This is by far the most creative music video in my opinion and I remember when this video premiered and it was rumored that it took over a year to get it completed. And..... give it up Lady GaGa...... because you'll NEVER COMPARE to Grace Jones!!!!
@introducing68 You are absolutely spot on. My step grandmother is from Trinidad and reminds me of Grace Jones (I'm English). She travelled all round the world with my Grandad in their retirement and this song and video, especially the intro, always makes me think of them taking off from Heathrow airport and flying over their house in Old Windsor, England in a British Airways Boeing 747 jumbo jet!
She's ridiculously beautiful. And another example of what a big phoney Lady Gaga is. Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Madonna, Cher, Wendy O'Williams, Grace Jones et al... all these iconic guys and gals are where Lady Blah Blah gets her 'originality' from.
Grace Jones and this video used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid, lmbo! but I loved watching it bcuz I loved the music and found the contents of the video interesting. Never seen anything like it.
GaGa's place is to remind us how short peoples memories are and you don't need to actually come up with anything new to be considered unique. No one will even think to look back to see where you ripped it off from.

In that way, Gaga is a perfect mirror for this generation, reconstituting moments of originality and re-processing them through a narcissistic prism using the language of pornography - pretty much what every other teenage girl (and, increasingly, boy) does with pictures of herself on Facebook.
I could go on about this all day and this isn't really the place is it? Maybe I should start my own blog...
I wouldn't mind Lady Gaga copying Grace Jones or Madonna or whoever, if she just did it with a modicum of wit or intelligence. The reason Gaga is shit is not because she copies; it's because she trots out the same tired quasi-porno imagery upon which the image makers for female singers have been over-reliant for years and years, then embellishes it with a frisson of "weirdness" borrowed from the likes of Grace or Bjork....

