  • Great vid- one of the best out there. You helped me so much man. Thanks

  • This is fantastic. Sorry for repeating what everyone has already said before but this is by far the best afrobeat tutorial I've ever seen. You make the whole thing so easy to grasp! Thank you thank you thank you!

  • @lsamoa Thank you thank you thank you! You.

  • Good Patterns! Great Job, I'm studing! thanks!

  • Is there anyway you can post these without the background music? I have a really tough time trying to isolate the drums in my mind.

  • Muito Muito Bom!

  • Very well put drum instruction video! Thanks! :)

  • This man is HIGH

  • @Nature0one0 LOL. There's projection for you!

  • Fantastic. Thank you!

  • Cool video, the dots really help, just an observation that pattern 8 you have written an open hihat on the end of 4 but you dont actually play it (sounds good both ways) Keep up!

  • hey, great tutorial... whats the beater thing you're using that gives you the metal like , really high tones? and what sticks are using pls? or whats sticks are good for afrobeat?

thanks in advance for your time

  • @LoveBuzz3 Thanks. Any sticks will do - but lighter the better in my opinion. Tony plays really lightly controlling the bounce and rebound superbly.

The metal sound is a cowbell attached to the rim of the bass drum between the toms.

  • @drummercouk Thanks man. I use 5a's at the moment. But Im not entirely sure how the numbers /letters are reflective of weight or size etc ... I hear alot of afrobeat/jazz drummers use 7a's...is this right?

  • This is brilliant. Thank you

  • Absolutely the most pro Afrobeat tutorial on Youtube. I started on Amazon and would have dropped cash on a DVD format. I owe you one!

  • one of the best videos on youtube for drumming!

  • I prefer this version than the original. It's slowed and allows the drums to really groove. The original is way too fast.

  • really helpful, thanks! and i´n a scratch dj ;) but damn, please do a similar one about fills and breaks too? would be much appreciated.

  • AMAZING!!! And i'm a guitar player.....

  • thank you very much for this video. i love afro beat and this video is exactly what i need to help me learn this fantastic style. awesome mate!! thanks again

  • I just think this video is perfect, thank you so much for this. =-D

  • Thank you alot! This is a great tutorial! Awesome Work! Cheers! =)

  • Can't stop watching this... Silky smooooooth.

  • Thanks excellent layout... Wish that someone would do a tutorial like this for traditional American beats

  • @computerhacksaw check out Steve Smith DVD - History of the U.S. Beat. V good for American patterns.

  • just stopping by to listen to my top 10 tutorial in YOUTUBE baby, Fuego fuego !!!

  • THIS IS GREAT!

  • i used to play an afro beat band and this is pretty much it. if youre young or dont know the style well just remember theres a strong emphasis on the back beat after the two. ie the' and of two'...well thats just a starter, theres more to it than that. but notice how each time theres a new groove that he plays to,the 'and' of TWO sounds like one in the western sense of the one....then run from there...cheers

  • Nice bro! You 602 hi hats sound soooo beautiful btw :D

  • This is easily the most professionally made afrobeat tutorial on youtube. After watching this I've got the first few patterns down but holy crap once you add the 3 16ths pattern on the ride it gets way more difficult to pull off. Excellent work.

  • @Savantrovert Thank you! Nice of you to comment. Enjoy the beats! Afrobeat no go die!

  • Very nice video :-) What is the thing sitting on your snare rim? I haven't seen such a thing before. I'm guessing it's for when playing cross-sticking? :-)

  • @Thoemas Thanks! Yeah rim clicks. Yamaha Russ Miller Groove Wedge. Love it.

  • Over 12000 views in a year! Thanks everyone!

  • very good

  • thanks for share this. nice one

  • Hey man, thanks so much for posting this. Excellent job. Afrobeat is so organic, just amazing.

  • This is really useful, thank you! Even as "non-drummers" can use this for programming afro beat drum patterns... ;)

  • awesome dude !!!

  • good job! I'm going to basement to practise:))))

  • Amazing

  • Really cool Tony Allen transcriptions, all my drum bros and music lovers enjoy.

  • Excellent! makes me want to dive behind the kit and dig out my Tony Allen collection...love pattern 13, classic Tony Allen. J

  • This is awesome !!!.The only video i have seem outside Tony Allen that simplifies the pattern.Wow !!! Thanks a million and Keep up the good work ...

Afrobeat No go Die ooo !!!!

  • un Grand Merci Monsieur

  • Nicely done! Thanks for filling the gap in Afrobeat rhythm instruction.

  • @Funkbone Thanks! That is EXACTLY what I am trying to do!

  • You're doing a good job! Let the naysayers try it and post their videos!!

  • @zookat Thank you!

  • terrible execution

  • @McDevy thanks for the encouragement...

  • @drummercouk instructing how to play world drum beats, you'd think would want to be represented with finesse and accuracy.

  • @McDevy - Boy, are you gonna be busy commenting on YouTube with that attitude! lol

  • @McDevy sounds fine, there is musicality in it, that's what really counts

  • Thank You!!! You answered some questions I've had for decades. This is *very* enlightening. Now I need some conga parts. (!) I'll buy the DVD

  • great rhythms

  • #15 : hi-hit is not rightly-scripted on the part... it should be off-tempo, on all "ands"

  • Ohh yeah! Well spotted. I either read it incorrectly or played it incorrectly.

Thanks a lot, I'll change it for the DVD.

Sir, you have, in the best possible way, eagle eyes and bat ears...

  • Very nice!! thanks for posting been practising away on this. love afrobeat and tony allens approach to drumming

  • Thanks so much for this great lesson. I'm a keyboarder and love the classic Afro Beat, helps me a lot on producing some backing tracks. Thanks again!

  • Wow!!

    the grooves sounds so swEEt!!

It,s a miracle ur not dancing behind the drums..

    I know I would!

    KUDOS!

  • Wonderful!!! I'm now itching to play drums right now!!!

  • Cheers for this.... It's great!

  • It's tight. Love it. I'm guessing people aren't concentrating on writing comments, but trying to get the timing ingrained in their musical minds.

  • Love a comment or two if you fancy. Also a rating if you can be bothered...

  • Great video! It's 3am and im itching to play drums. thanks for the inspiration. Drumming will begin when i wake up.
