No disrespect to Phish....but listen to the 20 minute Zeppelin version from Earl's Court (it's in 3 parts) and be amazed. Page's guitar sounds like a growl coming from hell and JPJ's piano / keys sound like they're coming from heaven...complete with 10 minutes of improvisation between Jonesy and Jimmy that is mesmerizing. Plus amazing hair and a f@*king Dragon Suit.....GODS!
@dockaiser True, but if I were to guess, this was one of if not the first time these guys tried this song. And that takes guts to just see if it works in front of that many people, regardless of how high they were.
@dockaiser I guess you would rather them to clone LZ's studio version. I would LOVE to hear you and your band do this. This is GREAT! I would bet that Jimmy Page totally agrees.
not good not good at all ,how people can compare them to he dead i llm never know, the dead were an institution, these sound like a pub band ,basically i think its the hype machine again
@lthmptr Phish is mostly compared to the Dead based on the fact that they have toured their asses off for nearly 30 years. The comparisons are more so from the fan following, not so much the music. The Dead was more folk based. Phish is more rock. The Dead definitely had its influence on Phish, which to me is part of musical evolution. I never get why people have a problem with this. The two bands can coexist and for me its only a better world because of it...
@tiedyedlily Im not following you. Whats so true about what lthmptr said? I agree with you: Phish has never tried to replace the Grateful Dead. And musically educated people don't really compare the music of The Dead to Phish. I think they compare the scenes surrounding them. But the intelligent listeners have learned to give credit and respect to both whether or not they personally like them. Thats all Im saying. They are 2 beautiful bands that I just happen to enjoy dearly...
@tiedyedlily Furthermore; Lthmpter claims phish sounds like a 'pub band' which is so far from true... For New Years Eve 2000 Phish put on a music festival down in Florida called Big Cypress. Somewhere in the ball park of 100,000 people attended. Phish played 6 sets. Their last set lasted from midnight to sunrise nonstop. And the most critical fact is that Phish was the ONLY band to play the entire wkend. Maybe 5 bands in all of music history cld pull this off.... 'Pub Band' -Right.
Trey sounds stiff. It's an easy song to have that happen though. Tone has a lot to do with it. If you listen to Zeppelin, you can hear Jimmy's tone is very 'dripping wet' in that song.
@legunncat While I appreciate your opinion cat, I have to say that even Jimmy Page doesn't sound like Jimmy Page when he's playing live...and saying that Trey sounds stiff is like saying that Al Di Meola can groove. IMHO, of all the covers that Phish has played over the years, Trey's tone (and heart) is closest to home on this one.
@johncolasanti He would use some wah pedal to loosen it up a bit if he wanted, suppose. That's what Page does. As for Jimmy, he puts himself through the ringer that's for sure. If you listen to the Knebworth version of Achilles' Last Stand, you wonder why they would ever attempt a live version of that song :)
phish continues to blow me away, this is one of the best shows i have ever hear and i agree they arent trying to sound like led zepplin, if they wanted to they wouldnt have just threw down no quarter like they did
zeppelin cant be touched by anyone, plain and simple. however phish are excellent at what they do as well...theyre not trying to sound like effin zeppelin, theyre trying to be themselves. who the hell doesnt know that? I pity the musically illiterate fools out there judging all these bands. if they got soul and talent, no matter what genre, they rock!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I hardly ever sign in to youtube to comment on vids but ive got to say ...... this is a disgrace to Page , these guys struggle to riff and make up for it with light shows ROFL... Disgrace to No quarter...California acids heads (not that i have anything against them)
Jimmy Herring band does a badass version of "No Quarter" as well. If you're obsessed with covers being 100% true to the original you probably won't enjoy it! So you can just go listen to Tool and be quiet!
If ya knew Phish, or anything about Trey for that matter, You would know that he enjoys and has a lot of respect for TOOL.. Saying that they were the most psychedelic band of the modern age. So everybody that is a Phan on here thats hating on Tool... Maybe you should chiggity check yoself before ya wriggity wreck yoself.
tiedielilly : For starters the organ plays the 1st instrumental verse with staccatos in there. The guitar effects are too clean and "perky". @daddyfatsackish Heh, since before you were probably born, yeah. I knew you wouldn't (I doubt there are many techno AND Phish fans) but it's also likely the most popular genre of music in the world... or at least, dance music in general is... so why don't you like it? :) (see my point?)
@sicone79 lmao, haha yeah its crap. if you don't listen to phish why are you posting on their videos? haha whatever you unintelligent suburban child. go listen to some maroon 5 or some other mainstream "CRAP" and post on their vids then.
Search this term for the original full version ""led zeppelin 1973 live no quarter audiio pabodeha""" It's a whole different piece of music from what Phish played, no offense to Phish whatsoever..
I like Phish, great band, I don't like them doing this tho. It's played too fast, too clean, too loose, flippant maybe. .Spend the time and listen to the original from the 38 year old soundtrack: The original is not only well played, it's slow and moody, almost menacing. It oozes drama. It' a song I wouldn't try to cover. It should be left as it is.
I prefer Tool's cover much more than the original from lad zeppelin... Much better vocals, much better instrumentally, much better everything all around really.
What is everyone talking about in here? I have never written a post in here... This is a great cover and I have NOTHING bad to say about this badn. -.-
I think Gov't Mule does the best cover of this song - if you search 'Gov't Mule No Quarter' on YT there's a few versions, including one featuring John Paul Jones from Bonnaroo '07.
I hope Phish keeps this in the rotation, they can do better than this and it would be interesting to see the evolution of their take on this song.
