  • Would you please give the model Of the Siemens motor . You have given me some very good Ideas .

    Thank You,

    Jeff

  • No mater what motor you used I thing you simply did not have enough battery for the trip you need to do,, those 4 coil type batteries are good but not enough,, and if you compare with the efficiency and reliability of a diesel ,, well you will never look at anything electric with good eyes agin. good job you r good with the lectronics what kind of power transistor did u use ,,,, ..ernest,

  • @n4120p I used Powerex 600 amp IGBTs after I made some pretty smoke and fire out of a long (expensive) string of MOSFETs. And yes, i am still pleased with my diesels running on used cooking oil!

  • I now have a tear in my eye, get more battery's !!! sob sob sob.... .. . get more battery's man

  • Nice job, JRStudios! Don't give up the ship! You've done a heck of a great job!

  • You said you scraped this project because you couldn't get back and forth to work. How far is that trip? You might be able to upgrade your battery pack. Battery options are available that are better than the Yellow Tops.

  • 100 mile round trip with 8hr charge while at work.

Running an old car on waste cooking oil is easier and cheaper, been doing it for over three years now. And yes, If I do it again, I will not use sealed batteries.

  • dam! 40 hp? thats like what a 100hp gas engine dude! in a dam bug, im converting my super beetle to electric.

  • It would *almost* stand up on the rear wheels in 1st gear.

  • love the old tama pedal, only a drummer could love it :)

  • Should've gone with a Mapex drum pedal.

  • @TimKGrimes ummmm okay.................

  • that was a joke, Sgt. Pepper :-)

  • Cost...

  • A more efficient, light weight 30hp motor could be had for about 800bucks.

  • where do you live pal? I could finance your next project. Such an able mind should not be wasted! I live in Krakow, PL

  • dont give up man you started somthing!

    its a shame

  • I was told by the guy that bought it from the guy that had the front mount machined to match a VW trans. that it was from a large winch on a ship.

    Rated 40 horsepower.

  • scuzzo is right

  • I gave you all my respect for trying man. How my horse power you think i would need to make a motor run a car efficiently ?

  • made in germany

  • Hats off for trying all the electro yourself!!! I'd love to do that one day!

  • Cool, did you talk with ISITEL and their EMV Electro Magnetic Vehicle?

  • No, I don't know anything about it.

  • Then we Must farm it @ daves farm :),SKY Mountain the Green way !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Put a solar pannle on the roof and let it charge at work!

  • As for increasing the action radius I think you can rest assured he will get absolutely NO action in this car!

  • During this test, I was purposely going for the worst case scenario. It was only a test vehicle to see what the motor could do. If it would have come anywhere close to doing what I wanted, Then and only then would I have spent the time and money to put the motor into a worthy, streamline vehicle. I did, however, at least over-inflate the tires quite a bit!

  • what if you took the smallest gas powered generator you could find , what would you need 30,50 amps? 100amps? and run the small gas generator direct drive to the emotor what kind of millage could you get then ? or have the gen charge the batts when you get low on juice? I've always wanted to build an ecar too :) keep up the good work

  • I know its the point not to be reliant on fossil fuels, but i'm really curious myself. If that's efficient, then a bio-diesel powered small generator would still be a relatively green solution and increase action radius dramatically.

  • That is essentially a prius.

  • The Prius is not available as a diesel (at least not in the USA)

  • theoretically, except a prius doesnt do any hybrid work at 'high' speeds.. anywhere above crawl that is

  • I was told there were no direct connection from the motor to the wheels, that is all electric motor witht he I.C.E. driving the generator.

  • Not as far as i got it. I'm not too impressed by the Prius, they appear to be doing a good-news show more than actually improving anything. A 1.3 litre efficient engine is the real reason for the efficiency increase and the electric engine just compensates for the terrible lack in engine force from stop IMHO

  • IIRC, the VW Superbeetle had a drag coefficient of 0.49. This had to have been very bad for range at speeds over 30 mph. Also, your tires don't look like low rolling resistance at all. Rear wheel skirts, bellypan, removal of unnessessary projections from the body, tapered rear roof spoiler, LRR tires, and other mods could have potentially doubled your range. Due to Peukert's effect, the lower amp draw from this improved efficiency would have increased the AH capacity available for your trip.

  • Listen to the first 15 seconds of the video!

  • nice. shame we don't see it drive

  • Poor dude, Sounds like you know what your doing. Hey, try a paper plate, a sheet of foil, and a shiny penny........... just kidding.

  • I have a jet starter motor/generator dc but that is what I have to work with so I hope it will do the job,it is a ford ranger but I might try to find a Chevy lov for the weight.

I just got my diesel motor, all happy to start it for the first time, and I had to unceased the fuel pump but I got it going now and it burns about a 1 gal per 8 hours or so but I dont have my generator yet

  • I'm building a hybrid that looks like the same setup as yours plus a diesel motor to charge it, do you have any advice that you can give, or anything that you would have done differently

  • That's what I would love to do, make a hybrid! what kind of vehicle? From all the people I have talked to (and my own research and experimenting) go with an AC drive motor for your propulsion motor, and a higher voltage to run the inverter. Thats what all the pros do(including GM, Toyota and Honda Hybrids) and the main thing I wish I had done differently

  • hey, sweet video, i really think that if you were to invest in a more efficient motor, you might have a viable EV.

  • as soon as i saw this , i knew it would be to limited for range with dc. unfortunately a large amperage invertor and the better batteries are so expesive. i instead made a diesel caravan that goes 900 miles on one fillup.

  • In field failures to cut this motor with a help of a fuse is not really a solution. Think of it like this ; your speed will increase and try to reach the maximum value possible. Electro motive force will go higher as the speed goes up. Fuse can stop it in slow speeds but in high speeds it could cause arc which can't be stop by help of fuse ,even in when fuse cut off the circuit.

  • This is an advice that you should really listen to. Since the motor you are using is seperately excited DC motor, it is too dangerous for a car motor. If the excitation coil's cable fail in conduction during a trip ,your car will be crashed and can cause serious injuries. You can make the excitation cable safer (by puting help cable- which shares the excitation coil' current like a parallel cable) or change it with permanent magnet.Good work ; I really liked your car

  • How would this cause a crash? I still have friction brakes, and if the field were to fail (which it has done during experimentation) the worst that would happen is I blow a fuse or burn an IGBT.

  • You should put in NiMH batteries, probably use a newer engine.

  • my next electric endeavor will surely use NiMH or LiPo batteries and an A.C. drive system. I learned a lot from this experiment.

  • Hope your next EV doesn't end up like this one. Good luck on your next EV Endeavor.

  • HA, going through all that I personally think you should have just connected the 8? batteries to the engine raw with just an ON/OFF switch that would have been connected to the gas pedal. I guess that would have been too easy though, LOL.

  • Ah, you had 10 batteries= 120 Volts.

  • I wish I had video of the original "can't wait" idea that used a huge knife switch between the seats! Yep, i did that.

  • AND?! Did it burn rubber til the batteries died or something?

  • Very quick take-off. When i pulled the switch, it would create an arc that would light up the inside of the car quite well. I only had half the batteries installed at that time, I'm sure doing it with full voltage would have destroyed something.
