@74ryanwolf ...even if there was 3G coverage where I live, I would much prefer a GPS app over constantly having to rely on a data plan. Google Maps is designed to attract service providers, not to benefit users.
@HybridFridge -_- by useless I mean we can "use" it, just not the way we should be able to. Take the iPod as another example of handicapped tech: it's basically a hard drive with media player capability, yet we cannot use it as such. Apple wants the user to depend on their software, just like Google makes the user depend on isp's for marketing purposes.
Is this US only? Can't find the turn-by-turn option on my Nexus One here in the UK, or maybe I'm being a bit thick - it shows directions and a 2D map but that's it.
I'm an iPhone user, I must admit, Google's free navigational apps could be THE killer app that gives edge to android. iPhone has a much larger app store, but none of the GPS apps in it is free, and none of them works as flawlessly as Google's.
Trust me, it doesn't work flawlessly with Google at all. In my town alone we had several bugs appear with the free GPS, several included wrong destination address, despite the correct address appearing on screen. Also, street view and such, yeah, forget about that unless you live in a major city also of course.
This nav system is awesome. better than expected, anyone that see's it in action wants an N1. puts my Garmin to shame. No need to buy maps updates. no wires, enter destination by voice.
Dude, do you even know how GPS systems operate? There is an App, there is hardware and there is maps. App in this case is Google Maps on Nexus One. Hardware is A-GPS and GPS. And actual maps are Google Maps which are loaded on-the-go (using 3G) when you run GM App. If it was CoPilot app, then you wouldn't need 3G as you store CoPilot maps on your SD card. Which makes CoPilot a standalone GPS system. Practically all phones use GPS, since A-GPS is not very precise.
That is the most amazing navigation app I have ever seen! You can do a lot with a 1 ghz processor in an android phone. Keep up the amazing work Google! :)
louder than droid, softer than iPhone. i wasn't doing a scientific test, but i think the iphone was a bit louder + clearer (less sound distortion). If i were you i would do some research into android. The Nexus One, is a GREAT (but a little ugly in my mind) phone, but ur running android, so privacy is one of my concerns
You will never see multi-touch on any other phone in the US other than teh iPhone. This is because US Goverment has made stupid software patent rights and shit. Apple has patent on multi-touch technology, therefor if someone wants to use it, they have to pay big to Apple. However, there is a rumour that Nexus One is coming with multi-touch in Europe because here we don't have such laws that will allow apple to put patent on multi-touch.
@legendata91 Apple has patents on gestures, not multi touch. any touch screen is potentially a multi touch screen. Apple merely patented gestures like their 'pinch out' zoom Multi touch is available on Android as an addon app.
I would like to see the validity of "pinch out" tested in a US court. It's not an invention, its a gesture... its almost as stupid as the patent for "swinging on a swing".
You don't understand a lot about patents do you? We're not talking about the gesture. We're talking about what the phone OS does when you use that gesture. Apple patented certain things that can happen when you use the gesture.
Google and HTC for instance could probably easily get away with making the phone fart when you use the gesture on the N1. Google and HTC also can't say they didn't see this coming, Apple warned them a year and a half ago.
Swinging on a swing sunshine, swinging on a swing.
Others have also warned Apple. You can't complain others are in the words of Steve Jobs, "stepping all over Apples IP", while Apple is actively stepping all over someone elses.
If you are defending software patents, then it is you who doesn't understand both the patents and the issues involved.
The only thing I don't like is you cannot use a friends name as a destination. If you have a freinds Address you should be able to say. "navigate to John Smith" and you should get directions to his stored address in your address book.
That would just take a firmware update big deal, If you tap the icon on the right, if your friends are in your contacts (places you been before and saved) it will be located under there. So many complaints, it cost nothing and yet people still complain.
no shit. dont be sorry. dont be a fanboy either. 1 ghz processor and amoled screen thats it. the other dozen android phones before it does everything else. if the sprint htc hero gets an amoled screen and 1 ghz processor it'll be better because of sense ui.
Can't afford it? You can get a G1 for about $99 now with 2 year contact, you can get a My Touch2 for about the same. Cliq is $150, Droid is $200, Nexus is $179 with new contact (2 years), why can't you afford one and the update to Google Maps is free on the G1, MyTouch and CLIQ with an update to Android 1.6, its already on Droid, Nexus and Behold 2 when its released.
Yeah I forgot about Wal Mart, they offered the thing for $100 with 2 year after I got gouged by TMO saying I needed to pay full pop (well $100 off) because I only had switched from AT&T 6 months earlier. If it wasn't for the fact I have 4-5mb download speed on their 3G network for $10-15 less than AT&T for the same service I might drop them like a rock.

does it store the maps on your phone or do you need a internet conection download them constantly?

It needs an internet connection but I believe it does store the route currently used so you don't come to a grinding halt when your service dies.
If you want to change destinations or such though, you're out of luck.
