I have a basenji as well and you certainly have to establish yourself as the alfa because they believe they are equal or better than you. It took a lot of work to 'tame' the one I got, and now he's just the best dog ever. Hard to train, independent, dominate, and fun all at the same time. I have a black lab female that is his companion and constant playmate. But he is impatient with little kids, so be wary of them around youngsters.
@thetazzbot my basenji Eddie is very good with kids and every adult he's met so far as well. I believe it's a matter of socialization. If you get the dog as a pup and have them around children who are gentle you should be fine. Cute video.
I have 2 basenjis. I do believe you have stolen Cadeau and renamed her Niles. People unfamiliar with the breed aren't able to recognize the different vocalizations which reveal that Niles is not psycho/hostile/terrorized. Basenjis can have what I call tourettes, once they start growing it has to end with a snap (directed to the air) in order to stop the growl. I believe basenjis need to retain their own boundaries in order to remain free. No discipline for boundary games.
holy shit that was so funny! i have a basenji too and your dog Niles reminds me of my girl. she does the same snarl its so funny! :) i can tell you love your dogs and only a true basenji owner would understand this video. i love it!
Bahaha! We had a little red dachshund that would do this, too, but ONLY with my Dad. I gotta admit, part of me was hoping for the dog to bite your face off, LOL.
I find it hard to fathom that your ex-girlfriend let you anywhere near Niles when he's so obviously anxious and uncomfortable with you. Even if this is a "game", it's one that is very likely to result in Niles being put down - if he "plays" with people who don't understand who complain to the authorities he will be put down. It looks to me that this is a dog who's been trained to be vicious... and that's exactly how it will look to them. :-( I hope you don't have any dogs of your own.
Depends entirely on their personality. Ours was well treated and she loved to nibble or play bite. They aren't domesticated animals, they are very pack oriented and trained hunters. Mine would always chase after me when I walked around the house, nipping at my ankles as if to try to bring me down instinctively. But when I wasn't in the mood she was calm, and would just sit in my lap, etc.
I could also get her all wound up like that too, they aren't upset, it's just a Basenji
My basenji is like this, too! If you wake him up from a nap he growls and makes fake snaps at you. He's getting a little surlier in his old age! We have a unique relationship as well. We both love to push one another's buttons. They're some of the greatest dogs in the world, eh?
My Basenji gets nasty when you try to wake her up in the morning!! You can take food and bones away from her no probs but don't dear interrupt her beauty sleep!
I dont why basenjis do that XD I have one too and he does that same thing! only not as much noise..has he ever seriously bit you? Mine just snaps at my hand and puts his mouth on the top of my hand but never bites me..such a strange breed -.-
Ahhh! that's what wolves do to exhibit dominance in the wild- the alpha places his chin over the lesser wolf's snout. haha. uhh, maybe your dog has a bit of a dominance-behavioral issue =x (though that doesnt mean it makes him a less than sweet dog)
@chinchillachic18 Mine does that too. He snaps and puts his mouth on my hand but never really bites. He makes that nasty growling sound, too. He gets so mad if you try to move him while he's napping!
lmfao Niles is funny....he hates being petted I guess lmao. Or maybe it was the camera haha. My Basenji Anubis (after the Egyptian god of Afterlife) is so lovable. He always howels and gets excited when i come home.
You should see my grandmas cat named joy lol Joys an evil black cat but at the same times a lil mommas girl. she growls ferociously at us well not really a constant growl and an occasional hiss but when grandma leaves house joy goes to the window and starts whining for her to come back. lol one time we went to the movies joy messed up the kitchen by knocking over some glasses
He love me, and loves the "game." Believe it or not, it really is just a game to him. Obviously I play it up on camera, but as soon as I walk away or move over 4 feet, he comes right over, assumes the position, and we do it again. If I move over again, he comes over again. Pretty cool really. He won't do it for anyone else.
