Question: I have both carpal and cubital tunnel both hands and elbows. What is best way to do exercises? Do the carpal stretches and then the cubital stretches then the glove exercise for carpal then the ones for cubital? Since the palm up full extension is recommended for both, would this be best way or to do the carpal stretches then glove and then cubital stretches and then glove?
Do the palm-up stretch for Carpal Tunnel and then the elbow stretch for Cubital Tunnel. Follow the Carpal Tunnel program for 4-weeks as this should take care of the symptoms enough to allow you to replace it with the Cubital Tunnel program starting at weeks 2-3. It is the wrist rotation involved in supination that we want to look out for. Also, if your elbow hurts to perform the Palm-Up elbow moving, perform the Palm-Up Isolated until you can move the elbow without pain.
I am so impressed with all of the easy to follow info you have posted for the Flextend.
Do you have anything for a rotator cuff injury? In addition to my bi-lateral CTS, I have a full thickness supraspinatus tear. I've done some physical therapy but still have a lot of pain.
There is an attachment device called the AC-Kit that attaches to FLEXTEND to perform rotator cuff and upper body exercises. It also has a bunch of easy-to-follow exercise programs for specific disorders that are included in the manual. I hope your CTS is improving!
@URehab My CTS is improving, but slowly. I started using the arm strap which I find much easier, but since my CTS is in both hands, I find it is a pain (no pun intended!) to keep switching the arm strap on the Flextend. How can I order a second arm band so I can have one always attached to each side?
You would need to contact the manufacturer to obtain accessories. If your progress is slow using the CTS program, try the new RSI program that I just posted and follow it for a few weeks. Good Luck!
@URehab I viewed the RSE program and want to give it a try. Where do I find the RSI program? I have the Flextend but the specific exercise sequence for RSI is not included. Also, I just ordered the kit to work on my rotator cuff injury. Will you be posting a video for that at some point? I find the videos extremely helpful! Thank you!
Send me a private message as it won't let me post the link to the RSI exercise program. Yes, I will be posting videos (Hopefully Soon!) for the AC-Kit that shows injury-specific programs. Thank you for your comments!
I have been using the Flextend for a few days. How soon should i feel results? CTS is worse than ever and I am seriously considering the cortisone shot.
For most, it takes a couple of weeks before relief is experienced. Make sure you are just following the program with 3-sets 2x daily EVERY OTHER DAY for the first week. Also, there is only one exercise to perform, and if you are stretching, only do it BEFORE the exercises.
If it is too painful and hurts to do the exercises, and you decide get the injection, be sure to follow the program as listed once the pain has minimized in order to correct the problem at the root source. Good luck and keep me posted!
@URehab Thank you so much for your advice and interest. My doc gave me an oral anti-inflammatory and I am also taking Curamin. Still doing your exercise. See very little improvement but am petrified of the shot, both the pain and long term effects. The exercises are not too painful to do so I plan to continue for a week or two and decide about the injection then.
Watch the CTS video again and review the speed of the exercises that are performed. The exercises are smooth, just, down and up and down and up. Don't do it really slow, or sit at the bottom end range of motion with your fingers spread apart and just sitting there "camping out" and stretching as this irritates the Median nerve by causing a "stretch reflex" to the nerve. Try performing the Palm-Up Isolated exercise in place of the Palm-Up Elbow Moving and see how it feels.
@URehab Thank you again. I was definitely moving too slowly, holding at the end and I think I started out with too much resistance I got the injection on the right wrist yesterday and will get the left side next week. In terms of muscle strength or muscles worked, what is the difference between the isolated and moving version? Once I'm through the outlined program, how do I use this as a preventative measure? Just want to say, love, love, love the product!!
Some of the stretches and exercises are the same as in the other injury programs I've posted. And yes, dysfunction of the thumb joint can be caused by many of the same factors that cause CTS and other repetitive strain injuries. Many times, I see clients that experience pain and dysfunction in the MP joint of the thumb (DeQuervain's Syndrome) prior to the onset of classic CTS symptoms. I will post a program for this next week and yes, Flextend is a critical component of the recovery process.
Hey I think I have tendonitis as apposed to CTS as the pain is only felt in my thumb and a small part in my index finger. Would the glove still be of use to me? If so are the stretches similar?
on his channel he has a video with free weights. mine has recently gotten much much much worse, excruciatingly painful, so i've stopped with arm weight training at the gym, which sucks, and i've only been doing CPS exercises and cardio...so, yeah.
Yes, if you use machines (Like Hammer Strength) where you can reduce the amount of gripping. (Ex. When doing biceps curls, chest, shoulder presses, etc. I place the bar across the base of my hand and keep the wrist in the straight, neutral position. This is advisable until the symptoms of CTS are gone. Once you have eliminated CTS, you will need to perform the corrertive exercises in relationship to the amount of gripping you are doing. More gripping = more corrective exercises.
But even in hammer strength the wrists will bend (just watched some hammer strength bench pressing on youtube). So basically hammer strength is better becuase although it will bend the wrist it doesn't make you grip the bar as hard and this is better than bending the wrist and gripping @ the same time?
What about using CTS wrist braces while lifting weights?
Correct. If I grip the handles or use the monkey-grip but don't allow my hands to slide/rotate forward and backward the wrist will bend. But when doing presses, etc., I can allow my hands to rotate/slide and therefore keep my wrists straight. It just takes practice. Because I love to train, I have learned to adapt by re-positioning myself in order to avoid pain and the possibility of further damage to the area.
Try the braces, but the metal bar on the wrist/palm may dig into the hand.
Thanks man the pain is alot less now!
