Cannot undestand why this was not on the original album? ...just a classic song that i never knew existed til the remasterd version in 2001...never saw the Twilight single back in 81..
I am so sad they didn't include this wonderful song on the original album. I was sad, until I found it on the wonderful media they call YOUTUBE! :) Ty McGyverKickYourAss or whatever! lol
@STEFNICOLET "kitchen sink" means to throw everything into the mix - no subtlety but a wonderful effect; think early Phil Spector, "Wall of Sound" etc. BTW your English is v.good - way better than my French!
@MACGYVERKICKYOURASS I meant where SHOULD it have gone in the album. It was included in the 2001 release, but as track 16, which is obviously not where it would have gone had it been included in the original release.
I think it would be at the end and the main character finding out that something had happened that erased his girlfriend from time. But then again, he went to the future not the past which wouldn't change anything. And I have heard that in the end he gets back and talks to his girlfriend who thinks it was a dream.
I always thought the two omitted tracks from "Time", Julie and "The Bouncer", would've fit quite well into the story ark of the album. "The Bouncer" outlines the protagonist's return to his time period, and his worries about how he will be received by his missed love. Perfect, moody reconciliation.
I loved the scenario which "Julie" presents-- having been taken from his own time period to the distant future, the protagonist can exist comfortably in neither.
@ElDoctorJanItor Very astute! Some have commented that on original album this should have replaced "Another Heart Breaks". I don't agree, I think it is a great instrumental interlude on a tremendous album which is painfully underrated. Is the remastered CD available? I'll need to research. I like your analysis. Good work. Thanks to MACGYVERKICKYOURASS for posting this gem of an album. Here's to jeff lynne returning to the scene; hopefully before we leave this plane of existence.
I have many found memories of listening to 'Time' but i can see why this song wasn't on the album. It doesn't fit with the sci-fi futurism of most of the other songs on the album. Still classic ELO though!
Just getting into ELO (well I know the hits but wanna check out the albums) and been reading about this album - got to get it right away. Loving the songs, cheers for all the postings MacGyver.
Aww man! I remember playing this B side of the vinyl single over and over when I was in....ahem....high school. Great song, and thanks for the info about the remastered Time album. It's now added to my ELO collection!
I'm a commercial fisherman in Alaska, and growing up on the boat listening to my dads music. he had so many tapes, but, ELO is really one of those bands i grew up listening to. I did all my growing up at sea and this song always brings me back there. I don't know why this one, but, i love it.
@ArcWolfkin I agree with that. ELO is always giving us special feelings. I had this album in tape back in 1981 when I was serving in a navy destroyer. This album was with me all the way through the Malvinas /Falkland war (I was 18 back then) and it was a source of joy and hope during those tough time and now that I'm 50 I can listen to it and go back to 1981 (in some ways the song "The way life meant to be" says!!).....weird .
You are entirely correct. It's one of the hookiest tunes I've ever heard in my life - and it doesn't appear on any album!! To find ELO is like finding the pot of gold at the end of the musical rainbow!!
I still have the 45 of Twilight, but I played this side a lot more, pretty much wore it out. One of Jeff's best, I also think it should have been on Time. This track is just haunting....
I know also ABBA. They made two brilliant albums Arrival and The Album. But I think Jeff Lynne is much better composer than Ulvaeus and Andersson. This song is great but it was too hard to fit in the original Time album becuase the lyrics are not the sci- fi - type.
Did anyone else notice that the "CLICK HERE FOR STEREO SOUND" link doesn't go anywhere?

In 3:42 Jeff Lynne throws in more hooks, harmonies, dramatic pauses and "kitchen sink" moments than most bands manage across entire albums.
This is POP music, folks; ain't highbrow stuff. And no-one did pop better than Jeff Lynne.
Acid test to this kind of music: you'll find yourself singing along and / or tapping your foot without realising you're doing it!

@captpackrat Actually, it was never on the album. In fact, it was the B-side of the single "Twilight", which was on the album.
