why people on both sides of this debate always insist on using a hierarchy to describe how "important" a theory or law is? It's like trying to say that a car's engine block is more important than the design principles used in the cars design or the other way around. Both are important. Just read a simple book like "Why evolution is true" just for starters (and I mean just for starters)But string theory seems to need to be a bit more robust in the evidence department before we give it that status.

But we're taught the same evolutionary evidence and models as everyone else in high school biology. In science, a "fact" is just a piece of data. in science a "theory" is a collection of these pieces of data that has been tested and found to be a working model. out side of the scientific community,we use theory to mean a hypothysis or hunch but scientist don't. we use "fact" to mean something that is absolutely true. scientists dont. thats where the ignorance comes through. Creationists try to confuse the two so that you dont trust science.

And the term 'fittest' simply refers to those traits that most suit the environment. Not neccesarily strength and courage and all those other noble things commonly associated with the word. Lets say there is a genetic mutation that means a wildebeast is likely to want to 'team up'. Its only gonna work to the benefit of this genetic trait if there are numerous other wildebeast with exactly the same mutation who would also want to participate. The chances of this happening simultaneously in a single herd on a large enough scale is tiny.

I'd forgotten a science and religion course I took in junior college that was great and memorable. It was official church doctrine that the sun revolved around the earth. The Inquisition tried Galileo, and put him under house arrest near the end of his life because of his heliocentric theory (which we all recognize now as accurate, whether religious or not).

It is fact that global warming is occurring in some parts of the globe, I have heard this since I was a child in the 70s, by 1990s Florida was supposed to be under water as well as California but with all that melting up to the year 2009 are any of these cities under water? Scientific finding show that the planet has heat & cold cycles as the sun changes solar activity. It shows the heat rises first. The rise in heat is the cause of natural carbon dioxide, not the other way around. Not to say artificially pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere has any effects, it does. The evolution of tetrapods from fish is well documented and understood. Similarly, Whales evolved from land animals to fully marine forms in only 10 million years or so. There has been plenty of time on earth for evolution to do these things.

i love the change of use and understanding of the word THEORY until recent years they trying to back track on the original use of the word, hypothisis or guess was its meaning, it was used so that the scientist could avoid the 17th century "power hungry leaders" of the church would not have them killed.. now it is the top of the mountain, but it can change, while facts remain bottom and are solid.. sounds like the facts are the earth we stand on and theories are the wind that blows by..

why people on both sides of this debate always insist on using a hierarchy to describe how "important" a theory or law is? It's like trying to say that a car's engine block is more important than the design principles used in the cars design or the other way around. Both are important. I agree that theories ideally represent a unified model of systems that is backed strongly by evidence, but often even in the science community theory is thrown around a little too easily

Randy, you mis-type in your description of the video that "Christians are taught" some kind of a lie about evolution. But we're taught the same evolutionary evidence and models as everyone else in high school biology. Christianity, being a religion, doesn't really talk about science--apart from when science is used to discuss the religion or when science is drawn into discussions of ethics (as it should be). You yourself recognize that it's only those who are ignorant who don't realize this.

In science, a "fact" is just a piece of data. in science a "theory" is a collection of these pieces of data that has been tested and found to be a working model. out side of the scientific community,we use theory to mean a hypothysis or hunch but scientist don't. we use "fact" to mean something that is absolutely true. scientists dont. thats where the ignorance comes through. Creationists try to confuse the two so that you dont trust science.

Think of it terms of Theoretical and Practical Science.
Practical science is almost always equals technological benefit. Most of these inventions come from people who do other jobs, like engineers and many times laymen.
Theoretical science bases itself on its own conjecture and uses its own language and vocabulary. Unfortunately these conclusions are too often taken as "fact" or "proven" (i.e. wormholes, black holes, evolution, etc.) when they are really fairy tales like any other myth.

@MrProgressivelib Remember that radiometric dating deals with time spans of billions of years, so yes there will be a few million years margin of error. still makes the dating method valid, as it shows that the Earth is billions of years old, and not 10000. 10000 and billions is a much larger margin of error, so big fail for religion

Scientists dont take creationists seriously because unlike evolution it doesnt provide the opportunity to be disproven. Everything can simply be answered with 'because god made it that way'. Lets say there is a genetic mutation that means a wildebeast is likely to want to 'team up'. Its only gonna work to the benefit of this genetic trait if there are numerous other wildebeast with exactly the same mutation who would also want to participate. The chances of this happening simultaneously in a single herd on a large enough scale is tiny.

