People who say that it was a long time for the go around call it was b/c he waits for a certain mark on the runway that says x amount of feet left on the runway, based on how many feet the plane needs to land, u can still land until you pass the runway threshold for that aircraft
the conditions were unsafe and if the pilot had landed the plane would be outshort of runway as i observed that he had passed the no.4 painted on the runway which means you are in trouble... good decision.
Looks like a microburst incident, also the engines take 12-15 seconds to respond to a full power command after throttles moved forward.
The pilot flying almost certainly commanded a full power go around at the first "wobble" however couldnt start the nose pitch upwards until airspeed had increased, not possible until engines spooled up.
Condintions like this warrant a direct approach with little or no flare. stay @ or about a 3-4oo ft / min descent rate. Reminds me of my early days in the simulator when not caring if I even hit the rw or not. Hard touchdowns are apart of flying and if your descent at touchdown is 3-4ooft/min the airplane can take it.
this shit wouldve happened with either an airbus or a boeing. i love how people with no knowledge of aviation try to make these "arguments" bout which airframe is better ... lol
I would have gone around at the point where the vid starts. It was a lost cause right from the start. Best just throttle up, gear up take a breath and try again.
Yeah ... I would have been a bit uncomfortable. Sometime back in the late 60's I flew into Kobe Japan just ahead of a Typhoon, the approach and landing were almost exactally like a bad wooden roller coaster.
Do none of you think that had the very experienced pilot been in an airplane that would allow him to actually fly the airplane, he would have been able to very safely land that airplane? Airbus products, 318 and newer, will not allow the pilot control of that airplane. Proper crosswind control techniques are NOT allowed by Airbus and they have programed the computers to never allow the pilot to use the proper flight control inputs.
@eekedout Oh my... the aircraft do NOT fly it self UNLESS the AP command is set... As long as the AP command is disengaged the pilots can handle the stick in ANY types of conditions... Dude, please come on... how on earth can you even make that comment?? In very strong wind, the pilots prefer a pilot landing instead of a autoland... The airbus dont have anymore programs than a boeing 737,except of the fly by wire system...
@izzypod They get weather info 5 mins or so before landing, this pilot knew what was in front of him way before he started on the ILS he should have not insisted so much crabbing the plane down the runway he knew he was out of landing space well before he pulled back and aborted the landing, very bad pilot indeed and would have been sacked if he was one of mine and reported to the CAA
@Macinabit Where you the in that cockpit and knew the conditions? Well no i didnt think so... STOP mocking the pilot before knowing what went wrong and how the weather conditions was.. He didnt crash, and he certainly didnt kill any passengers,so a good job from the pilots!
@ollo1982 My Dear Chap if you know anything about flying you should know that when he was on the ILS he would have had the ground weather data or not?. He was way over the landing area and was still crabbinbg it on down GOOD or BAD?. The Stability of the aircraft was a some points enough to make a go around OR Not?
I have a brother who is a Pilot in the UK and he would not have done that and yes he is mad. Learn about flying old chap.
@Macinabit Yes.. your brother is a pilot, and your father is captain and your mother is flightattendant?? strange that almost evry one have some kinda plane related stuff in the family... @ollo1982 No Just my brother, no captain my father is 80 and I am 50 so I think it would be very dificult!. I don't give a shit if he is mad so that makes two of us!. I am Speculating as well as you ??. Bad Pilot very very bad, infact it should have been put in the flight log. Should have gone around on the ILS or even at the start on trying to land. I would NOT have been happy on that plane and would have taken legal action against the pilot afterwards. Have a nice day.
@Macinabit Yea you would have taken legal actions afterwards... wonder who would have won that! You? or the pilot with most likely thousands of hours flying jets, with a well established airline backing him up?? Use your head dude! People would only be laughing at you... most likely would your brother laugh at you to :D :D :D
the conditions were clearly unsafe and the pilto made an excellent decision to make a go around. These guys are heros and the pilot deservs a vc or equilvent.
@lordlozz1 They are not heros. They are employees. Don't give them too much credit. The trash man is not a hero. The guy who rescues the plane crash victim without being employed to do same is the hero. Lifeguards are not heros. Getting paid to fly planes doesn't get anyone hero status in my world. Doctors who work for free to help children are heros. Doctors who charge money to save children are appreciated but not heros. Taking credit for being a hero voids hero-ism.
Although the pilot aborted the landing in the extreme gusty condition, he is a very experienced pilot who dared to attempt the landing and then aborted it when it became unsafe.
u guys are dum it was about a 50 knt tail wind andd the wing bounced wen he applied to much aileron so he had to over correct a few times and wen he<s rocking like that if he applied thrust agin ur risking the wing structre it could hvae warped the wings causing a derastic loss in lift stalling the the aircraft...that was executed text book...and better i would know im an A-380 test pilot
n1sK is right. GA started at 20. BTW: sound is not an instant thing. It takes 1 second to make 340 meters (in ideal condition) without any wind. And this could have been shot from a kilometer so the time it took to reach the camera and the propagation of waves due to wind is pretty much realistic. The pilot did what it had to do.

What a horrible pilot, that's what I hate about airline pilots all they want to do is land the jet. If I was flying and ever ran into croswinds/windshear that caused that bad of wing rock at the MDA I would have gone around. Wasting fuel and time is better than being dead.
But if you run out of most of your fuel, and the wind didn't die, you only get 1 shot at it, and if you fail - it's over. At least this pilot will land it from one of the tries.
TAP pilots are some of the best at handling crosswind landings. I used to watch them land at Terceira Island with some nasty winds and those guys are amazing.
Cross winds can be a pain to try and land in. Pilot did the right thing and went 'Miss'. They can land land like that most of the time. Winds most have been a bit too much for that one.

heavy crosswinds. the pilot did the right thing by aborting. it goes to show how powerful these planes are to be able to rocket out of danger just 100 feet from the ground. pilots earn their pay on days like this, not on sunny days in perfect condition. heck, i could land a plane in perfect conditions (well maybe not, but you get my drift).
Improper judgment to execute high-angle crosswind landing of commercial aircraft. Factors include self-induced pressure to land on runway despite adverse conditions.
The best approach is to alert tower of adverse conditions and request a more suitable runway. If not possible, request to be diverted to another suitable airport.
