I am told over and over that Surfing isn't a sport. I also live in NJ. I have also been told there are no waves in NJ. Well Surfing is a Sport and So is Bowling and yes I do both =)
my younger cousin who plays football made fun of me because i told him i wanted to be a pro bowler. i told him, "you need to be in shape, man. these pros bowl on average more than 30 games a week," and then later i said, "if you meet guys like sean rash or robert smith, your going to regret making fun of me saying that i want to be a pro." he needs to watch this video
obviously a basketball player is going to be a fish out of water in bowling. If these people tried professional basketball or football, they'd probably get injured or pass out.
I bowled for my high school for 4 years, varsity, and a lot of people would say it's not a sport. While most of the ones that said that didn't even play a sport. Now I'm playing for my college and they didn't even graduate. Hahaha
As maxwarren1 says, 'Sport is defined as: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.' Bowling, you're doing physical activity. It's governed by the USBC and its rules. Even if you're going for a game with the buddies, by your self, or in league play, your competing against others. Buddies go head-to-head trying to win, same in league. By yourself, you compete with yourself to try and beat your last game, or your best game.
@supermonkeyballboy (pt2) What the pros do at the pro level, that's a tremendous amount of effort put in to play well and push through the mental and physical aches and pains to try to get to the top.
What I regularly ask people is, "What do you think bowling is?" They usually respond, "Throwing a ball down a lane and hit some pins. It's not a sport!" Look at chess. It meets two out of three parts of the definition of sport. They're sitting on they're butts though, only moving their arms.
To me, sport is anything related to competition. From chess to MMA. You compete against your enemy to win. At the pro level, EVEYONE has the potential to win physically, but the real battle is in the mind. If your mind isnt straight, you cannot perform. People put too much emphasis on the physical aspect, even though at this level, its all mental.
@yague123 it really is mental. I know that I've lost tournaments because of my mental game. Whenever I get into 6th place for a specific tournament (a youth scratch tournament where there are never that many girls which sucks because I love competition) my mind always tells me just quit you're done for. Bowling is a mental sport, to pick up a split, you have to tell yourself that you can pick it up and that you can make the right adjustments.
@SBbrain900 Yeah. I believe that every single professional has the ability to be winners. That's why they are professionals. They have mastered the game so much, that we as a community acknowledge them to be a such a higher level. But, from there on... you gotta have it right in your head.
Nice lil segment I like it bowling is a sport when it's at there level like pba bowling but with friends with beers isn't a sport but a pick up game of basketball with friends isn't a sport either that's a game but NBA against the best in the whole is a sport it's all about the context and the level ur competing at

Bowling is a sport, but unfortunately the high schools don't consider it as a sport. :/ Maybe the PBA can convince them! :D
