Quick questions: My 50th Anniversary Edition has a plain red cover, but the dust jacket is black with the Sauron emblem. Do you know what press it might be? The publishing date is 2004. And what's the significance of the one with the black leather cover, with gold foil at the edges? I'd like to get all three but I need to know what I'm looking for. Thank you.
I am really jealous of these. My copies are falling apart, they're so bad I'm afraid to so much as breath in them for fear of them crumbling in my hands.
Wow. It's unfortunate that the American 50th Anniversary edition doesn't quite match the deluxe editions of the rest of the books. While I'm certainly happy with my editions (I own the 1974 red-leatherette edition and the American 50th Anniversary edition), particularly the leather binding and gilded edges of the latest, I would love for my Tolkien library to match like yours does.
My 50th anneversary edition arrived today. But it's the Houghton Mifflin version, it looks really great. It's the most beatifull book i have ever seen.
@Th3D4nny I also have the Houghton Mifflin version, and I love it. I placed an order for the collection in this video because I've been searching for some nice matching versions of The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and The Children of Hurin.
I live in the US and had to go through 2 connections to order these books. It was well worth the wait, and purchased them before they went up in price. Thank you for these videos.
The cover is just beautiful, and I love how it matches. I'm most definitely going to buy them, though separately. Works out to a fair bit less in terms of cost, and the only real thing I give up is the slip case for all 4. Comes with each individually, which is nice.

I bought LOTR dx separately because I didn't know whether I would like it (both book and this edition), so no point in buying this, but now I regret it. The Hobbit dx, normally standing at 42£ at amazon.co.uk, has been gone for many months now, and I fear it will stay that way. Only option is to buy this set, but it's 200£, and I already have LOTR. The most saddening thing is, that in January when I bought LOTR, this set was, at tolkien.co.uk, only at 120£. DAMN!
I have a very similar 50th anniversary edition of 'The Lord of the Rings'. What I did dislike were actually 2 things: 1) brilliant white of paper, 2) "boring" font used for the book. They are such simple aspects to take into account and the publishers missed them even in a special edition! I mean Tolkien's works look the way Maugham's or Dickens's or Shakespeare's might well have done.
Oh, boy, how I wish these...

You can tell that the least favorite book in the series is the Silmarillion.

The books seem to be bound really tight, is that disturbing during the first read through them?
They'll probably loosen up quite a bit after extensive use though.

@jemimus hi there ! would you recommend me a harper collins edition for the hobbit?
the hardcover deluxe,
maybe the 70th anniversary,
the pack with annotations, a review of the first version?
this time around i'm reading it directly from english to avoid strange translations, so... give a hint mate !

I just ordered the Silmarillion. Already got the special editions of the Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit. So I'm very excited. Great review :).

I wish they would release the book that Bilbo, Frodo and Sam wrote.
So just the Hobbit and the lord of the rings in the same font with all the illustrations I would love that :0

abiss86 1 year ago
@abiss86 Then might I suggest this one: The Lord of the Rings - illustrated hardback
By J. R. R. Tolkien (google it)
It has illustrations by Alan Lee, longtime Tolkien illustrator, who also did a lot of the conceptual design on the movies together with John How