I have a Basenji and I totally do this with him as well! They're real playful, teasing dogs and fun to kind of mess around with. If you get on the nerves of mine, he does similar things, but it's all in good, teasing fun and he knows it. Basenjis are a lot of fun to provoke -- they're hilarious.
Sick bastards like this jerk cause well meaning dogs to become needlessly aggressive, have to be sent to shelters and euthanized. I hope he realizes his cheap, witless humor could result in the pointless death of a beautiful basneji.
Hi Gregg, I appreciate your good words. Niles is actually having an okay go of it here. He is in no way ill-natured, we just have this little game. Lulu is not at all interested. I can turn Niles off in a heartbeat and it is as friendly to me and other people/dogs as he can be. I know it looks great for TV, but it is all a big show. You would like him. I do not do this with other dogs, I am not cruel. Niles is actually a friendly hound!--Ivan
Ivan - I apologize for calling you a jerk. I just had to deal with a foster basenji being put down because of his aggressive behavior, and I lashed out at you unduly. Although I know you probably love Niles, I encourage you not to continue this kind of interaction. When you invade a basenji's space and reward him by petting him, you reinforce behavior that could eventually put him and you at risk. I hope you consider making sure that sweet Niles is never put in a situation of risk.
My dog Lucy does has the same sort of behavior, it is sort of a game for her. I find this video hilarious, Lucy and Niles have almost identical markings, and she sounds exactly the same except she doesn't do the howl, just the growling. Just like with Niles we can turn her off in a heartbeat, it is all just show. She actually wags her tail when she does this. Very funny!!
@GregginSF Wow, really? Go hug a tree, freak. He's just playing. I have a basenji and he does this exact same thing. It's not mean, it's just play. Troll somewhere else next time.
I do think that that basneji should be disciplined. That is unacceptable. My basenji is a sweet heart and would NEVER do that. She knows better and she knows that I am the alpha in the pack. Niles does not know that, you need to let him know that you are the boss, not him. Good luck on his training.
Hysterical...I'm watching this vid, and my Saint Bernard, Zoey, is sleeping next to me. She hears Niles &/or Lulu, wakes up, cocks her head...hobbles over to the computer screen (she's got bad hips)...and goes berzerk at the screen! Funny vid. Thanks for the sub, btw.
I love this video! Niles and his sister kind of remind of my Basenji, Cinnamon. She goes insane when she meets new people. Basenjis hate new people in their territory. They can get really vicious. On the bright side, they're total cuties! :)
mine brings out the anger in evey dog it meets. one time we were walking and they started sniffing butts and the other dog whipped around and grabbed cinnamon by the neck. lol she thinks she's top dog meanwhile shes like fighting a black lab
My basenji Zorro-Baba, has the same "hunter attitude" when I give him too mnay kisses, or when his food is being threaten by some "predators", his fur-family.cool video, great job!
This an interesting video. I have a male Basenji, Tut (6 years old) and he will make noises and gestures like Niles only with select other dogs. I try to take Tut out hunting (off leash) everyday so he can drain his energy-that way he stays out of trouble, except when he finds a dead animal to roll all over.
purebred basenjis can't be trained because they haven't been bred to be subservient or respectful of their honours they are loyal and such but not respectful I have owned a purebred one for 15 years and he has always been like that really
As a Basenji owner myself I suppose I should be distressed by Niles clear camera anxiety but with shame I admit I find his bizare growls & howls amusing...his tux is pretty cute too!
I am the bearded guy and yes, Niles needs an exorcism, a psychologist, and a dentist. The bearded guy and the cameraman are the same, I am they! My ex-girlfriend owns them. Niles and I have a love love relationship, but he is a crazy one if I look at him just right.
One another thing:Basenjis are really wonderful dogs,BUT DO NOT BUY ONE JUST BECAUSE THEY DO NOT BARK!They are-and will always be-wild dogs, amd they are not for everybody...
and whoever said that they do bark... well, yeah. they cannot bark like a doberman or something. they can make one or two "woofs" but that is it. their vocal cords arent made the same as other dogs. if yours can actually bark its not pure-bred.
