hmm, seeing the london riots.. i wouldnt be surprised, i mean look what happened after Katrina, though in that case, a great deal of the looting occured from the working class/poor.. London riots, even the well to do, uni students were looting.. and japan after 3.11.11? no need to start that one..
Fallout doesn't work that way. The vast majority of it is heavy enough to settle out in the vicinity of the blast. Cancer rates would go up,but Australia wouldnt be staring at a Cloud O' Doom coming their way months later.
So, was this the "Let's round up every Actor in the biz who was once someone in the 80s and give them one last job?" Oh, and the American accents on the Charlston crew? Nice try, but.....
Where were the Russians, How about France, How about UK. How long does a big load of radiaiton reach Europe from America and then the rest of the radiation reach Russia on Top of Radiation from China. I can say the radiation that reaches Alaska came from China in about 5 days. I can also guess Alaska left America after the 48 were blown up
At least in the original people respected each other right up until the end. You'd think people would just want to live like nothing happened till it was no longer possible to deny the end was near.
the movie carries none of the rustic australian morals or character that the novel portrays. the book, was extremely realistic and the characters very human.
i like the guy who said 23 rads would kill you in 4 or 5 hrs. - he's right , but would everyone be so damm analytical if this sh@t really happened ? I'm a nuke eng. and just watching this made me kind of sick. I pray we never ever live to see such crap !!
I live ten minutes away from one of the biggest petrol-chemical manufacturing areas in North America so I'll be dead before the all clear finishes sounding, but in those 3 minutes I'm going to shoot up a shit load of Morphine, get in my 30 year old Mustang and drive like a motherfucker.
Pray for me that I'm at the top of a hill with a pretty view when it hits :).
Seeing as the greatest contribution to Western Civilization via Australia was Kevin "Bloody" Wilson, Slim Dusty, and Paul Hogan, my attack profiles as a nuclear power may very well have included targetting a good number of Australian cities with some nice cobalt salted multi-megaton MIRV'ed warheads. That woulda shut them and their annoying accent up I would wager!
I disagree with Jen. Both versions are well done. What this version does lack, aside from Gregory Peck, is the poignant music of Waltzing Matilda.. And Rachel is seriously annoying with her mannerisms. Ava much classier; But I enjoy both the movie and the series. And this version is perhaps more relevant to young people today (women with jobs, an unmarried woman who sleeps with a man not considered a slut, Astaire (dire) vs. Brown (hunky). Just sayin'..
By that time the effect of Nuclear Winter will reduce the human population by more than 99% -- try reading the public domain USAF study. It's either end ALL nukes or end all of us! That simple.
Wish you were correct. But even the USAF recognizes (in print, openly) that the combustion products would cut sunlight so severely and for so long, that life would end on Earth.
What physics books suggest that "it [lethal radioactive matterials will ... wash ... 10-15-20 year? Nice, but lethal fantasy.
i never said that people would make it. i said that over "much time" the planet would recover. life finds a way. the planet has froze complety solid once in the past. the planet has also went through this when the asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs. so in ending just because we will prob be all gone dosent mean the planet would be. mans brichies arent big enough yet to destroy the planet litterally.
@lukeslandspeeder Apparently vegetation was sprouting a matter of months after Hiroshima.Scorpions and Cockroaches are less susceptible to radiation. And some life forms exist in underground caves. So, life would go on.
@lewisner - Would that make it ok then? It would still be Armageddon for all Humans and any form of Life that is not Cockroaches or Scorpions, so your words don't mean much regarding 'Life going on'
@lewisner - Yes but Hiroshima and Nagasaki were, in Terms of World Wide affects, the only Cities it happened to. While not trying to downgrade the horror of what happened to them at that time, I think the major difference is f it happened all over the World, then there wouldn't be much chance of Life going on at all.
@soeffingwhat Not life as we know it but SOME form of life. As I said there are lifeforms in underground caverns which never see daylight plus microbes and so on.It may take a million years but life would rebuild itself. In the rationale of OTB only the Northern Hemisphere was Nuked, the rest of the world irradiated.
@lewisner - I think the rationale of OTB is sound in this as such a huge Nuclear Fallout, no matter what side of the World would absolutely spread and the Human Race would become extinct. And the millions of Years means Nothing if we blow ourselves up. Your making it sound as if its "nothing really", prove me wrong if your not.
@soeffingwhat And you sound unusually confrontational. I've no wish to have an argument here so I'll comment once more then no more. What I am saying is that although human life may be extinguished, "Life" in some form would continue even if only as microbes.
@lewisner - Oh I'm not confrontational, but I would be with anyone who thought that it wouldn't matter so much if Human Life didn't matter so much so long as Life continued in some form or other. Microbes Live on other Planets, Planets incapable of sustaining Larger Life, so if this happened Earth would become just like them. "Microbes"?? Means nothing if nothing else can exist on Earth.
@soeffingwhat It wouldn't be just nuclear full out but a nuclear winter that would also spread to the southern hemisphere. The end in Australia wouldn't be as cosy as it is in this drama.
I can't tell either - all I can see is that it's a Penguin softcover. Both Moira and Dwight talk near the end about re-reading the classics, so possibly she's doing the same thing.
why would only one nuculear submarine survive? or no nuke carriers? ..i bet most of our fleet would arrive in austrilia...
