@thehootz Check out some of the sound mods. It won't be BF3 quality sound (which I will admit is incredible) I always found that if there's a problem in ARMA, there's usually a mod or two that will at least partially fix it.

@Lastbreath187 Don't be little loser. I do have ArmA, yes it is amazing, but the AI can and other things can be glitchy it's a game that's amazing at times and terrible at other times. I have to mod a lot but it's no problem. I'm not into PC games that much maybe that's why I have trouble with it. Either way I enjoy COD more even if it is pretty half assed the multilayer is enjoyable with friends.

For a desktop pc, I would recommend ATI 5 series and above, and Nvidia 480 and anything above. I am not a pc expert though, and I haven't bought any new PC gear for well over a year, so you'll need to do a little research yourself.
I'm not a fan boy or something like that,but arma 2 is the most intense game made.I mean,bullets whizzing past you,the realistic ballistics,the danger of snipers and tanks,the split-second decisions,the near-instant fatality hits,the awesome graphics,and the most of all,the heat of ever battle.
You need to take your time playing this game, if you go run and shoot like most people do in CoD you will most likely get killed. And because this game is not like CoD most people will not find it fun and quit playing.
Arma is een very good game, at first i didnt like it now i do because i took my time learning how to play.
ArmA 2 is more of a tactical war simulator because of its realism. Battlefield / CoD / MoH are arcade style shooters.
ArmA 2 lets you create your own scenarios and everything so its fun to mess around with. Battlefield / CoD / MoH are is a lot more fun in general though because you don''t have to worry about the realism pissing you off.
@chacachaca11 operation flashpoint got the infantry ai right, and the animations for models, it didn't get right the models, guns, map editor, or graphics. haha both games are good, you just gotta learn to have fun with what you got.

@thorbpdk Yeah it can take a lot of work to get it up and running properly and even then it's not guaranteed fun. I think there's a mod that removes motion blur (or you can just disable post-processing from the video options).
I'm kind of a hypocrite here because I just officially bought it through Steam after my original comment and actually had fun playing it (even though it was just mindless running and gunning multiplayer). I recommend trying some mods.
@A9900960 Not exactly correct. Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis was the first, followed by a few OF expansions. There was then a split between Bohemia Interactive and Codemasters. Codemasters kept the rights to the name of the franchise and Bohemia kept the rights to the game engine. All these new war FPS's out: COD, MW2, BC2 and I want to wipe them from my pc and reinstall ARMA 2. Best war sim and it still has offline multiplayer, better yet make your own missions, fully customizable...they are way ahead of the game here. Loved flashpoint on my older system back in the day too. =D
The game looks awesome the only drag is that you need a high end computer to enjoy it. They should really slow down on all of this technology, 5-6 years ago 1GB RAM (for example) was more than sufficient, now we have 6-7-8 GB along with Quad cores. I gave up on the PC gaming simply because I don't want to have to play catch up all of the time buying hardware. In another 5 years whatever system that can run this game smoothly will be obsolete, it pisses me off.

@tillman40 1) You can use your PS3 controller as a gamepad, just google it. I'd recommend against playing a game like ARMA with a controller, but to each their own. 2) No. ARMA 2 was specifically made for the PC, and even if you could load an OS, the PS3 wouldn't be able to run it with its hardware.
That is actual gameplay. You can play players versus an army of AI, or player team versus player team verus CPU AI or many other variations. I played about 20 hours worth this weekend alone, it's ridiculously engrossing if you get a good squad together. Highly recommend people play Benny's Warfare mod (just join a server that runs it).

@TheBoomfire1 it depends on mission editor. see the videos from cooperative multiplayer mission over 30-35 players .if you look for some group to play cooperative missions you will discover a new game.
I will admit, a lot of games thrive off of unrealism(Arcade). But, the product is similar for the two types. Arcade's get shitty machinima, this game doesn't, it gets pro videos.
The graphics are perfect although the game has a few unrealistic areas like the parachute and explosion smoke. Still because the game engine is so good, mods can easily fix these issues.
i didn't say the gameplay was arcade-like, but the campaign. many of the missions are unrealistic for a military sim, like the bit when you're sent as a lone sniper. Marines are never sent in by themselves in the middle of nowhere, they work as a team
I enjoy Arma and Ofp especially, but I wish the devs had polished the campaign some more.
@lzoli18B ArmA 2 isn't a military sim, it's a commercial release of VBS2 which is a MilSim.
And i don't rememeber that mission.. unless you mean the first mission where you go in at night and call in strikes on the beach.. apart from that you never play as a Sniper, you play as a Force Recon soldier looking for HVTs and going on patrols to talk to locals and use UAVs and Shit..