Well the headlights one is easy. Cars have not been around long enough and do not kill enough 'slow' deer for the evolutionary process to have kicked in in any noticable way. Same with the dolphin thing. The wildebeast thing is because evolution is about survival of individuals. The wildebeast who are more likley to team up and defend are also more likely to be killed and thus the 'bravery' trait doesnt get passed on. Its the cowardly wildebeast who are more likely to survive and reproduce.

Well, I watched this video again, and can really appreciate it. A lot of the comments on this page are pretty intelligent, too. I'd forgotten a science and religion course I took in junior college that was great and memorable. It was official church doctrine that the sun revolved around the earth. The Inquisition tried Galileo, and put him under house arrest near the end of his life because of his heliocentric theory (which we all recognize now as accurate, whether religious or not).

You cant get away with falsifying anything that passes through peer review which most scientists submit their work to. I think it is fairly easy to to find the corruption or the collaborators for industrial profits through actions but you see, it is not people with no knowledge who go up against the majority, it is fellow scientists who have the education, who have the degrees, they were hired onto the particular board or governmental department due to their knowledge & when they present facts that the majority refuse to look at are fired or their life threatened by their peers. It is fact that global warming is occurring in some parts of the globe, I have heard this since I was a child in the 70s, by 1990s Florida was supposed to be under water as well as California but with all that melting up to the year 2009 are any of these cities under water? That would sure make a great tourist trap for submarine rides but no cities are under water & they won't be as one scientist was fired for publishing a paper showing the melt off is being redistributed elsewhere

Scientific finding show that the planet has heat & cold cycles as the sun changes solar activity. It shows the heat rises first. The rise in heat is the cause of natural carbon dioxide, not the other way around. Not to say artificially pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere has any effects, it does. Everything we do on this planet has effects on weather but to blame global warming 100% on carbon emissions is incorrect to do so

God did create the universe because if you think about it, there can be no big bang without God. The Law of Physics states that an object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by an outside force, therefore an outside force acted upon the alleged ball of matter that blew up causing the big bang. "MAY" in that example doesnt not mean "If you feel like it "or possibly could be" "may" in your example means "can be done" or "be able to" basically the sentance reads

"May be able to" makes much more sense. "Be able to" cannot stand by itself it's illogical. It's a phrase without meaning.

you think fact= truth.but they dont always mean that.
science does not automatically trust something that is said as a fact. a fact is just a piece of data to be tested. laws are a collection of tested and verified facts and theories are a collection of verified and tested laws.
science doesnt even accept a law. it tests it over and over again. scientists have been trying to prove evolution wrong for 150 years. evolution is tested everyday in medicine

I came about because my parents copulated, then my mother gestated and gave birth to me. Their parents did the same things that caused them to "come about." Lather, rinse, repeat, retroactively through time, and you'll get the general idea.
The evolution of tetrapods from fish is well documented and understood. Similarly, Whales evolved from land animals to fully marine forms in only 10 million years or so. There has been plenty of time on earth for evolution to do these things.

Interesting. Although I still find it comical how many people don't believe evolution because, and I quote, "How could we evolve from monkeys? Why arent humans walking out of forests?"... the answer... we didn't evolve from monkeys, we have a common ancestor, most likely the australopithecus. I don't see why a sever adaptation to your environment is so hard to believe, but I guess if the bible were to say that gravity doesn't exist, its god holding you down gravity wouldnt exist either would it?

even if evolution is real , which i believe it is, it does not disprove the existence of a creator. please do not equate people who believe in a higher order with mainline christians who believe nothing more than a compilation of stories which have been tampered with and changed dozens of times over the last 1700 years or so.

how many times must we test something succesfully before we are allowed to believe we are correct? Lately people have been trying to turn the fact that not being open to fairy tales that fail EVERY single scientific test given to them is being closed minded and dogmatic.
The only way to be sure of something is to test it over and over again. evolution is tested hundreds of times a day in hospitals,viral labs, and science departments. it passes every test.

As you were saying though, Parts of it are proven but you can't say that the intire thing is solid. Look at the evidence. We have apes, the closest thing intellectually to humans. Theory of Evolution says that animals adapt to survive. Well apes have 48 chromosomes, and humans only have 46. So do you suppose in the change they just dropped the other two?

Apes have one less than us and it had been proven that that one chromosome is fused with another.we have the same number actually except for the conjoined chromosome. we dont have all the answers. but we have 95%. religion, so far ,has none. Their answer to it all is "It's magic" thats all they offer. and delusionals get really mad when magic isn't good enough. you can shoot down the theory that holds 95% but that doesnt mean the one with 0% holds true. you have to offer something testable.
