Great movie. Here in Portland, Oregon we have a science fiction and fantasy convention called Orycon. Three years ago we had an Orycon which featured Peter S. Beagle the one who wrote the book and screenplay to this great movie. I had the pleasure of meeting him and I can say Mr. Beagle is an excellent songwriter/writer and a wonderful man. As a matter of fact one of his songs "Magician's Wives" inspired an idea I want to have turned into an animated series one day.
@volkswag12 Why would she be happy to be Human? She is one of the most precious, and beautiful things alive as she is, to be a human would completely tarnish every thing she is. x
@volkswag12 Humanity, as a whole today is purely carnal, consumerist, destructive and selfish...we have all but destroyed the Earth and countless species. It's a state to overcome, nothing to be proud of. In the movie this is demonstrated very well. But so is the better side of what we could be, and a few of us are...Good luck to us all.
@0flying0unicorn0 Well, half-anime anyway. It was written and directed by the American Rankin-Bass production company, but animated by the Japanese studio Topcraft, which later became Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc.).
The oldschool drawings were so goth. They have a wormth and a mystery. With all the technology in the world they never did any program to simulate the drawed animations.
They keep making them more digital and less artistic.
i love the music that plays first in the forest. i love this movie so much, the time it takes place in, where it takes place, and that its a proper fairy tale, which really does matter.
I truly hope no one (Disney, Warner Brothers, Fox, etc) ever tries to make a new Last Unicorn movie. No matter how great the animation (if they are smart and went with hand-drawn animation) or CGI effects (if they are cruel and decide to either make it completely CGI or a combination of CGI and live-action like the Scooby Doo movies), or how famous the actors, it just wouldn't hold up to this classic. And they'd ruin the story with "new" jokes/dialogue and Amlathea marrying Lir.
@kikithewolfprincess Never saw that movie but I just saw a preview because of your comment. I wish I was watching the Flight of Dragons at my young age instead of The Last Unicorn!
I just read the book and I LOVE IT, and its just as good as the movie. Its sad that they don't make movies like this anyone. Speaking of the movie I have it in my dvd binder and it calls to me to watch it again.
Sad thing is my brothers wife has never seen this movie yet has seen Secret of NIMH. I've been trying to get them to watch it with me but with no avail. Wish me luck.
really an awesome book and movie...the imagery is incredible, the themes are anything but childish, and hey, at the end Prince Lir says he'll still love Amalthea even if she turns back into a unicorn (weirdo?)...what's not to love?? :D
Just because this movie doesn't have 2011 standard animation, doesn't mean it sucks. Jesus people, is there no pleasing you? >:I This is one movie that actually has aged very well, both as a stand-along and compared to others.
@LathrineJadehawk Who says this does not entertain Jesus people (Christians)? I am a very strong Christian and this movie was very strong entertainment for this very strong Christian. We Christians believe in fun if you think we don't. If they don't like it, it's their opinion.
@rofflemows2 King Haggard, the giggling skull, the tree that tried to smother Schmenderick with her breasts, Captain Cully, Jack Jingly, Mommy Fortuna, Rook, the harpy Celano, the dragon Lir killed to impress the lady Amalthea, Mabrook the marvelous magician, the dragon from Mommy Fortuna's carnival, the dodos in the unicorn's forest that were killed while she was looking for the other unicorns, and the Red Bull disliked this video.
It is said that whatever pond, no matter how toxic, a unicorn dips its horn in, the water shall become safe to drink. It is also told that wealthy people used to own unicorn horns, and they would drink from it if they were ever fatally ill.
It's a shame that the greatest works of art are unknown in the minds of today's youth... If you tell an eight year old child you watched the last unicorn last night, or that you read a wondrous book called The Last Unicorn, they will think you were a five year old living in a teenager's body! And not many people know this, either: Unicorns aren't always plain white horses with a horn. The most common appearance I've read about is a stag with a pig tail and elephant feet.
I used to watch this movie every chance I got when I was a wee bairn. Whenever my friend Jessica spent the night, we rented it from Blockbuster. Oh, the purity of the last unicorn... I felt so close to the pure unicorn. Then 12 years later, some Canadian douche took my virginity after plying me with wine all night. Not so pure after all, eh?
Ah, beautiful HAND DRAWN art. The good kind. The animation in this movie is so beautiful. I thought so as a child and I do now. Even at 19, I sometimes rewatch this movie just after watching it. Not only that, the book is amazing. Seriously.
Absolutely love this movie. Have since I was a child. Ran out and bought it on Blu-Ray as soon as I could. Let's hope for Flight of Dragons to follow suit.
i loved this movie soo much i watched it all the time when i was little but then my brother broke it cuz it was the old vcr version now i gotta find the dvd haha
Holy Sh*t! I watched this in the 80s, I was born in 1985 but I remember this being one of my FAVORITE movies during my childhood~!! This opening is so EPIC! I'm 25 now, but I'll admit... this song and opening made me CRY each time, hell I cried tonight and I'm 25 now. But... this movie was in storage on VHS for so long that all those memories came flooding back and... during the opening I CRIED! Again... Damn it!! so damn good!! Thank you for putting this up!!
I remember my sister had the VHS way back in the day like the 80's... but it got destroyed somehow and I had totally forgotten about this movie's existence... and I forget how I stumbled upon this... The opening is awesome, as is the VA's But yeah I'd like to watch the full thing once more.
@muzicluver5897 I KNEW I always hated that saying "Red Bull gives you wings" from some way back in my childhood! Now I remember!! "Reb Bull gives you wings!" No it doesn't!! It drives unicorns into the ocean damn it!! Rofl, j/k an inside joke between us who enjoyed this movie :P
@CrYpTiiCxVizioN I was born in 1985, this was my favorite movie. I'm 25 today, I watched this opening for the first time in like 10 or more years and I CRIED!!! So don't feel bad, no movie opening was ever this good!
This song reminds me of the stunning tapestries that I saw at the Cluny museum in Paris (Latin quarter)... incredibly beautiful. This song gives goosebumps (in a good way), although not sure why. Haven't seen the film, looks enchanting. Thankyou so much, lovely video, great job, with a message of hope!!
I remember watching this as a child and, a few years later in seventh grade, I came across a book in a thriftshop about unicorns. Seeing the repro tapestries reminded me of this film beautiful introduction (complete with melody).
I came to the book and film late but its one of the best every made, it makes me sad because the side story is about what people r like and it still hold up today some people r out for what they can get and dont care who or what gets hurt in the proccess. I agree that watership down is a classic but its not one i like i can remember as a kid it freaking me out because of its imagrey and the subject matter

