  • Lmao, I love how both of the top rated comments are about the guy at 1:17...

  • 4:06 "Bitch if you dont come back here soon im drinking your beer!"

  • it seems to sounded to creepy to those norways cuz they expected black raw metal.........but the jazzy death thrash of Cynic is high level metal for the whole world!!!!!!! hail CYNIC FOREVER GUYS!

  • Such a shame Mr. Malone doesn't play with them any more. Such a genius.

  • @Deimos365 He is on the soon to be released ep (carbon based anatomy). Besides re-traced he's pretty much been a studio artist. He doesn't tour do to other commitments.

  • 4:06 - thats was so fucking funny!! AHUAHUHUHAUHHAHHA

  • fucking hell, cool!

  • Rasputin approves @ 1:17

  • Is that actually Sean Malone on bass?!?! Can anyone confirm this for me please? Is it Sean Malone or Chris Kringel? I know what Robin Zeilhorst looks like, and it ain't him. Love the 6-string fretless! Meooowwwwww.

  • @OpethCommodore It's 100% Chris Kringel.

  • veryyyy veryyy talented \m/

  • awsome!they are smart,especially bass player

  • O holy fuck that dude in the rain coat has an exquisite beard. I want to sleep inside it.

  • Who is the guy with the blue v?

  • Not a very good show, but god damn these guys are amazing.

  • eargasm.

  • Paul is such a badass

  • Is this metal or jazz? Anyway, is fucking amazing!

  • @andrewizz

Both. And yes. It certainly is.

  • 0:19 cynic faith

  • cynic faith

  • My fave Cynic song. Used to listen to this over and over and over and over back when the album came out in 93.

  • @J3R1N427i Except it's not a Warwick, tis a Spector Legend.

  • Amazing Song! If you like that you should also check Counter-World Experience from germany...

  • 0:47

Oh shit... Is that Robin Zielhorst?

  • @Drakodan It's Chris Kringel haha.

  • @virajxpro No, I know Chris is the bassist, I mean in the audience.

  • This live version is by far better than the album recording

  • @BoundByBodom Man, I think Cynic sound waaaay better live than in the studio. The bass and drums become much livelier... would love to see Cynic put out a live album.

  • 1:17 Holy fuck, it's the antichrist wearing a waterproof hoodie.

  • @EtherealWaves Hahaha

  • Music of this band is simply great, wish i could say the same about singing...

Their "celestial voice" sounds to me little bit gay, and this problem with this band has many of my friends...

  • @skimam i had the same problem but after listening them for a little i got used to it. for me it was kinda aquired taste

  • Comment removed

  • @darkvampireshinigami it is with fretless bass, but chris kringels bass has lines on it

  • tanto tiempo que no escuchava a los papi... solo escuchen y pongan oreja...

  • awesome :D a true masterpiece in metal and in music in general, but not the same without the fretless bass :(

  • que hace devin towsend en elpublico

  • @ignacioffm Donde? :D

  • sexy intro

  • wonderful

  • I have never seen so calm rock-fans ^

  • 8 people here are feeling deprived. No wonder they can't feel the textures.

  • @SenseiDanIvan i think it's more like 8 people here aren't Simon....

  • Beautiful, enough said.

  • They look like normal persons, normal persons with a lot of talent.

  • haha, 4:08 "camera.." *turns head* "oh hey! I'm on TV!"

  • 8 people who watched this video are either deaf or know nothing about music.

  • such a sweet tone! First instrument to come in and it sounds fucking amazing!!!

  • I'm seeing Cynic at the El Rey Theatre in LA on July 22nd!!! ...it's their US headline tour kick-off concert...can't wait!

  • 1:39 looks like a bug is crawling across the singer's face.

  • 1:19 Zakk Wylde came to see Cynic to figure out how to make a good music:D:D:D ...just a joke...zakk rules, cynic too:D

  • or is it a charvel? no clue

  • @effigyoftheslamz pauls guitar is a stienberger chris's bass is a spector. not sure on david senescu's guitar though

  • @undeadbrood I think its a jackson

  • why does this jackson v has fucking stock pickups on it ? which are they?

  • @effigyoftheslamz He has rolland MIDI synethized pick ups on / in it as well to give it that awesome tone so the stock pick ups really arent that evident.

  • @effigyoftheslamz Maybe he likes stock pickups? Who fuckin cares?

  • Haha

  • was that Rob Zombie 1.18????

  • 1.18 ftw

  • whos playing bass here?

  • chris kringel

  • @StoneColdSoul07 i get what you mean unlike most peopleout there, but looking at it that way, i think noneof their songs are "made" specifically for live shows

  • The bass player is a fuckin BEAST!

  • his on-stage antics are odd. he squats all low and does a really weird and slow head twirl. a lot. it was awesome.

  • @iThrashNano Kris Kringle bro.

  • @iThrashNano The composer (Sean Malone) is a fuckin' beast, this guys rocks for sure but don't give him credit for what he doesn't deserve...

  • epic song. it sounds ridiculously difficult too.

