Guys, while it appears cool, they actually don't race. Cleared train movements are restricted by the designated speed on the particular track. Plus you have to take into account the train's type and horsepower of locomotives, type of load carried, load weight, etc. So it's often a coincidence that one train may catch up and pass another.

I saw this once in Rochelle, IL on the UP Geneva Sub: A UP Coal drag and a 1 unit train with 4 boxcars, both were EB, though. 5/5! Great video!!

This actually happens with some regularity, they run faster light trains around coal drags all the time, that's a benefit of 2 main tracks in CTC territory, it happens on the hill a few times a year, usually it's Amtrak running around something on the hill eastbound.

I have seen that done before in Fostoria OH on the NS, I also do that on my layout all the time, I have videos of it on my channel, standing on the platform would have truely been exciting and as long as they don't derail you would have been good.
