In our State House, there is a cannon that dates back to the US Civil War. The cannon was part of a battery at Gettysburg. The crew was killed when a shell happened to hit the mouth of the cannon, just as they were about to ram a cannon ball down the bore. The ball was lodged in the mouth by the impact, rendering the cannon useless.
It sat on exhibit in the State House foyer for over 100 years, before someone realized that the cannon still had a live powder charge in it.
Someone must have thought: that was a big thunderflash...
