I like Blacks rants but this is unfair, there has been great strides in cancer treatment over the last 50 years. Cancers which were a death sentence 20 years ago are treatable these days. The problem is its not cancer its cancers with many causes and many treatments.
The real deal here is that there are a lot of scientists already trying to find cure for cancer deceases (there are many and they are very different).
The technology that now makes the iphone, (electricity, semiconductors, radio waves, etc) was started in the late 1800s.
We just decoded the human DNA not even 10 years ago!
To be able to fight cancer, we needed this crucial step! Now the heavy work begins... to slowly and painstakingly scan the GIGANTIC molecule 1 bit at a time. it'll be years.
More people make a living off cancer than die from it. Research and treatment is big business and a cure will never be found. Read about Jonas Salk and his cure for Polio. He was outcast by the medical community because he put so many people out of work. He cured the cancer of his generation and was hated for it. What incentive do medical people have to find a cure? It's a lucrative career with plenty of money to be made. The cure is out there, but no one is really looking.

How many millions of people would be effected monetarily? How many thousands of people would be out of work? How many hospitals have entire floors dedicated to cancer patients? If cancer disappeared tomorrow it would directly effect the economy of the country. The money isn't made in research, it's everything else.

It is not that the Dr.s can't cures cancer, its is a group of assholes called FDA in close tie with the pharmaceutical companies controls what the medical students should be learning to become a DR. so that, they don't cure you but continue to spend money on drugs. I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer 8 months ago. My doctor said well we know it is there but too small to do anything about it. I started drinking green tea about 60 oz a day. I now have no cancer. my doctor said that is not the reason why and i should stop drinking so much green tea.
Look it up on internet, for early stages of cancer green tea will kill the cells and if you don't have it in first place the tea will stop it from growing. Oh and BTW I told my doctor to F/O
Lewis, I hate to break it to you, but for the last 60 years there have only been 3 legal treatments for cancer in the US. Radiation, Pills, or surgery. There are thousands of other treatments, many of which have MUCH higher success rates than the 3 we us in the US yet we cannot use them.

I actually just lost some respect for Lewis Black by watching this. People ARE hard at work trying to cure cancer (I know some), but it's not like other diseases where you're protecting a person from outside diseases. Truth is I'm a fan of Lewis, especially his bit about Conservapedia and TubeTV. But this message really pisses me off for some reason. I think a lot of people are taking it too seriously to mean that no cancer is curable because of greedy doctors and fighting researchers. It feels like a slap in the face to those of us who work with cancer patients and do our parts to help them live longer. 3 scientists from 3 different labs just won a major prize (the Lasker Award) for finding a treatment for an incurable cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Instead of dying in 3-5 years, patients can be expected to live a normal lifespan in most cases. This is a great example of what can be done when scientists work together instead of competing with each other, which is what Black is talking about.

I've had cancer but the surgery I had removed it entirely. Though I was lucky.
Haven't they banned stemcell research in the US or something dumb like that? Stemcell research is what can cure cancer, amongst other things. The amount of awesome stuff that can be done with such research is great, but apprently a cellular blob has more worth and life then terminally ill people.
I agree though, there could be more colaboration.

I actually just lost some respect for Lewis Black by watching this. People ARE hard at work trying to cure cancer (I know some), but it's not like other diseases where you're protecting a person from outside diseases. A cure for cancer would be more like protecting a person from themself. I do agree that more can be done, but I'd respect that message more coming from something more altruistic than a thinly veiled iphone commercial.

I disagree. It's the same thing as saying "there is a cure for the cold but they wont let us have it." There is a cure for the cold, it just takes a few days to work.
With cancer, there is a lot of very promising research coming out, and there are a lot of other diseases that they can work on. I mean, there is merit to what you are saying, but I'm fairly sure there is at least one doc. out there that would be willing to spill the beans to help out humanity.

He even went to jail, more than once, for using remedies that weren't approved by the FDA! Who the fuck cares if the FDA says it's OK! If it works, it works. I'm not saying there is a cure for all cancers, but the powers that be sure as hell are NOT! after your best interest!!! This is as obvious as the price of gas!

Nope. Not the point. Like I said before, curing cancer involves killing cells without killing the patient. iPhone design is complex, but not as difficult as working with living things. Progress in one area does not mean there should be more progress in the other. And thanks to the rat research you speak of, we have made loads of progress in cancer treatment that, in some cases, lead to cures.

Truth is I'm a fan of Lewis, especially his bit about Conservapedia and TubeTV. But this message really pisses me off for some reason. I think a lot of people are taking it too seriously to mean that no cancer is curable because of greedy doctors and fighting researchers. It feels like a slap in the face to those of us who work with cancer patients and do our parts to help them live longer. It ain't an easy job, but it's rewarding when people pull through and terrible when they dont.

If only he would think. IPhone design is not a miracle. It's the result of computer science, and it's less complex and profound than controlling the growth of a chaotic metastatic tumor without killing the patient. If your iPhone dies, it's not a tragedy. You get a new one. These are terrible comparisons. Plenty of doctors give a shit. And they help millions. "Cancer" is a vague term, and many of the sub-types are highly treatable with current medicine. But, they can't fix everything-- yet.

Again, are you saying we can't cure ANY cancer? Because that's bullshit. You don't just "CURE" cancer, like you would one day "CURE" HIV. We can treat all kinds of cancers and give people another 20-30 years they would otherwise not have. But some cancers aren't very treatable yet because of the location in the body or the chaos factor of the tumors themselves. And again: iPhone and cancer research. 3 scientists from 3 different labs just won a major prize (the Lasker Award) for finding a treatment for an incurable cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Instead of dying in 3-5 years, patients can be expected to live a normal lifespan in most cases. This is a great example of what can be done when scientists work together instead of competing with each other, which is what Black is talking about.
