well it is clear that he wasnt tied off there is two straps on the rig i worked on a fall assist on top of your harness and then a hip strap that went from your back to the rails of the derrik, 1 month before i started , the derrik man fell to his death, and his brother was working the floor,he reached to grab the pipe, and wasnt tied off ,, jumped on the pipe but in south florida heat the pipe was so hot he couldnt hang on sad sad,we were drilling deep inj. wells in west palm bch. fl.

He was very lucky and has quick response to be able to grab onto the elevators the instant he realized that he had no line holding him back. A fellow just died on my rig from the very same thing. Not pretty. Now we have the poliy of the derrickman using 2 lines - the traditional positioning tie-back line and an inertia reel cable on the D-ring between shoulder blades.
that's so scary. My boss told me that happened to him before, but he grabbed a hold of the pipe and slid down it to the floor. both of these guys are lucky. what happened in the rest of the vid? how did he get off?

No he wasn't hooked into his lanyard. What you saw was the strap he uses to pull the shafts back and forth between the elevators and the rack