When I was little -and it wasn't that long ago, I'm only 15- these kind of movies, with courage, hope, and magic, (not to mention hand-draw animation) were still as big as when this movie first came out. Now how are kids movies made? With tacky 3D animation and pop stars. Where are the times going? I'm too young to be nostalgic over simpler times!!
On the last days of earth when every thing is dieing and there will be no tomorrow.... she will appear..to give us hope ... to show us at last how to live...
this song/movie is so beautiful and powerful, it has the ability to make you cry for no reason and experience a flood of childhood memories. absolutely breathtaking.
some may say the animation stinks, but i say it's a work of art! That's how it's supposed to be! Entertaining and lyrically beautifully in every artistic way! :D
lolz i still watch this movie this is the only movie like this i like idk why....it never got to seem stupid to me even though i'm not a little kid....lolz i know every word to this movie......i'm a nerd deal with it
Ahhh this is so amazingly pretty :'D I love how eloquent the book was, the movie is equally as good, unlike the movie adaptations nowadays. They always butcher the story in one way or another. But anyway, thanks for putting it up ^^
This is everything a film should be. I loved reading the book and this will always be the greatest memory of my childhood. As beautiful as the new animation technology may be, this has true magic in it.
A word of advice. Do not answer your younger viewers questions about whether this is a Disney movie, or has Hannah Montana in it. If they persist, tell them if they stay for the whole movie, you will show them some undeniably good cartoons from your childhood (Nobody has actually seen a Mickey Mouse short in like forever!). If they keep at it, tell them you will threaten to reveal who kills Dumbledore.
I have this on dvd and want to show it to my niece. I hope she likes it and doesn't get bored. I saw this when I was her age and loved it.
Lately kids have been trained by many media outlets to not think to hard about a plot or have patience. Almost everything seems to be a string of flashy sound bites and advertising.
Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lee... I had no idea so many big names were in the movie I grew up watching!!! 4:46 Screenplay by Peter S. Beagle. No wonder the movie's so good. They should always let the author of the book write the screenplay. lol
I may be a guy, but darnit this movie is amazing. Both The Last Unicorn and The Flight of Dragons have that sad "shedding of childhood" message, that sombre acceptance of the loss of all that is magical and carefree in the earlier years in exchange for the harshness of reality.
Also, look at the grammar and vocabulary just in this song, "And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn/ in the distance hear the laughter of the last unicorn". Today we get dumb fart jokes.
@frodowise Agreed! I'm all yeah yeah wats up today but The Last Unicorn still holds a firm place in my heart as the main animated movie of my childhood.
i love the movie, i sat down with my family --all younger than me-- and they immidietly said, "does this have Disney princess's and stories? (like Cinderella)" when i said no, they wanted to leave the room terribly. It made me angry, what happened to the fun and greetings and imagination around here? or is THAT the fairytale these days?! i wish people appreciated the old movies more... sorry to get anyone angry if i did.
@LiviBurnstone No you had every right to be upset. Of course you love your family very much. Its just that people can seriouslt be obvious and forgot true memories when they're older. Doesn't mean all will forget, that's just how THEY ARE. Not you. Nor me. Or The rest have a strong apperciation for these.
The third verse of the song is particularly evocative--it suggests that, even should the world come apart at the seams, the last unicorn would pierce the veil of gloom and ascend to the heavens, without ever tasting death, resplendent in all her glory. "Look and see her, how she sparkles--it's the last unicorn!" That's right, b----es. Sparkling in the sunlight is for unicorns. Not vampires.
@kungfufencing Dude, faeries are cooler. If you read The Modern Faerie Tale Series by Holly Black and Changeling by Delia Sherman, they are even more awesome. I love them.
@MagicansForce Same here! Most of the artwork in this film looks as though it's influenced by medieval imaginations. I think the illustrator of the Hobbit probably took the same approach when they worked on Tolkein's book, knowing that he based the whole thing on medieval literary styles and traditions. In any case, I haven't seen that edition of the Hobbit in years, but I can remember almost every drawing.
@AlmoxPrincessJ Nowadays there's also a fuck load of open pedophilia in anime too (as well as american cartoons, ie Brats/child prostitutes). It's down right sickenings. ;-; I miss good old animation like this <3
Wonderful memories!!!!!!