I thought they did a great job of covering this tune while also making it their own. I personally would rather hear Phish play their original songs, but this was very good indeed!
haha where is tool now? I'm sure they have a really great track record of playing the same type of songs with zero diversity for however long they have been pissing in ears. Tool is really talented, no doubt but try to get them to attract 70,000 plus fans to see them play. why is everyone so hateful in these postings? cant we all just enjoy the music we like and click the mouse when we dont like something? i guess thats not possible for tool fans. but than again look at the name of the band yup
@StyrofoamTuph Its schism. And theres over 40 time signature changes in the song. Thats not even close to their most complex such as Lateralus, Rosetta Stoned, and Third Eye. Phish and Tool are both very talented bands but Maynard vocals, danny's drumming, and their art make them my fav band.
@johanhelmuth So wait, because Tool also covers No Quarter, this isn't Phish covering Led Zeppelin, but Phish covering Tool covering Led Zeppelin?? That makes a lot of sense. "Oathetic" indeed.
@mkdevoThey probably, wait They completely cannot understand your response....So then would a Chuck Berry cover really be like a octet cover being from the 50's? Haha....."Screw this....I though this was a dead cover, who is this Phish band covering the dead....I want the original chuck berry cover lol
???" Haha its all misunderstanding and ignorance. Does the youtube tittle say Tool anywhere?
I am a huge Tool fan, and Phish phan. Both covers have amazing aspects to them. Paige is on the bullseye with this song. The whole band is on it really. Tool's cover is amazing with the bass solo and how the guitars play their own thing over it, but it all works so well!
great cover. i just saw tools cover and i dont get how people could like that better than phish's cover, whatever. i was at this show. smoked so much during this song hahaha
I have nothing against Phish. Really, But I don't think they add anything new to the song. Unlike Tool's live version. But, hey, its all good! (Just my two cents). Good music is good, regardless.
Thanks for uploading this mkdevo, your Phish videos are awesome. It was so cool when the whole place went nuts when we realized they were doing No Quarter, I'll never forget this show
I dare anyone to critize Phish AFTER They have seen them live and have actually experience what all us Phans know........until you have been to a Phish show, you have not seen a rock concert. LOL....I love taking newbies to their phirst....it's always amazing to see their reactions and gasps when they throw down. My dad is next !
@zepfan815 he has seen the best of them - GD, Allmans, Marshall Tucker, etc.......we took him to a Moe. show in 2008 and he was blown away......he sais Phish is on his bucket list; He used to play drums, Fishman will be his new hero!
yuck. absolutely terrible. If Jimmy Page were dead, he'd be rolling in his grave. Bonzo is already rolling in his grave. Terrible vocals, and the jam sucks. Trey Anastasio isn't god.
Amazing performance....These guys are good musicians and have really great musicianship!!!! in a sense of they can re-create sound and have major talent. You have many great posts mkdevo!!
Good song, I think I like the Tool cover of this a bit more, not to take anything away from Phish, they're a great band, I just prefer Tool's cover as it suits my music tastes a little more. Good cover none the less though.
I am the biggest zeppelin fan and would normally be appalled by this. I understand what phish did with this. Its a great subtle cover. They did this song justice. It's a moody song and thats what phish did. they captured the aesthetic of this song very well
please google tyell morton arrested and faceing fellony 2 to 8 years for leaving a box with blow up doll in girls high school bathroom as a prank. This kid needs our help and this is a pretty clear case of a prosecutor being wrong.
The No Quarter by Zep in "The Song Remains the Same" (original issue, 12:30) is probably the best version of No Quarter yet (by Zep as well as others). This was an amazing cover though. No fiddling with Page's distortion and techniques but a very PHISHy guitar solo! THAT is how you cover great songs!
@dold1982 I hear you....but why the hell are you here?? I mean I hate a lot of bands and I NEVER GO TO ONE OF THEIR MUSICAL VIDEOS AND SAY I HATE THEM OR THEY SUCK....WHAT A WASTE OF TIME.....if you hate Phish....well LEAVE....
@mustbeburtreynolds yeah, i have to agree that tool's version blew my mind wide open when i first heard it on salival. same with that version of pushit (i hadnt seen them live til 2006). although this is pretty sick. i saw the setlist and went WHATT! you know what cover i think would be sick for phish to do, no so much bc i like his music, but i could see them doing some serious funkadelic jamming on it, is "fly like a eagle" by steve miller band.
anyone can do triplets with a wah pedal and sound cool. anyone can bend the 5th and anyone can occasionally play chromatically aslong as they land on or around the root within the penatonic scale. this is all trey does and im my opinion he did it terribly and completly butchered this song during his solo.
@thefrost420 no they cant and you cant either...im sure you tried and failed many times though. This is an amazing cover they nailed the feel of the tune you music noob.
You're somewhat right. HOWEVER, this is an absolutely terrible video to use as a reference to Trey's playing which......goes 10X deeper than you state. He didn't find the groove on the improve solo at the end. It happens sometimes. If you want to see Trey play like Trey go watch Slave to the Traffic Light or Fluffhead from the Clifford Ball DVD. Then tell me anyone can play like Trey.
I'm 39; from around 22 years of age onward, somewhere along my travels, I admitted to myself that if there was one group I'd like to go back in time and 'experience' live, it would be Led Zeppelin; this was it--not just because Phish 'nailed' it, but because my brothers and sisters shared in creating the sparkle of love. no recording can do this 'moment' justice. we were one, with no quarter.
Ditto, i used to be a small phish fan, but have seen the light[years ago], these guys are the BEST cover band EVER!!.....and then they have a plethora on there own stuff. BEST Cover band EVER!!.....This was Quality that Led Zepplin would wish for.
Chills everytime I hear this...

