i love the look of this knife and the small body of it, unfortunately i cannot purchase one cause i can never find them online and if i do they are way overpriced
I'm not trying to be arrogant or anything, so don't take it the wrong way, just want an opinion or two. Is there really any advantage to having a knife with the traditional design that Spyderco has? With the fat, but short blade, and the very thick, circular thumb opening hole? Maybe other than the size, becasue I would think it's good for every day carry ?(EDC) since it's so small.
The curved handle/blade means slashes are deep, yet it doesn't sacrifice quick stabs, even with a 2" blade. It's like having the best of a hawkbill and a spearpoint rolled into one.
Combine that with good grip and you have an amazing knife for the size. It's a bit heavy for its size at 3 ounces, but it still manages to be easy to carry.
If you want one, grab it before they're all gone. It was recently discontinued.
Nope, mine's in pretty bad condition from abuse- *ahm* "excessive" use. ;-) Pretty beat up. I'm probably going to pick up another one whenever I can as a Safe Queen. Expensive, yes, worth it? HELL YA!!!
I normally h8te SS on my knives, HOWEVER, on the Lava it is def. better then any other knives I've tried. The way the Lava's choil and handle is situated neutralizes and problems you may otherwise have with SS. Pause the vid when the Lava is in hand, and you'll see what I mean.
If you can, see if you can handle the Lava, really the only way to see if it fits you. ;-)
hey lordspyderco, do you have a subcom? i want a small SD folder and i noticed its in your tags in the info, i'm torn between a wharncliffe or this baby and i'm curious to see how they compare side by side. im sure this is more solid and substantial...but also, as you mentioned, significantly more expensive!
I no longer have it(was given to relative), but I did have a wharnie Subcom. Great little big knife, nice grind, easy to open. The wharnie blade shape is easy to sharpen, and has a wicked tip.
Only problem I had with mine was the lock. I really don't know why, but I just mistrust liner lock, and varients of such. The framelock on the Subcom is much better then most liner locks, but I can not put away this pet peeve of mine. :-(
Lock up was great, though, particularly for a inexpensive knife.
hey thanks for the quick reply, i'm thinking i'll get a subcom and if i don't like it, it will become a gift and i'll get myself a lava! :-P thanks again.
hey man, mini follow-up: i should've mentioned that i'm 6'6" and have gigantic hands! i got my hands on a lava and a wharcom and i'll readily concede that the lava is a more substantial and better made knife, but i just can't get a good solid grip on it for the life of me, and my fingers are too long to hold it securely in a forward grip. the chunky and thicker handle of the wharcom stays put though, and you weren't kidding about the tip on this thing!
lol small ass knife but wouldent do any good if ur beein robed at gun point

the lava was designed by some hawaiin dude who mae it as a self defense knife for people who know how to use small blades. (trained fighters)

Excellent vid bro.
Love the Lava. I frequent the Spyderco forums and am a regular poster over there. Good stuff. Keep it up.

Ergo wise, compared to the Lava, the Subcom feels a bit blockish in hand. Not bad, or anything, the Lava just has incredible ergos.
If you have the money, go for the Lava, but the Subcom is an excellent knife, and will feel that small SD pretty well.

It's great that you got to handle them! Photos and even videos can be a bit deceiving. ;-)
I kinda miss my Wharcom.... I should really buy another.
LordSpyderco 3 years ago
Definitely not for everyone, it fills a very specific niche. I carry mine clipped to my front pocket, with a larger folder running back up IWB.
Do you have a min Dejavoo? Seems like a great bargain, but I'm very picky about my liner locks.....
LordSpyderco 3 years ago
Also, I'm diggin' the new Spydie box. ;-)
LordSpyderco 3 years ago
I don't have mini dejavoo but i'm looking for a small folder. Liner lock on Millie rocks:)

Finally a new video:)
I like this small folder, but it's just too expensive, i would go for mini dejavoo or something.