it's not purebred if it is able to bark like a doberman or such only a purebred is not able to bark I've owned a purebred for 15 years and he hasn't once barked he has tried to imitate a bark though since there is alot of dogs that bark at night
This video brought back so many memories of the 2 basenjis I grew up with (early 60's). The oldest one used to grow and fuss just like Niles(?), your red and white. Very fun!
My basenji's do the same thing some times. The male you can pet and move him if you have to, but the females if you move she will snap at you. The male growls at the female if she gets too close to him while he is eating foor, or if they have dogs treats or bones.
he remnds me of my Spanky you can't get near him when he is my my husband !! He acts just like that but then he will love you. That is just the nature you have to go will it. Love them!
Falsly stated at beginning of video, poor bahavior, and you shouldnt give your dog any affection when agressive, none the less let him bite you multiple times!
UN-educated! you should be ashamed about allowing your dog to bite you and be territorial. He IS wild because you let him act that way, NO dog is born wild. and this dog was not either, you made him wild and aggressive.
It is a basenji and he just acts like one. Basenji are smart and have strong character. They dont consider themselves inferior to us. They are like cats, except better and funnier.
They arent "yes master" type of dogs. Just because a dog isnt submissive, doesnt mean that he is "broken". That's his character and people who have basenjis, love them for that reason.
Basenji psychology is complex and different from other breeds. Only if you had a basenji you could understand this video.
Niles takes his tea from lead crystal and in a Tux, and he is primitive. So, yes I bet your dog IS primitive, and no, I am not a bleeding liar. (just a regular liar.)
lol... Niles is obviously asserting his maleness or sees you as competition!... that's funny I have the opposite issue in our home, it's our bitch who rules the pack. Most often I think that is the Basenji way! Although Ginger is completely docile to her humans its when she has to compete for attention, or her chair, or thinks she needs to keep another dog in line as she is the queen! Hopefully Niles will learn to get over his issues!.. Basenjis are not unlike their human 'owners' :-))
Niles is classic! One of the best videos I've seen. I have 2 basenjis and I believe you really captured the best of the breed! Good job fierce basenji hunter!
oh come on bionic...go on with your bad dogwhisperer self, he knows his dog. I have one like that. It's all performance for the voice tone. That dog is perfectly happy.
dankyd53 ~ This is an independent breed. That's why you have to be interviewed to be allowed to own a Basenji! Because to "beat the crap out of my dog if he acted that way" would make him unmanagable and much worse than you see.
They just want you to leave them alone when they do that. If you beat the dog, you'd have to give him to Basenji Rescue and someone with patience and understanding of the breed would have to undo the damage caused by your abusing the Basenji.
Sure, I remember those interviews. Oh, wait no. I own a basenji, and thats not true. I am very patient and loving with my dog, but I would never let him act like that. Do I break out the switch? No. But I don't let him do whatever he pleases. Look up my basenji videos and look at my unmanagable beast.
you realise it's a purebred basenji right? purebred basenji's act like that naturally they haven't been bred to be subservient or slaves to you like other dogs I've owned a purebred one for 15 years and I know for a fact they aren't bred to follow your every order they are bred to be individual
this had me laughing for minutes, i love that little basenji who was screaming. I have a basenji who is turning 1 year old soon ... he's quiet exept for a few yodels a day... how old is tht one in the video?
I am laughing my head off here. I KNOW basenjis can be like that, but you are REWARDING him for aggressive behaviour, the more he growls, the more you pat him..lol
Niles is a happy but crazy dog. He seems more mad than he is. If I stop and move away, he comes over and starts at it again. I really am not abusing him, promise!
I had a shelty that acted just like that, especially when having a tugging contest with one of her toys. When I would stop, she would be right back at it again, dropping and bouncing her toy around my feet. Then the fun would start all over again! She loved it!