This game is fun and all, and please, nobody flame me, but I don't really think you can call this a military simulator. Don't get me wrong, this game is pretty realistic and fun, but there's just no way you can get close to real war in a simualtor. There are all kinds of aspects of war that video games can't mimic. Things like psychological and phyiscal stress just can't be copied and put into a video game. Like I said, this game is realistic, but I don't think it should be called a simulator.
@MostEpicMango One of the fact i have noted is that at least in unmoded "realistic simulators" like OPF or Arma series, most of the battles are so short. And if you read about the real battles, you notice how firefights can last a whole day. Another thing is movies - in Saving Private Ryan, the beach landing battle took about 20 minutes. In reality it lasted a whole day too! And allies only broke out of the beach thanks to naval artillery constantly surpressing german positions!

Played ARMA 2 and I'm loving it!! Yes, the voices are lame but I actually found them more hilarious than bad. I'm doing the training and I noticed that my character is black and the way he speaks makes me drop to the ground in laughter. He's like the black Forrest Gump. The graphics caught me by surprise. They are close, and in some areas, better than Crysis. Since this is a simulation, the spatial distance of everything is far more real than Crysis and CoD. It has real-world distances. LOVE IT!
@manciuxl1 Yes, the Arma series are not famous for storytelling. As for A.I., the official patches has reduce many A.I. glitches like the driving controls. But the mods created by fans have really created an overhaul to the A.I. I haven't played MP yet but I noticed that the required prerequisite for getting in is more complicated than I thought. In another note, the Arma forums is a rough crowd. Maybe is me or I've bad luck but half of the members that answered me are fucking rude for no reason

And i don't get why everyone thinks that this latest Medal of Honor is considered so "realistic", its not. Its less fantasy based than CoD, but still - no 4 man squad can take on 300 enemies! And the Taliban was often just standing in an open, never takind cover. Though, it is still more believable tha CoD.

The game looks awesome on Youtube videos but unfortunately it doesn't quite deliver. It's a great concept, but I don't find it fun to play.

@thorbpdk Yeah it can take a lot of work to get it up and running properly and even then it's not guaranteed fun. I think there's a mod that removes motion blur (or you can just disable post-processing from the video options).
I'm kind of a hypocrite here because I just officially bought it through Steam after my original comment and actually had fun playing it (even though it was just mindless running and gunning multiplayer). I recommend trying some mods.

@A9900960 Not exactly correct. Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis was the first, followed by a few OF expansions. There was then a split between Bohemia Interactive and Codemasters. Codemasters kept the rights to the name of the franchise and Bohemia kept the rights to the game engine. Hence why there is "Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising" a relatively unrealistic console-aimed game of the similar name from Codemasters and "Arma 1 and 2", the realistic pc game of a similar engine design.

All these new war FPS's out: COD, MW2, BC2 and I want to wipe them from my pc and reinstall ARMA 2. Best war sim and it still has offline multiplayer, better yet make your own missions, fully customizable...they are way ahead of the game here. Loved flashpoint on my older system back in the day too. =D

The game looks awesome the only drag is that you need a high end computer to enjoy it. They should really slow down on all of this technology, 5-6 years ago 1GB RAM (for example) was more than sufficient, now we have 6-7-8 GB along with Quad cores. I gave up on the PC gaming simply because I don't want to have to play catch up all of the time buying hardware. In another 5 years whatever system that can run this game smoothly will be obsolete, it pisses me off.

Im thinking of abandoning my PS3 to play ARMA2..
Two questions..
1) Is there a pc controller that functions like the ps3 controller?
2) Can I load an OS to my PS3 to load ARMA 2 on it?

@tillman40 1) You can use your PS3 controller as a gamepad, just google it. I'd recommend against playing a game like ARMA with a controller, but to each their own. 2) No. ARMA 2 was specifically made for the PC, and even if you could load an OS, the PS3 wouldn't be able to run it with its hardware.

