However the Oasis single spent ages on the charts (most of 1996 in actual fact) whereas Mike Flowers had to settle for 7 weeks.... plus two as a re-entry in April '96....

Here is the real story; it was all fun on BBC radio and a joke...

The band became famous in the UK in 1995 when they released a cover version of Oasis' hit song "Wonderwall". Flowers had been recruited by BBC Radio 1 DJ Kevin Greening to cover the 'Hits of 95' for Greening's Saturday show; "Wonderwall" was his first week's project. Chris Evans heard the song and made it 'single of the week' on his Radio 1 breakfast show, telling listeners that this was the original version (read on Wikipedia).

When this first came out in the UK it was a great gag. UK radio stations even pretended this was the "discovered original version" of the song. Noel thought this was hilarious, especially when someone at his record company, after hearing Flowers version, asked him if he had really written Wonderwall.
