What an awesome video. I've watched it over and over and I never get tired of it. Wayne Bergeron, omg. He's a beast. Nothing else to say about him. Stockton Helbing, probably the greatest jazz drummer I have ever heard, save Buddy Rich and a couple of other oldies. Sounds great! And I think that YouTube could use some more Wayne Bergeron videos. I love his playing, and I'm jealous of that tenor sax sound.

Ok, maybe this is creatively bankrupt, but maybe it's keeping alive a strain of music that we all love and deserves to be heard now and in the future. alright so ive searched, in vain for scores to maynard songs like this one, including conquistador, i wanna be like you and others, and i cant seem to find them could someone help me find them (i want them including maynards solos) thank you
@byrdrox12 Are you just Google searching? The crap often blocks the good stuff when you do a blind search. JW Pepper has 42 songs listed under Maynard Ferguson. I haven't done any of the "peeking" they sometimes allow, but surely you can find something to start from there. A solo is supposed to be an improvisation, although Maynard did them the same most of the time. You may or may not be able to find his solos in the sheet music. You could also try Sheet Music Plus and other sites.
I can tell you how to get this one. If you have a program like finale that is. Search for this song in midi form. Import it into finale and the score and all parts will be available for you. Enjoy.
@pooperscoopr69 This band, as well as the arrangement, was the Rock 'n Roll of big band jazz. Rock 'n Roll, as i'm sure you may be aware of, was also flat and devoid of any polish. @andrewoc15 Those are the notes that Wayne is playing. The trumpet is in the key of Bb so a B on a trumpet is actually an A on a piano/keyboard which is in the key of C.

Wayne Bergeron is the bomb and sounds great on this awesome video. He also sounds great in Horn Section with Andy Martin/trombone and John Rekevics/sax-flute on jazz vocal collection of love songs (October 26 2010 release by Sketchin' Records) "The Glory of love" Rob Keiter.
Wayne is such an awesome player. His upper register is just as full as any other notes he plays. I won't make comparisons between him and Maynard though, because both are great in their own ways. Maynard is a legend, and Wayne will no doubt be remembered as one as well. RIP Maynard
No comparison to Maynard. He just doesn't scream like Maynard or convey the excitement in the upper register like Maynard did. Calling Wayne the next Maynard is like calling Michael Buble the next Frank Sinatra. Sorry.

He noticed my geeky trumpet-ish name and we ended up chatting for a bit about Maynard and Wayne and whatnot. And as for Wayne, I love his lead sound. When you watch him you can tell playing those high notes is a lot of work, but it SOUNDS so easy, and lets him sound so musical even up in the stratosphere. :D
Just saw Wayne at Yorba Linda california playing with some middle school and high school bands, wow. He was amazing! His solos blew me away and his high notes were unparalleled!
He'll be in Sherman, Texas in a little under 2 months to do a Maynard Tribute concert with UNT's 1 O'Clock Lab Band on Maynard's birthday at the new museum that's dedicated to Maynard.
as much as a shallow mouthpiece may help one, it isn't the only one. you could just do breathing exercises and embouchure workouts and get good that way.
Ok, actually you played better in spots than MF, the band played tighter and slightly better. That trombone solo was better than anything I ever heard from the other brass in MF's bands, and I liked the sax a lot better (sorry but I hated the flute and sax solos from MF).
The cool thing is, though, I could hear every note from Maynard's old score, plus a little extra in the band and in some of the improvs. Bravo!!!
@Baritone45 :" That trombone solo was better than anything I ever heard from the other brass in MF's bands..." Then you really need to listen to some of the MF bands of the early to mid-'60s. Slide Hampton, who also composed and arranged for Maynard, for example...
@olbuksings Thanks for the tip. I'll look it up. I've seen a couple of 60s vids of MF on here playing like Maria and something else Spanish. Loved it, as it was closer to classical jazz and less tightly produced (meaning no improv on solos, etc) than his 70s bands that I knew/know. Not to mention it wasn't influenced by disco and trying to get on the radio like his 70s stuff was.
@Baritone45 Wonder if the "something else Spanish" might've been "Ole" from the "Maynard '61" album? I have an original vinyl LP of that one on the Roulette label but it was re-issued on CD in 1990.
You've duplicated Maynard's efforts from the 70s TO A TEE. Now can you be more than a tribute band and make new music? I'll look to see what you have out there.
dude, I'm not even a trumpet player. I play sax and clarinet i dont think i can play that high on either. my friends and i are learning this at a lower octave
Those 3 are some of the best MF tribute players alive, I'll grant you that. WB's big band and commercial lead playing is very musical and stands above the others bigtime IMHO. But have you forgotten about all the other aspects of music? Hmm, what about Allen Vizzutti.. Sergei Nakarjakov.. Tim Morrison.. Carl Saunders.. and the list goes on and on. Expand your trumpet horizons friend. Wayne is a monster, but would his Telemann Air in D make my eyes misty like Andre's I wonder?
yes he is, i am aware. He currently plays on a horn from yamaha, but he played on a kanstul before yamaha. and im assuming he is playing his kanstul in this video
Just beautiful.... Just wish Wayne would've been able to hold the lt note longer...lol you can tell he's tired at the end... but I would be too... Go Wayne!!!!!

@olbuksings That doesn't ring a bell. I'll look it up one of these days. Sounds like you have some real vintage records. Happy New Year everybody!

Excellent job, Wayne and band!
You've duplicated Maynard's efforts from the 70s TO A TEE. Now can you be more than a tribute band and make new music? I'll look to see what you have out there.