That is actual gameplay. You can play players versus an army of AI, or player team versus player team verus CPU AI or many other variations. I played about 20 hours worth this weekend alone, it's ridiculously engrossing if you get a good squad together. Highly recommend people play Benny's Warfare mod (just join a server that runs it).
And that free look is enabled by holding or double tapping left alt. Incredibly useful, particularly when sniping and you don't want your body movement to be no

@TheBoomfire1 it depends on mission editor. see the videos from cooperative multiplayer mission over 30-35 players .if you look for some group to play cooperative missions you will discover a new game.

The graphics are perfect although the game has a few unrealistic areas like the parachute and explosion smoke. Still because the game engine is so good, mods can easily fix these issues.

i didn't say the gameplay was arcade-like, but the campaign. many of the missions are unrealistic for a military sim, like the bit when you're sent as a lone sniper. Marines are never sent in by themselves in the middle of nowhere, they work as a team
I enjoy Arma and Ofp especially, but I wish the devs had polished the campaign some more.

@lzoli18B ArmA 2 isn't a military sim, it's a commercial release of VBS2 which is a MilSim.
And i don't rememeber that mission.. unless you mean the first mission where you go in at night and call in strikes on the beach.. apart from that you never play as a Sniper, you play as a Force Recon soldier looking for HVTs and going on patrols to talk to locals and use UAVs and Shit..
Maybe you played a addon campaign? or do you mean Armed assualt?

This game is fun and all, and please, nobody flame me, but I don't really think you can call this a military simulator. Don't get me wrong, this game is pretty realistic and fun, but there's just no way you can get close to real war in a simualtor. There are all kinds of aspects of war that video games can't mimic. Things like psychological and phyiscal stress just can't be copied and put into a video game. Like I said, this game is realistic, but I don't think it should be called a simulator.

@MostEpicMango One of the fact i have noted is that at least in unmoded "realistic simulators" like OPF or Arma series, most of the battles are so short. And if you read about the real battles, you notice how firefights can last a whole day. Another thing is movies - in Saving Private Ryan, the beach landing battle took about 20 minutes. In reality it lasted a whole day too! And allies only broke out of the beach thanks to naval artillery constantly surpressing german positions!

I just installed this game. As soon as I tried to launch it I got a BSOD. I tried again--same thing.--*&^%$#X(*&!! I found this online--

Played ARMA 2 and I'm loving it!! Yes, the voices are lame but I actually found them more hilarious than bad. I'm doing the training and I noticed that my character is black and the way he speaks makes me drop to the ground in laughter. He's like the black Forrest Gump. The graphics caught me by surprise. They are close, and in some areas, better than Crysis. Since this is a simulation, the spatial distance of everything is far more real than Crysis and CoD. It has real-world distances. LOVE IT!

@manciuxl1 Yes, the Arma series are not famous for storytelling. As for A.I., the official patches has reduce many A.I. glitches like the driving controls. But the mods created by fans have really created an overhaul to the A.I. I haven't played MP yet but I noticed that the required prerequisite for getting in is more complicated than I thought. In another note, the Arma forums is a rough crowd. Maybe is me or I've bad luck but half of the members that answered me are fucking rude for no reason

@azn182 Dude a lot of people love sim games. i personally love the whole concept of the military and combat. Now, I personally dont want to join the army because I know that I could die. I would much rather play a game like this, where I can simulate differnent fights and not die if I fail. @codywright99 Or they live on as closest, there are always elements in real war that are not in any simulator. You actually kill hundreds of enemies in CoD missions. And i don't get why everyone thinks that this latest Medal of Honor is considered so "realistic", its not. Its less fantasy based than CoD, but still - no 4 man squad can take on 300 enemies! And the Taliban was often just standing in an open, never takind cover. Though, it is still more believable tha CoD.

@codywright99 I remember reading about Tiger tanks, that in reality, if allies encountered one, they like called in 3-4 times as much shermans as there were Tigers and just massed them and they always expected to loose like half of the tanks. If you look Band of Brothers you see how german tank desteroyer just PWNS all the allied tanks like it was a turkey shot!