Phish wins again

I have nothing against Phish. Really, But I don't think they add anything new to the song. Unlike Tool's live version. But, hey, its all good! (Just my two cents). Good music is good, regardless.

I dare anyone to critize Phish AFTER They have seen them live and have actually experience what all us Phans know........until you have been to a Phish show, you have not seen a rock concert. LOL....I love taking newbies to their phirst....it's always amazing to see their reactions and gasps when they throw down. My dad is next !

yuck. absolutely terrible. If Jimmy Page were dead, he'd be rolling in his grave. Bonzo is already rolling in his grave. Terrible vocals, and the jam sucks. Trey Anastasio isn't god.

Love Phish. Love Tool. They both have a different style of music but still each have something beautiful to add to the musical world.

TOOL'S VERSION IS BETTER TROLLOLOLOLOLOL
No, this is cool, no doubt. It was just basically a spiritual experience the first time I heard Tool's cover.
mustbeburtreynolds 8 months ago
@mustbeburtreynolds led zeppelins version at msg is better and tool sucks lolollol so does phish tho trololol
thefrost420 8 months ago
@mustbeburtreynolds yeah, i have to agree that tool's version blew my mind wide open when i first heard it on salival. same with that version of pushit (i hadnt seen them live til 2006). although this is pretty sick. i saw the setlist and went WHATT! you know what cover i think would be sick for phish to do, no so much bc i like his music, but i could see them doing some serious funkadelic jamming on it, is "fly like a eagle" by steve miller band.
moephan311 8 months ago
anyone can do triplets with a wah pedal and sound cool. anyone can bend the 5th and anyone can occasionally play chromatically aslong as they land on or around the root within the penatonic scale. this is all trey does and im my opinion he did it terribly and completly butchered this song during his solo.
thefrost420 8 months ago
@thefrost420 no they cant and you cant either...im sure you tried and failed many times though. This is an amazing cover they nailed the feel of the tune you music noob.
spacemadness123 7 months ago
@thefrost420
