@jhafner08 yes, I had part of the engine replaced on mine due to the spun bearing diagnosis. I'm now at 75,000 miles (30,000 miles since repair) and the engine is running fine.
I have the same year Jeep with the same amount of miles and mine just started ticking. I thought it was a lifter so I took it apart and the lifters are fine. So it has to be this. I'm going to stick to my Fords next time. Or put replace the 3.8 with a Cummins 4BT
Webcompanion - Do you know why Chrysler assisted you with the repair - were the bearings defective? We had a very similar sound with ours and they said it is damaged rod bearings. We have filed a claim with Chrysler and are waiting to hear. Just hoping for some info - this is our 3rd Jeep and did not have any other problems with the others.
Question on this? Was this sound happening all the time when the engine was running or only when the clutch was pushed to the floor? I have the same noise but mine is only when the clutch is pushed to the floor....I also can't shift gears. Its at Chrylser right now but wante dto see if issue was the same. Thanks in advance!!
My 2007 Jeep Wrangler X had the exact sound and at 68k miles I spun a bearing. The cost for a short block is around 4500 but they use the cylinder heads off your current engine which have to be machined out. Chrysler offered ZERO help.
check out my vid please sounds verry similar its inconsistent ticking.. check your oil viscosity in you manual make sure you are using the recommended... I think that is my prob now so Please ANYONE take a look at my vid
I would say as usual the guys at the shop are clueless, I know this not because some mechanic told me but because i had the same exact sound in me jeep i pulled the pan and its a busted piston skirt. Do you still have good Oil Pressure? If you do its a busted piston skirt, not a spun baring. i have 167,000 miles on my jeep i bet it'll last 40,000 more pulling my boat with that annoying ticking. And Carlos OIL IS OIL you could use salad oil in your Jeep and it wouldn't bitch tell 200K.
I did call Chrysler Customer Assistance Group and they were able to help me out a lot though. I had to pay a $500 goodwill fee but it was nothing compared to what the total repair would have run, which was nearly $4,000. I have to give kudos to Chrysler for helping cover the costs of this repair despite being outside warranty!
Just to finish the story and respond to your comments....
@carlos070965 no I did not use the wrong viscosity oil. After my first oil change inside 3k miles I always used Mobil 1 synthetic and Mobil oil filters. I did all the oil changes myself.
@FogJeep I agree, I used to have a Cherokee and the inline 6 was awesome!
and for the others - - at the time I bought the Jeep it was a 3 year, 36k warranty and I was at 45k miles at this point. So it was not covered.
Chrysler was nuts when they ditched the Jeep 4.0 inline 6 and stuff in that 3.8L V6 excuse for an engine from their minivans (town and country). The 4.0 was a hell of an engine, there are jeeps with 300,000 miles and still on the the original engine.
Got the diagnosis from Chrysler service today and it is a spun bearing. The entire lower part of the engine needs replacement minus the engine block. A very costly repair :-(
