot raw and then post! Ive never ever heard of anything being untouched these days, this is heavily retouched!!!
@metronomic1 i dont agree with this whatsoeever... even if you have the best camera, the best lens, the best strobes, the best make-up, the best skin, every photo needs re-touching and editing. i shoot with profoto strobes (the best), i have a canon 5d mark 2 (considered 1 of the best - full frame 21 megapixel cameras) - i have all canon "L" lenses... i hire the best make-up artists, i shoot on full manual. yet i still can not achieve the results seen in this video. post production is necessary
Great behind the scenes clip, beautiful model, KILLER, location, and overall nice work (a little heavy on the smooth skin for my tastes). That said I would outsource the post production. I would much rather spend hours shooting than sitting in front of an LCD.
@MobiusCoin It would appear to me that the lighting setup= "Whatever works" and the post production was different for ever image. They weren't a consistent set in terms of the "look". Other than that I thought it was cool.
Why does everyone insist on asking about the lens that was used? What does that have anything to do with these images. This is a great video but the questions should be about what editing technics were used. I'm 100000% positive I have a better lens in my bag than what he used here but would never be able to get those shots since they are dependent on PS rather than natural raw style of photos
@JamesFreeman86 There is no "better" lens. All lenses were created for a purpose. The lens he is utilizing seems to fit his needs for the shoot quite well. Thus there is no "better" lens.
@QuantumEra There is a such thing as a "better" lens. I am a VERY established magazine photographer and know from experience. You can shoot the same exact shot with the exact spec lens with lets say a Sigma and a Nikkor lens and see different in quality. Better glass = Better glass. Still doubt it? Go buy a Bower 17-120 and a Nikkor 17-120 and see which one gets you a better shot.
@JamesFreeman86 Another magazine photographer I see. Its quite obvious a Nikon o a Canon lens would destroy for instance a Rokinon but in this case of the video he was either using a nikon or canon lens. I see your point however.
@JamesFreeman86 Better equipment doesn't make a better photographer. I love how everyone hates on people that are actually successful. This guy has done several shoots for a lot of mags and retailers. He knows what he is doing and what to use to get the shot he is looking for. PS can't do everything. You have to start with a good base to end up with quality in PS. There is an art to PS just as there is an art to shooting.
@potentinhibitor Better equipment doesnt make anybody better photographer but it makes you achieve better shots if you know how to use it, otherwise we wouldnt see EVERY photographer using lots of gear but instead they would use ONLY cams. On low light conditions, you cant do the same job with camera only than if you would have at least one off-camera flash, but I agree w/y about starting with good base.
what the fcuk with the questions asking about the lens he uses? Has this anything to do with the result? wake up. As most of you asking I guess you are amateurs...the most important thing that makes the difference in this shooting is the powerful lights......
I love the lighting/photography style. The model is beautiful as well but her underwear doesn't match the bra (i'm aware they are both leopard print but the print sizing/colors/hot pink distracts from the beauty of the print on the bra) and it kind of takes away from the picture.
Simple way.....meter for the ambient light , then underexpose by 2 stops. Adjust you flash output power or distance to properly expose for the model without changing you exposure settings. A general rule of thumb when combining ambient light with a flash is : shutter speed controls the ambient light, aperature controls amount of exposure from the flash.
once again, another great video. My question, photo fans can run you 1 to 2 grand, your using the same fan I got at Lowes. Are you running it from a genset, vagabond or 2500' power cord, do to your location?
@ptlofts well..... you got to have a diamond in order to have a good ring, right? same principle applies here, you got to have a good image and then polished up in Photoshop if you want, Photoshop ain't going to take an image
@vatansalvery If you are close to the beach, why not do it on location?, if you want to do it in a studio that's fine, be ready to spend some money on backgrounds and lights its much easier to control that on location
@arthurstjohn lol but no really if you know please tell me, i use photoshop but im more of a video guy so i dont use photoshop a lot but im familiar with the basics please help!
@OfficialPolkaDot Is there a youtube "How To" video that explains how to get pics to look like this by using photoshop? I have been asking this same question for a while now and can't seem to get my images to have that "pop" that i see in a lot of these videos.
@OfficialPolkaDot. If you want to make the colors richer in the background, you exposed for the flash lights, and underexposed the background (ambient light) how to do it? lets say your exposure for ambient light is F16 @125 ISO 100 If you make your flash to be F22 @125 well, you already are under exposing the background by 1F stop and if you increase the flash sinc speed to 250, well, your background will be under exposed by 2 full stops, practice, good luck
@XxDJCyberLoverxX No,not with the same camera settings, because a ND filter not only is going to alter your exposure in the back ground but also in the fore ground (the girl in this case), what you can do instead is to increase your flash power output if you are able to.
Actually, if you're running out of sync speed on your camera amping up the flash alone wouldn't help since the background would remain the same. By using an ND filter to make all the light darker and THEN increase the flash to increase the flash to ambient ratio.
@OfficialPolkaDot hi dear would you Like to Learn How to get these type of Vibrant Colour I know how to..... Just Let me Know if you are Still there.........
@mkashifqamar you'd just better learn photoshop. That's where the finish work happens. No photographer is going to get those effect with a camera alone. I don't care what you shoot. I've got the 5d mk II with the 24-70 2.8. Not even close to looking like that from the camera.
@crowinarow there is obviously post work on his stuff, but you can get it to look like that w/ out photoshop if you know how to light and use gels. having expensive equipment doesnt mean you know how to use it
@xposhr My good man, I'm not sure if you watched the video if you really believe someone can produce those effects without post production. No lights and gels are going to give you that effect. I'm sorry. If you think you can, or anyone has, matched something like this, then please post a link.
@ytwatcher123321 He is using two lights, one umbrella that will be the fill light, and the one that looks like a dish will be the main light, stop the video at 1:02 so you can see the set up main light will add harsh shadows to the subject that will be softened by the umbrella(fill light) you need to know the lighting ratio about 1 to 1/12 f stops between main and fill light
@TheGILBERTnetwork Uhm maybe cause I want to know cause I'm planning on becoming a photographer and wanted some tips? does it matter to you why I want to know?
very talented team. very impressive. amazing work by alen hakoopian on video, love the angles and frames... amazing work by video editor joshua himes, perfect.. hair and makeup looks fantastic melea jones... model jenny allford is on a supermodel status, her face / body / emotion on camera are stunning... photography and lighting are brilliant... breaththaking capture arthur st. john. i can watch this over and over again.