  • @ljguitar91 i'm learning it on guitar now. it can get pretty technical at times, but its not TOO bad once you get the hang on if.

  • @BarnacleEd

Do you have tabs for it?

  • @SimplyCarey there is one on ultimate-guitar. i would post a direct link, but youtube seems to be freaking out on me.

  • great guitarists!. good work!

  • This is one of the best songs of the universe. Also, 4:06 is lol.

  • Cynic are magical

  • They aren't playing songs, they are playing with sounds. Just watch part which begins at 2:06. Simply amazing!

  • great song just learned how to play it.

  • Imo, apart from the sound production for the bass, this bass solo is better than Malone's. No disrespect towards Malone though. He wrote the original phrasing for this solo.

  • Best jazz-fusion track from metal band!

  • No band should play on stage unless they become this good, Cynic is another higher level.

  • @Mastafly7 I agree.

    Regardless, this is brilliant.

  • Try a bass boost :P

  • This song reminds me in some way to Mike Oldfield's sound... I like it!

I discovered Cynic some days ago and I'm very glad I did!

  • same lol

  • same here

  • @N0QU4RTER if you just discovered them you should check out their demos. it's an insane contrast to Focus

  • One of the most underrated and most talented- hands down.

Nice to see the guys still have it on stage after all these years. Sean's kit is tiny now but still sounds huge.

  • @monolith1989 i dont think anyone who has heard their music would consider them underrated. The niche they fill is often overlooked, how many people have thought to listen to progressive jazz metal? But the people that do know them almost universally understand their talent. Hell my mother likes a few of their songs.

  • that bass lined fretless?

  • yep its a fretless spector ns i think.

  • Lol 1:18.

  • gandalf the blue?

  • Your lame.

  • This is pro-shot! They actually focus on the right musicians during solos

  • yup, agree, even if i'm completely ignorant in sound engineering issues

  • My god!!! From 2:45 its the best bassplaying I ever heard! How... when... oh god!! Its awesome, and still I dont recognize it from the original song... Did I missed something??? The greatest prog-tech metal band alive!

  • @Iselsiaxel It's not the same solo as Sean Malone plays, still Kringel is a beast !!!

  • who is the bass player in this vid?

  • It's Chris Kringel. He played in Portal and went on tour with Cynic (1993-4)

  • cynic is amazing. they really created something new, and fresh:P theyre not following any trends or anything, just playing from the heart:P and i love that they managed to squeese in a fretless bassplayer^^ wich sounds awesome with this kind of music, something death proved with steve:P and im soz kiometalfan, im embarassed for you:O

  • @BoilingHumans There are few metal bands with a fretless bass, Cynic, Pestilence (Spheres' album, Jeroen Thesselling now in Obscura), Exivious, Obscura, Intronaut, Augury (well used to be fretless), Quo Vadis (since Defiant Imagination album) and I am pretty sure I forget other bands... still rare in metal though

  • @Synequanon Between The Buried And Me used a fretless on their newest album The Great Misdirect as well

  • @K3VIN552 Ohoh cool !

  • Caam0x, it's a Steinberger. They have a very unique sound due to the construction. It has a very synthetic sound, and it evens out the sound/pitches (for like of a better phrase) while accenting every note. Some people like it, some don't. They are great guitars, and Paul is playing an old model that I AM TOTALLY JEALOUS OF!

  • I think he's referring to the harmonizer-ized distortion parts. It is pretty grating on the ears.

  • I think I can honestly say that this is the single greatest piece of music I've ever heard from a metal band.

  • this is truly great but there r others that r just as good I recommend u get rid of the metal stereotypes and become engulfed in the genre

  • Cynic, Atheist, Gorguts, etc. (yes, even Gorguts) are not made to mosh to really, it's just to stand / sit there and absorb the music.

  • Exactly, I hate it when people say you are supposed to mosh to those bands. I never mosh when I watch bands like that, because I want to just watch them play while being surrounded by the amazing atmosphere the musicians create. Anata is another good example of a band like that.

  • no this isnt a moshing band nor r they brutal but they sure r very technical

  • Mark Morton and Willie Adler at 1:17?

  • Lol xD

  • reminds me of pat metheny stuff

  • yeah it kinda does

  • Totally agree. reminds me of Bright Size Life. Especially 1:37 - 2:22

  • i've been watching all the videos of this festival and all of them are full of hating comments about cynic, that with their songs you can't mosh, that this is not death metal...that's pathetic and ridiculous, just watch it and if you like it is ok if not, ok but nobody want your pathetic opinions!

  • Words of wisdom.

  • they r death and jazz but its true that they dun make many songs to mosh to but I recommend u listen to Uroboric Forms its their heaviest song and its awesome

  • Totally agree.

  • the bass player sounds a little bit like jaco pastorius... nice song.

  • right! the same faces :p

  • This is one of my favorite Cynic songs but I am still very unsure about why they chose an old school Metallica-ish riff to tie an interesting metal feel to a jazz song. I wonder how, while writing that riff, the implementation went? That'd be an awkward moment... Yeah, I'd love to be playing jazz and suddenly riff something like that to a band mate and see the response. Anyway, great video, that's for the upload!

