Marvin is speaking from the afterlife... This song was released in 1971. 41 years later it still has topics coming from current events.. troubled economy, war, civil unrest..crime, police brutality. Was he trying to send us a message? This song stands for a message for mankind.
I was once asked "If you could meet with someone, living or dead, who would you pick?" What a wonderful, reflective question. Today, my answer is Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Marvin Gaye.

AIN'T IT SOMETHING THAT A SONG LIKE THIS HAS THE TRUE NATURE OF WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW TODAY. MARVIN WAY AHEAD OF HIS TIME, WE MISS U AND MISS THE MESSAGE OF YOU MUSIC MORE, THANK YOU.
pnojazz-apparently you are of the class of the few who discerns reality from deception. You remark was as we used to say"right on". If we listen to the artists of the 60's-70's the majority of them were bringing messages of pending danger, and warning those "who have an ear to hear truth". Thank you for your accurate depiction of what is occurring in our world now, and not being negative it is destined to get a lot worse, just as Marvin Gaye sang prophetically, peop;le look at the signs. WAKEUP
Nothing anti-american here, just Marvin speaking to the truth, good & bad. that's as American as you can get. this is timeless and reaffirming, a time when unity was the theme, not diversity. I miss Marvin. I miss Curtis. I miss Lennon and Elvis. I miss the feeling that we could solve anything with a little help from friends. I miss the innocence but most of all I miss the civil discourse and discussion as opposed to the infants (young and old) on here talking loud and saying nothing.
If he were alive today, I promise wouldn't NOBODY have nothin' on him! He was bad! & even though he was WAYYY before my time... i grew up to this. Got a dad that looks & sounds like him & a mom thats just like Chaka Khan lol my 19 years been through it all musically!

Right on about the critic on the US but that does not say anything about Marvin Gaye's music or all of the other very talented musicians that the country also has. The use of the word God in a positive sense already inspires responses and answers to prayers. In the strictly biblical sense of the word prophecy is the ability to foresee the future and not the ability to make great music. Divinipotens, powerful in Gods ways is the latin word for it.

Thank you Marvin Gaye for this wonderful song along with the many others you have left us with. Also, I want to thank all of the "brothers" I was in the Marine Corps with in 1972, Camp Pendleton, CA who introduced me to Marvin Gaye and the other great soul music. The garbage they are passing off today doesn't even bear comparing with a song like this. To all of my fellow Marines, past and present, SEMPER FI. Corporal Mac. M. USMC 1972-1978
This song takes it's whole sens right now in nowadays. While the rich get richer and the poor poorer. While a man kills 80 people in Norway. Damn guns and drugs... Always taking the good ones. I know that's not always the case, but Marvin Gaye was a one-time talent to ever hit this planet, and we'll never see that again. When I get much older, if I'm deaf, pray I be able to read his lyrics. If I'm blind, pray I'm able to still hear his music.
Also, I guess Marvin's dad had time to login and hit the dislike button from jail.
These issues are still prevalent in American society. The question is why? How come we can't learn from our mistakes? My bills are still piled up sky high ,and my brother was sent to Iraq and died. And I'm paying installments on my taxes and student loans.
@suicidetower fuck u bitch go live in another country if u don't like it here this music is great because of the production and the singing not because of the anti-american lyrics yo nigger got RICH in the usa go somewhere else with that shit
@elvispresley718 Yes, I totally agree. Differing opinion and exploiting the ability to express it is anti-American. The country that brought democracy to the modern age would be a lot better had it exiled all that spoke out against current policies. Democracy is best with a one party system.
@thepoopie2 clearly, people like you who take out loans without the means to pay them back are not part of the problem. right? you are the problem, but instead of realizing your failures, you wallow in your own self pity all the while thinking you are privied to some sort of entitlement. YOU need to learn from YOUR mistakes you stupid faggot. here, you want to solve some issues with american society? kill yourself because you're a worthless human being and contribute nothing to society.
@StringTherapy Thanks. Babbitt has an impressive hit list not only at Motown but I believe with TSOP. I'm not discounting Bob Babbitt, I always thought the overdub was Jamerson.
James Jamerson's bass work was integral to Marvin Gaye's vision for this album to the extent that Marvin sought him out even though Jamerson was being marginalized at the time at Motown. It's not an issue of who's playing bass between Jamerson and Babbitt but WHO was selected as PRIMARY on the KEY songs. I totally agree with Marvin.
@mimisha24 the whole album is a master piece. everybody from my generation had this when it came out. back in the day, and we still love it, plus still play it. umm it's great.
I believe it's both Bob Babbitt AND James Jamerson playing bass on this song. There are clearly two basses interplaying and if I'm not mistaken , the liner credits both players on this particular song. Jamerson was the primary on four songs in this album.
Nothing has changed since Marvin wrote this masterpiece. The government are still ripping us off and lying to us. The environment is getting worse and the rainforests are still disappearing, food and electric are gettng impossible to pay for, and the cops are still trigger-happy bastards. God knows where we're heading.....Marvin had it right.
Just beautiful...Riding the subway to this makes you really reflect upon life and how much we are living backwards when the only way is forward...It's a shame that this song makes more sense now since it was first released. Rest In Peace Marvin Gaye.
@danilomarrone Wrong it's Bob Babbitt on the bass. He was one of the Funk Brothers too. He didn't play on a lot of songs. But you can hear that it's not really James Jamerson style. Jamerson's style is much more complicated.
@shadowmixx wow i so agree with you on that comment. Marvin had his faults and so do we all but he sang about the problems of that time and unfortunately we are living those same problems. Was he ahead of his time.
@shadowmixx I could not have said it better. you took me to another level with that statement cause its the truth. what if he had not died what would his music be based upon today.
@sootyandsweep33 He made this song for this and the last century, because this trouble dont stop here its on going. what can we change ? we caint direct our steps alone there is a higher being. JEHOVAH.
Gret song Marvin nothing much has changed though unfourtanely and it wont my optimism has been well and truly hammered over the years but brothers and sisters all we can do is keep on keeping on love@light.

