I know people say why do people go in when they can't swim and ignore the signs but if you don't live near the sea you don't grow up understanding to look out for the warning signs which on a massive beach can be easy to miss. People also assume that the beach slopes gentally down into the sea and are unaware of currents and sandbanks. So they go in for a bit of a paddle where they can stand fall of the edge of the sandbank and get dragged out by the currents.

Not "rifts" but "rips", it's parts in the water with large under-swell and so can take you out really fast and are impossible to swim against. You can usually tell where they are from the waves and any churned up sand. If you get caught in a strong rip you're the best thing is to just let it carry you, and then once it stop to swim back to shore around it, because if you try to swim against it you will probably end up in strife.

why, they can go to the beach, they should just stay on the water's edge. Especially in places like Bondi they should only go into the water up to their knees so they won't get whiped by a current or wave. But some just can't be carefull. Indeed you don't go swimming if you can't.