  • Thats not an old school Metallica sound... That's not Metallica's signature sound, Metallica is all mostly 4/4 timing. This is not.

  • I wasn't talking about the time signature they are playing and I wasn't saying the sound was specifically attributed to Metallica. I was saying that breaking up a genius song with a fairly generic thrash riff strikes me as odd compared to anything else on either album. As experimental as they are it still seems weird. Even weirder then them doing Aeon Spoke. Also, I am very familiar with how boringly monotone most Metallica is and I was not even beginning to compare their ability to Cynic.

  • This song is fucking amazing. They play it a little differently than the Studio recording but it still sounds phenomenal.

  • It might sound diffrent because of all the guitar tracks that they used for the studio version.

  • It's not just because Jason left or because they layer the guitar tracks. Paul plays it differently live deliberately to compensate for the lack of multi-tracking. It's only slightly different from the Studio recording and still sounds just as good.

  • Breathtaking. I hope to see them someday in Latvia :)

  • Are they opening for some band? The crowd appears to be bored. A band of Cynic's magnitude should have an entire show to themselves.

  • the crowd is probably in awe, i know i would be

  • Yes, I suppose so.

  • This isn't exactly the kind of music you'd mosh too.

I don't think they're bored so much as they're just chilling out listening to the music.

  • hahahaha! Cynic sure had a hell of a mosh pit when i saw them last april

  • who sayed that metal isn't an art?

    this is art!!!! >=)

  • Cynic rules!!!

  • You need to hear the original version, if metal is your sole focus. The whole album, actually. Good call on their writing and musicianship.

  • KioMetalFan... you obviously have NO CLUE of Metal.....you probably listen to the NU METAL crap

  • Well, I definitely don't listen to Nu Metal... but I think i just misunderstood this band, this track by itself doesn't sound metal at all, but to my understanding all their other material is metal, my bad...

  • Who are you to judge what metal should sound like?

Doing whatever you want, making it however you want it to sound that's the real deal of music. You don't have to stick to one thing all the time.

  • I understand that, but personally I'm sick of every "tr00" metalhead saying.. "fuck your new age DM, listen to cynic, death, etc etc every 80's early 90's era DM band...."

So when someone told me to listen to this band because they're "real brutality" I personally didn't find this band to be "brutal" so I left a comment.

  • Well Cynic had more death metal in them in their early days and one of them used to play in Death..

But this band really is "brutal". If you play any instrument and try to learn to play their music you'll find it "brutal".. The music is highly technical. Weird time signatures and polyrhythm and such

As for the discussion about new era death metal band Vs. classic death metal band, I'll leave that to another day. Trend following or personal tastes it's up to you to decide

  • Trend following or personal tastes? Everything I listen to is my personal tastes...

So if people listen to 21st century metal they're following trends? Some of the stupidest shit i've heard all day.

And this band isn't "brutal" it's just an old school metal band..Brutal basically means heavy, not technical...

Music evolves over time, you may not like new age metal, but these days there's bands that can do this and MORE.. These guys are pioneers but they're not anything special IMO.

  • How aren't they anything special? Who else sounds anything like them? They're much more "special" then any other generic metal band.

  • Aren't you the same fag who tried to tell me that "death core" band with the EMO fag in it was actually worth listening to? Ha GTFO.

  • Huh? I'm talking about this band... not some random deathcore band....

Try to refrain from sending comments to me that are utterly random.

  • Read what I said man. It just shows your taste in music blows. You listen to that gay carnifag shit which doesnt even compare to this so you dont really have an opinion that matters.

  • Ugh, if you want to bring up past comments..then fine.

I never said I listened to Carnifex, for all you know I could have hated the band, but you said "This isn't deathcore look at the EMO FAG" Then I replied by saying genres and fashion trends have absolutely nothing in common.

Now I can respect this band for its influences, but I personally wouldn't bother listening to them. It's just not my cup of tea, plus who are you to say who should talk? You can't even come up with a logical comeback.

  • Brutal has nothing to do with technical. At all. Brutal is pretty trendy today anyway.

  • both sean and paul played in death

  • ur right this band isnt brutal but it is most certaintly metal and they have an astounding amount of talent thats y ppl recommend them

  • Fantastic stuff. This is the first time I've heard any of Cynic's music for a long time and it's brilliant. Great to hear them playing music again.

  • omg... Just beautifull...

  • talk about fripp influence

  • Definitely. Reminds me a bit of Larks Tongues in Aspic.

  • Comment removed

  • ya this shit is fuckin badass

  • This song gives me the chills everytime I listen to it.

  • Gave me chills too. It's so serene and beautiful.

  • Its gotta be one of the badest metal tunes!!!!

  • "the faceless are pretty good, but there's no way they deserve to be lumped in with greats like death atheist and cynic. those three were totally unique musical pioneers"

    Exactly.

  • SEEING THEM TOMORROW!!!!!

  • Dude, we totally just saw them together yesterday haha

  • nevertheless, amazing song.
