  • on 1:56 he says "hey remember how... (who????) ...used to walk out on the stage". He looks like Quico del Chavo del Ocho. jajaja

  • Like if you watched an old Texaco commercial right after this!

  • It's amazing to me how timeless this program was and is. To this day Mike's character is a truism vs. Archie. The lib/progressives still gripe the world is unfair and refuse to actually work for a days "bread" thinking life should be always equitable and fair. Their always looking for a hand out rather than a hand up. Arch just works keeps his nose to the grinding stone and speaks his mind. Wish we still had those days!

  • Sheila is Australian for a broad.

  • look at the liberal world we live in now Mike,...ya stupid liberal meathead!

  • Back then - the right wingers allowed the employers to anything they wanted to their employees. Thanks to left wing policies workers have a few more protections now.

  • the reason I love this show is because it deals with such important social issues. Also things that we are still dealing with today, especially this episode, the recession, I wish Tv was this good nowadays, hell I hardly even turn my TV on anymore, Thank God for Youtube, we can watch all of the good shows from the past, when TV was good, and people knew how to write good scripts and actors could act!

  • Guys, listen. You can't compare today's prices with 1975's. Back then, the cost of living was rising faster than income (double-digit inflation), interest rates on mortgages were double-digit, NYC was/is a very expensive place to live, etc., etc.

  • Aww, why did they fire Gloria? and my grandma is just like Edith, soo funny!

  • Yay! I am the 50th "poison" to rate this heah video thumbs up! RIP Carroll "Archie" O'Connor.

  • I don't know why they have problems with money.Didn't George Jefferson rent the house out for $170. per month ?

  • @demmylowther yeah I don't get that either.

    Basically $850 a month now, I reckon

  • @demmylowther Yes - but with Ford in (A republican) the economy was so horrific they were still going under. Nixon ruined the economy so badly - the entire country almost sank. Almost as bad as the Bush Depression we're in now.

  • @vintagyst WHOS SHEILA??????????

  • lol archie sure got trashed fast!

  • Mike's concerns are exactly why I tried to get out of teaching by moving into clinical pharma work--only to have that dry up as well! Word to the wise: don't try to become a teacher, especially a univ teacher!

  • It's like a variety show at 2:10!

  • "Pffffft!"

  • He can't afford to go to one movie? It's not like in 1975 movies were expensive. It would have been about $4 for Mike and Gloria to go to a movie.

  • @funkeekatt Yes but the income was relative to the times. $4 for them back then was probably like the $8-10 it is for us now with today's incomes.

  • lighten up folks don't put down or funny tv.cause tv sucks today so-real,reality shows.yuk, yuk

  • Mynjunkyard, thank you very much for posting all these clips !

  • @gocal777 They come at a price.

  • I think relatinships are the most romantic when the couples have little money between them, they love eachother for who they are and enjoy eachother's company without the superficial happiness of money.

  • You mean like you??? ^_^

  • Yea, like me. That's why I don't play in television series.

  • So funny how the Sheila character references "Cool Hand Luke;" Struthers had a famous scene in that movie!

  • In those days people would buy all their food at the beginning of the month because inflation was so bad that they couldn't afford the same food at the end of the month. There were 'dented can' stores, where you could buy canned food cheaper than in cans with no dents. People put in vegetable gardens & invested in freezers so they could stock up on food. Gas was rationed - you could only buy it on alternate days depending on if your license plate had an odd or even number. Worse than now.

  • "worse than now."?--give it a year or 2 and get back to me.

  • @LitCrit101 Yeah plus they had those giant gas guzzling boats! LOL I'm glad that I was not an adult during that time; it would have been a stinker. LOL

  • @LitCrit101 You're right, it was surely worse then than now. I was in elementary school back in the early/mid 70's and clearly remember all of those things. Green bax stamps, the energy crisis. There was also double-digit inflation and interest rates. Today as an adult, I highly respect my parents for being such good stewards for their money back then. It was rough times; but happy memories with my family. Times are definately better now than then.

  • @LitCrit101

Wow, when was it like that?

  • Irene just fixed the toilet in the ep before. Makes you wonder why they don't just call her.

  • I know back then teachers were not well paid but they could not have been that broke. Jefferson rented the place to them for like $160 or $165 per month. Gloria apparently was bringing home $80/week before she got fired.

How could they have been on a shoestring budget?

  • Well, there's still bills, food, transport, and after he was born, Joey's needs. So their money would get eaten up very quickly.

  • yeah those times were tough but we had family and were close

  • did you hear the audience member point out the obvious? Listen close at 2:50.

  • Amen!

  • Still live in rotten times there Mike ol'boy!

  • what ?

  • Um, no jobs, businesses closing, the war, etc. Should I go on!

  • @MeAndMyRC they are way more rotten now though I reckon.
