I saw you're from Australia just as I am. I was getting $11 an hour, first year with no experience and without a formal qualification as a Child Care Assistant. If you go in with a qualification that's about $2 increase in your hourly pay. If you get a diploma so you are a Group Leader of a children's room you can expect at least $16 an hour and more depending on experience and maybe qualifications.
One of the higher paid childcare workers was the one with a Bachelor's Degree and she got $20 an hour as a Preschool Teacher. The Childcare Coordinator (The person responsible for the whole center's operations) gets the most but commonly not too much more than the Preschool Teacher. You need to do the job for the love of it and not the money.
Such an underpaid job.
