Maynard will be the first to tell all of you that he's nothing without his band. Even if he picks his bandmates well... His bandmates have to be just as awesome or you'd notice a lacking here and there in every single song.
The thing that attracted me to Tool in the first place was that they sounded nothing like any other band I had ever listened to. It really isn't just Maynard. The first time I heard the riff to Stinkfist, I was blown away. Listen to the second solo in Lateralus. WHAT?! That's not music. That's breaking through to another level of being. And then it follows with "with my feet upon the ground"...man. What a band.
@IcemanR46 I agree. Just the passion in the way Tool plays is so incredible. It IS music. It's how music ought to be. I also wouldn't go to say they're 'weird' like many have said. It's just GOOD MUSIC, not strange except at first hearing. Once you analyze it you realize it's just really intelligent. Lateralus is one of my favorite songs musically by Tool and definitely my favorite lyrically.

Maynard lived with Billy for a while and Billy showed Maynard his music, in which Maynard stated that he could see himself singing all of the songs. Billy let him try the songs out regardless of him wanting a female singer, and ended up opting in Maynard.
why can't Maynard be ,Maynard and you be you . why does this society have to base labels of lead singer as the entire voice of a band? @gueeb It's because Maynard writes most of it all. The other guys have some input but, like in A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, Maynard is the leader. It's like how Cliff Burton was with Metallica.

@gueeb Most of the fans of Maynard (myself included) tend to get caught up with him when talking about tool and APC because we listen to his amazing solo work. Where in he is still absolutely amazing and genius. I give SO MUCH credit to the bands. For example tool would not be tool without its amazing bass. APC without its guitar. All that being said I can't say I have ever tore into someone for not naming everyone in the band when talking about what they enjoyed in a song.

The thing that attracted me to Tool in the first place was that they sounded nothing like any other band I had ever listened to. It really isn't just Maynard. The first time I heard the riff to Stinkfist, I was blown away. Listen to the second solo in Lateralus. WHAT?! That's not music. That's breaking through to another level of being. And then it follows with "with my feet upon the ground"...man. What a band.

@IcemanR46 I agree. Just the passion in the way Tool plays is so incredible. It IS music. It's how music ought to be. I also wouldn't go to say they're 'weird' like many have said. It's just GOOD MUSIC, not strange except at first hearing. Once you analyze it you realize it's just really intelligent. Lateralus is one of my favorite songs musically by Tool and definitely my favorite lyrically.

so all of you are wrong maynard writes the lyrics in tool and a perfect circle, while howerdel writes the actual music. so if its the lyrics you like its maynard and if its the music its howerdel. which if thats how you think youre dumb because lyrics have to taken with the music and music with the lyrics.

@benderhambone Nope, Howerdel does the lyrics for APC apart from the songs about Maynard's mother. Maynard lived with Billy for a while and Billy showed Maynard his music, in which Maynard stated that he could see himself singing all of the songs. Billy let him try the songs out regardless of him wanting a female singer, and ended up opting in Maynard.

why can't Maynard be ,Maynard and you be you . why does this society have to base labels of lead singer as the entire voice of a band? Doesn't every person from that band have a personal part of what they're creating as a band instead of what reflected off of a lead singer? I didn't expect a lead singer to be an entire voice of a cooperative group who, each have a say so as a whole. don't forget Adam Jones, Justin Chancellor, or Danny Carry

And again, in A Perfect Circle, Howerdel does nearly all the writing.

I was unaware that he wrote this song and I will believe you that he did, but unless someone proves me wrong, I'll keep believing that there's a big chunk of their lyrics he didn't write. I'm of the suspiscion that they write most things together and in select cases a peice is written by one member. I think Maynard writes more for APC, which has conflicting lyrics with Tool

@gueeb Most of the fans of Maynard (myself included) tend to get caught up with him when talking about tool and APC because we listen to his amazing solo work. Where in he is still absolutely amazing and genius. I give SO MUCH credit to the bands. For example tool would not be tool without its amazing bass. APC without its guitar. All that being said I can't say I have ever tore into someone for not naming everyone in the band when talking about what they enjoyed in a song.
