Did you notice that in the earlier Family Sketches Mama acts MORE like she does in the later syndicated episodes of Mama's Family? In the early Family Sketches she talks much higher, and is a little funnier and wittier like she is in the syndicated episodes of Mama's Family. But in the later Family Sketches and in the NBC episodes of Mama's Family she's more just bitter and hateful and seems pretty emotionless and talks MUCH lower.

Like when Mama said "Quit singing the Starspangle banner and get to the point!" That was just like something the syndicated Mama would have said. The Mama from the later Family Sketches and the NBC Mama's Family didn't have many witty lines.

Vicki's "Mama" voice is a bit different than it is in later episodes, her accent's not as strong. It often takes time for an actor to grow into a character, and it's neat to see how she evolved Thelma over the years.

jpwarner- I know that but on the episode of ILove Lucy where Ricky takes Lucy across his knee and SPANKS her, most everyone got all offended about that, and that was just a sitcome! There were about 12 posts on the I Love Lucy message board on the IMDB about THAT spanking incidence! So sitcomes CAN offend people.

Have you seen Absolutely Fabulous? Eunice doesn't have anything on Jennifer Saunder's character (Edina Monsoon). Unpolitically correct, my fave.

Well, Mama is a sour old B****. It's true that Eunice blasts her, but Mama is always getting in her digs at Eunice, who can never do anything right. I saw the same thing with my mother and HER mother and sister: her sister could do no wrong; my mother could do no right, and her mother was constantly sniping at her. No wonder Eunice blows her top. But I think that makes it realistic: a LOT of daughters feel constantly criticized by their mothers. That's why it struck a chord with audiences.