Truly a masterpiece! I absolutely love it's originality. I had this song playing in a recent party I hosted. Everyone loved it. By the way, 3:25 is my favorite part. I just feel like grabbing a sliver platter with h'orderves and spin around like that ughhh. I wish I was a teen in the 80's.
I'm tired of people trashing gaga. Why do we have to trash one artist to bring up another? They are both impressive in their own ways, and I love Grace. I liked her before I was really hip to Gaga, but guess what? It's possible to appreciate both! I really love this song, so full of joy. Let's just get over it, it's not that deep. If anyone is swagger jacking, it's Rihanna.
@DaxShaw You know that's a GREAT point, I never realized it before, but "Rated R" in its image, at any rate, takes a lot from Grace, and its swagger as well, not so much the music style, but the themes. Interesting... lol To me the only thing Gaga may intentionally take from Grace is some of her style ideas and that's it, her music is more like early Madonna and Ace of Base then any of Grace's records.
I came of age in this era and largely dismiss the 80s' pop culture as silly and vacuous - but I love how Grace Jones owned and celebrated her strength and beauty. I am tall, strong, muscular, flat-chested - and beautiful, but it took me a loooooooooong time to appreciate it. Let's hear it for Grace.
@marybarone98 i love how u said that, so true, shes beautiful in her own way and different,. you dont have to look like "the standard " to be beautiful
MiggyVee..u said it all in a Rant n Massive Respect(secret handshake) for tha comment..postin this tune on facebook to entertain/educate tha masses on wot u av on ur I-pod(or ovva mp3..i dont advertise lmao)..thanx ;-)
i was dancing to this at 17 in an enigmatic club called the starck club in dallas tx as i watched her perform the song. she is force like no other. amazing. i will never forget it. i simply cannot get enough of this video.
Best video ever. No doubt about it. Where the talent of this caliber today? I mean who is gonna watch one of today's videos 25 years from now? There's several versions of this on YouTube, totaling a million hits!!! And who can forget "Boomerang's" Strange?
@maureencora1 Interesting you say that because this song was released in 1985 when "A View to a Kill" came out and Grace Jones was the villain in it. :)
you're right there! Nowadays everybody's just sampling everybody & everything, no new ideas, no risks. It's like a bloody interbreeding, an incest - well we all know the outcome ...
Slow people are not going to get all of the symbolism in this video. People who don't want to put themselves in another place for a moment-and we're talking 25 years ago. The black girl putting her head in a cannon and comes out looking like Marilyn Monroe? Check the images at the end of the video. Great job Jean-Paul Goude, Trevor Horn and Miss Grace Jones.
@Auntkekebaby You're so right. The whole'83 to '85 period is still derided and certainly the DayGlo visuals have dated, but Grace Jones, Frankie and a host of others had a totally unique take on the iconography of previous decades: mixing adulation with a new understanding of the exploitation involved. It seems that nowadays icons are, like the emperor's new clothes, iconic before history has had chance to have a say. Lady Ga Ga anyone?
@Auntkekebaby It's a great tune and a fun video, but you're reading far too much into it. Although original footage was shot for this, it was discarded in favour of a compilation of clips from TV ads for brands including Citroen (with Grace driving) and Orangina. Greatest video of all time? Personally I don't think it's even Grace's best.
@wilkobangs Yes - Ian McShane does the voiceover.
@seedy69 Yeah...OK A collage can tell a story. Also, I didn't say in was the greatist video of all time. Read the comment again. My opinion hasn't changed. Nice to here from you.
Totally agree, The video, the images, the music, the voice EVERYTHING was better in the past in the world of music and i'm 25 years old. This is the very best song of Grace in my opinion, i followed her since she acted in Conan, then with her disco sound ("I need a man", etc) and now that i hear her 80's music i'm really amazed how talented, creative and versatil was this woman. i dont know why she never became as famous as others SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO :D
Ms Jones is a goddess, but i just thought...there is nothing wrong with gals like Gaga doing her thang....let her do her shit. nothing wrong there. personaly gaga is so 80ties oriented it does not surprise Me for s..t. or anybody old school out there......
the original lady gaga.ladies and gentlemen grace did it way before lady no talent ever thought about it.she needs to bow down and praise miss grace for the influence to be her
Will people stop Fucking Bringing up Lady Gaga!!!! Im 22 and i hate the generation im in its so Fucking Ridiculous. Everyone just Copys everyone and People today are such damn Puppets. When will i finally See some Originality like this ever again! Where is the Elvis of Today The Beatles and the Who that changed a Generation where are the Michael Jackson's that Dominate and shatter all musical Records. When will we see the next big thing that no one has ever seen before!
@impulsewithMiggyVee I need more friends like you my age because I'm 21 and you took the words right out of my mouth about how I feel about my generation lol
YOU have seen through the smokescreen of the 'pop lite' clture that surrounds you. YOU are already decades ahead in understanding than 99% of your age group. So it is down to YOU to make the difference. USE the anger, the frustration, the passion, and channel all that energy in to YOUR OWN CREATIVE MUSIC and FASHION statement.
The world will always step aside to let the bold push through. SO BE BOLD, BE ORIGINAL and STAMP YOUR MARK ON THE WORLD! Good luck ...
@ACinDorset Wow thanks buddy that really made my day. Thats why im in Film school at the Nyfa. haha As a Child i only grew up to oldies music and Old films so non of the Fads and Mainstream really struck me. Kinda immune to it hahah
@impulsewithMiggyVee Hey good luck with film school- New York is a fantastic place for inspiration. Studio 54, The Loft & CBGB all gave birth to disco, punk & hip-hop at about the same time... its high time for New York to rise like a phoenix and take the lead in music, film & fashion once again.... dig deep, find truth and beauty, and you cant go wrong. All the best. (ps- if you like MJ- look at Bob Fosse, Snake in the Grass) ... Cheers

If anyone is swagger jacking, it's Rihanna.
musicdragon75 1 year ago
@musicdragon75 preach on,Gaga copies certain things from Grace but Rihanna copies her head to toe
DaxShaw 1 year ago
@DaxShaw You know that's a GREAT point, I never realized it before, but "Rated R" in its image, at any rate, takes a lot from Grace, and its swagger as well, not so much the music style, but the themes. Interesting... lol To me the only thing Gaga may intentionally take from Grace is some of her style ideas and that's it, her music is more like early Madonna and Ace of Base then any of Grace's records.
thewordthatpierces 1 year ago
@thewordthatpierces Very true, Rihanna's copied Grace overall while Gaga has just copied some of her style but never her music.

@maureencora1 Yes I totally agree.

you're right there!

Lady Ga Ga anyone?
tomgerardbaker 11 months ago

One word comes to mind, after watching this video for the first time: LOLWUT?!
EggoMyLion 1 year ago
Totally agree, The video, the images, the music, the voice EVERYTHING was better in the past in the world of music and i'm 25 years old. This is the very best song of Grace in my opinion, i followed her since she acted in Conan, then with her disco sound ("I need a man", etc) and now that i hear her 80's music i'm really amazed how talented, creative and versatil was this woman. i dont know why she never became as famous as others SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO :D

Brilliant!!! Just about says everything you need to know about the life of a (dark) African woman..and don't let her be famous. A childhood favorite.

Cheers
