he crys and gets emotional because... when he was 10 his dad died from cancer and when at the funeral billie ran home and licked himself in his room. when his mom knocked on his door he just kept screaming and crying " wake me up when September ends" ( because he died in September) and that's were the song came from. that is the full reason why it means a lot to him and why he crys ... god bless you billie and R.I.P billies dad forever. 

And I agree, I think Billie Joe's ability to show his true self and reject superficiality really contributes to what an incredibly amazing musician he is. After all, music (at least good music) pretty much is like pure emotion, and it's just not nearly as good when a person doesn't put their heart into it like he does.
