you don't have to use a tripod when you use a flash. the flash helps to bring more dynamic into your shot and also, importantly, helps to freeze the moment and allows you to use faster shutter speed.

use a tripod with only one leg extended (eg. a monopod) for things that move, you can still move around but have good stability

Blah, I don't use a tripod at all and shoot bugs all the time. A tripod is almost impossible for bugs, they move too fast.

if you use a ring flash, you then have the speed and the light, and almost all your pictures are gonna be yousfull