Greed! US notions of “freedom and democracy” the “American dream” and “justice for all” are myths.
Fact:US has 25% of the worlds prison population but only 4% of its people.
Fact:Less social mobility than any OECD country, with the exception of the UK which has far better social welfare and equity
Fact:At war for most of my 50+ years
Fact:Worlds biggest arms seller
Fact:51% of global military spending.
A few use 'freedom' to get richer at any cost, as with the recent WFC and Iraq war

@53rexford you wish your were my boyfriend asshole!
elvispresley718 1 month ago

Bob Babbitt played bass on this song
StringTherapy 6 months ago
@StringTherapy Thanks. Babbitt has an impressive hit list not only at Motown but I believe with TSOP. I'm not discounting Bob Babbitt, I always thought the overdub was Jamerson.
sameeh109 6 months ago
@sameeh109 me too but he was influenced by jamerson so your assumption is merited

I totally agree with Marvin.
sameeh109 6 months ago
I wonder if they knew they were making timeless music back then. The issues in this song reflect the same issues we have in 2011.

Had to pause the first 5 minutes of the movie Knockaround Guys to find this song. Sadly it's my first time hearing it but wont be my last.

@mimisha24 the whole album is a master piece. everybody from my generation had this when it came out. back in the day, and we still love it, plus still play it. umm it's great.

Jamerson....Babbitt: With all due respect to both of these geniuses, forget about which one is playing the bass guitar and focus on Marvin's message.

I believe it's both Bob Babbitt AND James Jamerson playing bass on this song. There are clearly two basses interplaying and if I'm not mistaken , the liner credits both players on this particular song. Jamerson was the primary on four songs in this album.
sameeh109 7 months ago
@sameeh109 Jamerson played on the first 5 songs. Bob played on the last 4.

this song sounds like 2011. and beyond.

Rest In Peace Marvin Gaye.
rohitganesh100 7 months ago
That's James Jamerson on bass. The story goes that Marvin wouldn't record a new solo album unless Jamerson was available. Two legends.
danilomarrone 8 months ago
@danilomarrone Wrong it's Bob Babbitt on the bass. He was one of the Funk Brothers too. He didn't play on a lot of songs. But you can hear that it's not really James Jamerson style. Jamerson's style is much more complicated.
LouisHaynes2 8 months ago
@LouisHaynes2 Thanks for the correction. Bob Babbitt is another monster on the bass.

Incredibly incredible. A 'masterpiece' unto itself.
All of the 'dreadlocked', 'tattooed', 'platinum grilled', 'bottlepopping', 'bootydropping'
'autotuned' emptiness of some of todays music could NEVER measure up 2 the realness of this song.
This is life,...and the reality thereof.
Rest In Peace Mr. Gaye
(we miss U man)

@shadowmixx wow i so agree with you on that comment. Marvin had his faults and so do we all but he sang about the problems of that time and unfortunately we are living those same problems. Was he ahead of his time.
dreid1500 9 months ago
@shadowmixx I could not have said it better. you took me to another level with that statement cause its the truth. what if he had not died what would his music be based upon today.