@ELKARASUCIA Curious, would using an ND filter achieve the same effect, if you're running out of sync speed on your camera?
XxDJCyberLoverxX 4 months ago
@XxDJCyberLoverxX No,not with the same camera settings, because a ND filter not only is going to alter your exposure in the back ground but also in the fore ground (the girl in this case), what you can do instead is to increase your flash power output if you are able to.
ELKARASUCIA 4 months ago
@ELKARASUCIA

@mkashifqamar yeah im still here lol
OfficialPolkaDot 3 months ago
@mkashifqamar you'd just better learn photoshop. That's where the finish work happens. No photographer is going to get those effect with a camera alone. I don't care what you shoot. I've got the 5d mk II with the 24-70 2.8. Not even close to looking like that from the camera.
crowinarow 3 months ago
@crowinarow there is obviously post work on his stuff, but you can get it to look like that w/ out photoshop if you know how to light and use gels. having expensive equipment doesnt mean you know how to use it
xposhr 3 months ago
@xposhr My good man, I'm not sure if you watched the video if you really believe someone can produce those effects without post production. No lights and gels are going to give you that effect. I'm sorry. If you think you can, or anyone has, matched something like this, then please post a link.

@OfficialPolkaDot You have three options mate.
1. LucisArt
2. Topaz Adjust
3. As @arthurstjohn said, ''hours and hours on photoshop''

@arthurstjohn What is the ratio of the lighting between beauty dish and umbrella?
minimite312 4 months ago
@ytwatcher123321 He is using two lights, one umbrella that will be the fill light, and the one that looks like a dish will be the main light, stop the video at 1:02 so you can see the set up main light will add harsh shadows to the subject that will be softened by the umbrella(fill light) you need to know the lighting ratio about 1 to 1/12 f stops between main and fill light