some may say the animation stinks, but i say it's a work of art! That's how it's supposed to be! Entertaining and lyrically beautifully in every artistic way! :D

I wish they'd make cartoons like these...

this will always be one of my very favorite movies!
mogwip12 1 year ago
A word of advice. Do not answer your younger viewers questions about whether this is a Disney movie, or has Hannah Montana in it. If they persist, tell them if they stay for the whole movie, you will show them some undeniably good cartoons from your childhood (Nobody has actually seen a Mickey Mouse short in like forever!). If they keep at it, tell them you will threaten to reveal who kills Dumbledore.

Why do these stupid cunts disallow embedding as if they have copyright to these videos? CUNTS

@frodowise Exactly, They don't make Cartoons or films like this anymore
Lillian2167 1 year ago 82
@frodowise Agreed! I'm all yeah yeah wats up today but The Last Unicorn still holds a firm place in my heart as the main animated movie of my childhood.

@frodowise yea, I know. It sucks. We should put more stuff like this on tv.

i love the movie, i sat down with my family --all younger than me-- and they immidietly said, "does this have Disney princess's and stories? (like Cinderella)" when i said no, they wanted to leave the room terribly. It made me angry, what happened to the fun and greetings and imagination around here? or is THAT the fairytale these days?! i wish people appreciated the old movies more... sorry to get anyone angry if i did.
LiviBurnstone 1 year ago

@RobobTheGreat Your talking about that damned Twilight Movie aren't you...

@RobobTheGreat No vampires in twilight. Only sparkle fairies.

I've only ever seen this in German, but what I love about it is the fact, that the king was spoken by Christopher Lee, in German. Greatness.

This art reminds me of the old, first version of The Hobbit.
MagicansForce 2 years ago 3
It's produced by the same studio and production team.
ConkadeWonko 2 years ago 3
@MagicansForce Same here! Most of the artwork in this film looks as though it's influenced by medieval imaginations. I think the illustrator of the Hobbit probably took the same approach when they worked on Tolkein's book, knowing that he based the whole thing on medieval literary styles and traditions. In any case, I haven't seen that edition of the Hobbit in years, but I can remember almost every drawing.

i love the movie, love the old anime-style! that´s a little bit retro, like history.
i adore the ld style fo anime.that´was a great fabulous work. but now...there isn´t the same, look at this, all of crime, blood, and war.
but this one, it´s very? mysterious and you can think about this!
this one and watership down are the best comic or cartoon movies on earth, and i think they are treasures in someway.