One another thing:Basenjis are really wonderful dogs,BUT DO NOT BUY ONE JUST BECAUSE THEY DO NOT BARK!They are-and will always be-wild dogs, amd they are not for everybody...

I love the music at this tape! From where have you downloaded it?
Hans021220 4 years ago
this is such a bad representative of the breed.
and whoever said that they do bark... well, yeah. they cannot bark like a doberman or something. they can make one or two "woofs" but that is it. their vocal cords arent made the same as other dogs. if yours can actually bark its not pure-bred.
senjigrl 4 years ago
i got a basenji!!!! ...My ass that they dont bark.. for some reason my does
zzkeltonzz 4 years ago
it's not purebred if it is able to bark like a doberman or such only a purebred is not able to bark I've owned a purebred for 15 years and he hasn't once barked he has tried to imitate a bark though since there is alot of dogs that bark at night
drinkyourtea 3 years ago
I had a purebred too he almost barked twice over the course of some 16 years lol.

OMG, they are exactly like my 2 Basenjis.. if you have a chance, check the videos under Basenji, Chanel and Valentino!
Your dogs are great! Congratulations!

This video brought back so many memories of the 2 basenjis I grew up with (early 60's). The oldest one used to grow and fuss just like Niles(?), your red and white. Very fun!

Codykins1989 4 years ago
My basenji's do the same thing some times. The male you can pet and move him if you have to, but the females if you move she will snap at you. The male growls at the female if she gets too close to him while he is eating foor, or if they have dogs treats or bones.
asimpson1 4 years ago
he remnds me of my Spanky you can't get near him when he is my my husband !! He acts just like that but then he will love you. That is just the nature you have to go will it. Love them!
mollybrown89 4 years ago
Falsly stated at beginning of video, poor bahavior, and you shouldnt give your dog any affection when agressive, none the less let him bite you multiple times!
ItsaBushThang 4 years ago
UN-educated! you should be ashamed about allowing your dog to bite you and be territorial. He IS wild because you let him act that way, NO dog is born wild. and this dog was not either, you made him wild and aggressive.
ItsaBushThang 4 years ago
It is a basenji and he just acts like one. Basenji are smart and have strong character. They dont consider themselves inferior to us. They are like cats, except better and funnier.
They arent "yes master" type of dogs. Just because a dog isnt submissive, doesnt mean that he is "broken". That's his character and people who have basenjis, love them for that reason.
Basenji psychology is complex and different from other breeds. Only if you had a basenji you could understand this video.

You Bleeding liar! My dog is NOT primitive!
CaptainSora24 4 years ago

Basenjis are not unlike their human 'owners' :-))

oh come on bionic...go on with your bad dogwhisperer self, he knows his dog. I have one like that. It's all performance for the voice tone. That dog is perfectly happy.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The dog is happy? I would beat the crap out of my dog if he acted that way. That dog's got no respect. I hope this bearded fella never has kids.
dankyd53 4 years ago
dankyd53 ~ This is an independent breed.
BaileyBasenji 3 years ago
Sure, I remember those interviews. Oh, wait no. I own a basenji, and thats not true. I am very patient and loving with my dog, but I would never let him act like that. Do I break out the switch? No. But I don't let him do whatever he pleases. Look up my basenji videos and look at my unmanagable beast.
dankyd53 3 years ago
you realise it's a purebred basenji right? purebred basenji's act like that naturally they haven't been bred to be subservient or slaves to you like other dogs I've owned a purebred one for 15 years and I know for a fact they aren't bred to follow your every order they are bred to be individual
drinkyourtea 3 years ago
way to push your dog to a negative response. you have to give him credit though for telling you he's uncomfortable. do you listen? no.
bionicchronicm 5 years ago
this had me laughing for minutes, i love that little basenji who was screaming. I have a basenji who is turning 1 year old soon ... he's quiet exept for a few yodels a day... how old is tht one in the video?
oonarox 5 years ago
What a vocal basenji! Sure does like to be the alpha dog. Funny clip, and a little scary, too.

Dealing with you? No wonder that dog was switched on! :-) I kid, I joke! LOVE IT! Hysterical! Can ya get a big ole Ridgeback that worked up?!
chokeu2 5 years ago
Yeah, I would be too scared. Niles scares me and I know he will not bite. His sister would send me to hospital but she is sane.

My mother is going to be in hysterics when I show her your video...
bungeygirl 5 years ago
We grew up with them...my father loved the breed I spent many years catering to the needs of the damn things..lol
bungeygirl 5 years ago 6
I am laughing my head off here. I KNOW basenjis can be like that, but you are REWARDING him for aggressive behaviour, the more he growls, the more you pat him..lol
bungeygirl 5 years ago
He is happy and only does that for me and when I "key him up" but it is nice and he truly loves the interaction.
MachizTV 5 years ago
ROTFL! WTF have you done to that poor dog? My little guy doesn't even know how to growl!
jontew 5 years ago
lol, you had my girlfriend and me laughing our asses off! especially at the end with the *bite* *bite* *bite* *happy bow-tie* segment!

Of all the Basenji Videos on YouTube, I like this one the best by far, but as far as that dog, you can keep him!
RichMachiz 5 years ago
That was hilarious! Love that "angry cammel" voice!
alicechaos 5 years ago
Niles is a happy but crazy dog. He seems more mad than he is. If I stop and move away, he comes over and starts at it again. I really am not abusing him, promise!
MachizTV 5 years ago
I had a shelty that acted just like that, especially when having a tugging contest with one of her toys. When I would stop, she would be right back at it again, dropping and bouncing her toy around my feet. Then the fun would start all over again! She loved it!
