I can get these tubs for $2-$3 each think about it you stack them together use zip ties and you have a portable boat that takes very little space. Orientate the tubs in other direction and you have something. I would do side by side use some PVC shaped with a line of 2 liters to make a out rigger to provide stabilization.
This video shows perfectly how people hate to see other people succeed. The smartass narrator was hoping so bad that they'd "epically fail", then after they didn't he (or she?) made one comment after another as to why the two adventurers were "so ghetto".
Hey that's pretty cool. Just a floater, dissemble and haul it in a very small space. Cool, using your head! Just be sure and get some top quality tubs.....
@seravios That blue thing I'm wearing *is* a life jacket :) I'm a big fan of safety equipment, especially when trying stuff that hasn't been tested before.
Jeez, her voice pierces the ear drum with a sonic resonance, known only to dolphins and whales. The boat is actually cool and she ruins the video. I hate loud women!
@loansharky That's what I wanted to do, originally, but there were a couple of drawbacks. First, I couldn't find a source for $10 plastic drums, and, second, drums can't be stacked inside each other. All the plastic tubs nest together, so the whole boat breaks down into a really small space - basically the size of one tub, one 2x4, and a plastic bag of bolts. I think 8 plastic drums would fill up the whole car...
COOL :0) My brothers first boat was an old freezer with the door removed. I on the other hand found an old aluminum bathtub with a major hole in it.My friend and our vessel unfortunately sprang a leak in the middle of a pond when the patch gave way.
We did solute two cute girls as we sunk slowly.
This led to canoes,aluminum boats ,a houseboat,sailing canoes and now a strong wish to live on the water at retirement.

thnx dude im bying 5 tubs fro home depot and makin 1 thnx for the idea dude i was lokin on the internet at these cause me and my friend have to make a boat andi came across this thnx
first of all, i dont see any registration numbers for that boat boys. before you go out next time you need to make sure you follow all your state laws on flotation, including doing a sink test. and please wear your life jackets. you could seriously die in that (3ft?) of water! i also did not see a life boat of any kind, or an emergency signal. had you boys gone any farther out you would need to invest in some kind of Comm unit and a homing beacon. signal flares might not be a bad idea either!
@darkesthour117 Yes, each tub technically adds 100 pounds of support (displacement). There's some overhead in the weight of the tubs themselves and of the wood needed to hold them in place. If you used slightly bigger tubs, say 75 liter instead of 55 liter, you'd get 320 extra pounds of support. With larger tubs, though, you may need to spray some structural foam or put some other kind of bracing inside them so they don't collapse.
Not bad for $50 and one day's work. It probably would have been easier to paddle if you had lined the tubs up facing forward instead of sideways (if that makes any sense). But it floats and is relatively stable, which is better than a lot of DIY boating projects!

how exactly did they attach the bins to the frame? glue maybe?
hoodstarx1 1 year ago
@hoodstarx1
I used machine screws. There are two on the outer edge, and one on the inner edge to keep the tub from twisting.
The whole thing assembles (with a wrench and socket set) in about 30 minutes on the beach :)
