@HanoverFist247 It is in the correct order, You get that quest right from the begining. Oblivion is one of the easiest game out there, so is this one. In fact its way to easy, these days they almost hold your hands all the way through. Ill give you a advise, never play Dark Souls.

I never said anything about hard. Not sure how you got that. Oblivion was way too slow and boring. I like to get in the action. Not roam around and loook for shit. Skyrim is a good game much better than Oblivion, but once again it turtles too often. Dark Souls looked boring too. Rpgs tend to be long drawn out quest lines much long run on sentences lol.

@HanoverFist247 let me know if you think there is a better RPG swords and sorcerer style available for the PS3. I realize that most good ones are on the PC. The great things about this game are the UI, the sound track, the smoothness (unfortunately the graphics seem to suffer) the dragons paarthanux if you dont like him something is wrong with you. all these people finishing it on default difficulty crack me up.self leveling dungeons are annoying.

Everyone, please thumbs this up, this is a helpful comment, for pc users only though sadly. If you are like me, a warrior with no magicka skill whatsoever, it's sort of cheating, but go to the iron door leading to the excavation, open the console with the "~" key and click the lock on the door, then type "unlock" and enter. I'd recommend saving before going in etc. because it may be buggy from not finishing the mages quest. But if you want to get in without mage questing, do as I say.
@lickmetender That's impossible, unless you only mean the main quest. This game has around 200 hours worth of gameplay and that is excluding traveling, exploring, killing dragons, figuring out puzzles, finding ways around glitched quests, etc.
@lickmetender It sucks to have to discover a place before you can fasttravel towards it, but wanse you have the "explorer" achievement (discover 100 places), you never need to walk for more then 2 minutes. You kinda need to see "exploring" as a skill on its own.
BTW,
The Companions, The Dark Brotherhood, The Imperial Legion/Stormcloacks and The ThievesGuild are very variant quest-series and all of them are by themselfs as lengthy as the "main" story, its very, very open world-isch
@wybo2 im about half way through making my own guild type thing with the creation kit it is very FOOKING hard to do and is pissing me off trying to get it to work properly but when it is done it should be good. the guild is a secret orginization that hunts mages kinda like the templars but not as well equipped.

Can someone help? I tried doing the First lessons quest but when it tells me to listen to Talfdir he says nothing and i don't know what to do. Can someone tell me what you have to do to complete the quest?
@GameShampoo Had the same problem. My solution was to shoot fireballs at him until he attacked me. I then ran out of the arcaneum and into Winterhold (every one at the College was blasting me with magic.) I then did another quest and came back to this one and it "completed". I'm now at Saarthal (which is the successor quest) and there's no one here....
@SEANM4444 1. Download "BSAunpack" file 2. double click on it 3. press Open 4. Search for a file Skyrim - Voices Extra which is located in ...\The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim\Data 5.click on it 6. FIRST press "Extract" only then "Extract all" 7. it creates a Sound Folder 8. Close program 9. put that Sound Folder into ...\The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim\Data 10. replace it (if u already have Sound Folder) 11. Have Fun This Will also help with a problem with Dumb Esbern.

@TheNorrie1000 level up. it takes two levels to get enough maicj. AND you dont need to cast a spell. you can use an enchanted weapon or staff. you can use a scroll or you can use a the fear Shout if you have it unlocked. none of the guilds are "free" to join. you have to be able to sneak and pick a lock a little bit to join theives.
@HardWarUK no one is FORCING you to join any of the guilds what so ever. I do not know why you think that. There are TONS of quest specific spots, spells, items, and dungeons. and YES the same is true for oblivion. I beat that game twice 100%. There were plenty of places, or chests, etc, in both games that you could not access if if you were not on that quest, whether is was a main quest a certian guild quest or a side quest is irrelevant. nothing has changed, and no one is forcing you to join
@atamagomu I don't think he is complaining that you can't enter the tomb without joining the guild. I believe he is complaining that there is another quest which directs you to saarthal to finish it. I had this problem too. The quest requires you to go to three tombs to acquire three amulet fragments. I ended up heading to saarthal last only to find it was locked and required a key. It turns out if I want to finish this quest (without cheating) I have to do another quest. Which IS stupid.
Finally! I went through fucking hell and back to look for that bastard key! And all it takes to get into that place is to join the Mage's Guild. Fuck you Skyrim!

Glad I found this video, I spent 30 minutes looking for the damn key... If you're lucky, and playing on a PC, you can back up a bit, hit the "~" to bring up the console, target the door with your cursor (click on it) and type "unlock" (with out the "") and hit enter and it will unlock the door for you to continue. For the console gamers, you'll have to follow the video.
What a ridiculous block to other quests associated with this site, I'm in the middle of the Forbidden Legend quest and haven't even went to the mages college yet, on this character.
or just open the console, click the door and type unlock. Skyrim can go screw itself if it thinks I'm gonna join the mages guild with my thief character.
Whoever made it mandatory to join the Guild to be able to unlock the fucking door is probably the same asshole who made vampire disease so tedious to cure.
@hallorand9 i agree with you! i entered this the near this saarthal, cleaned 3 caves where i fought spider mechanics and other crap killed the khajiit brothers (sad :() killed the huge colossus or whatever his name was, killed two people alive to hope and find a key! but nothing -_- spend 2 hours in those 3 caves.

Not going to lie, it's pretty dumb.. but the mages guild is pretty useful. You get a room from it which you can store your stuff if you want to save your money, or too poor or whatever it maybe. and you just have to do the first 5 minutes of the quest.. I'm a warrior. it won't kill you to do it.

Totally agree, Bethesda fu**** up on this one... I am an archer/rogue Nord so I didn't expect nor wanted to join the Mages Guild (which I hate) anytime soon or ever, but after fucking 2 hours doing this stupid quest I end up in front of a locked door which you have to join the Mages Guild to get the key... seriously wtf guys? definitely the worst ES quest of all time, no doubt, very disappointed right now.
This is the most awful quest in any Elder Scrolls games I have played. Firsly it's totally glitched, so if you have entered any of the tombs prior to the quest the tomb doesn't reset, like Gaulderurson Hall. Then, even if you are a warrior or thief character and after playing this quest for 2-3 hours, you find you have to join the Mages Guild to complete it! Well, I play a Thief, and my character would never go anywhere near the Mages Guild. It would be the same if I was a warrior!

@Dryzenkov BUT if you find the Lost Legends book and that starts the quest to go to the first location, and that takes you to a second location, how are you supposed to know what the end of the quest is going to need? You're implying that all side quests should be checked in a strategy guide first,. so you know the end of them before you even take them! What a fun RPG that would be!
@HardWarUK the idea is that you should join all the guilds. I am an assasin my self, but have still joined all the guilds. to get 100% achievement you have to finish all four guilds regardless. you don't have to use magic to complete these quests. if anything people should be complaining about thieves guild becuase you HAVE to be a thief to complete those.
@atamagomu I should be able to join any Guild I want, or not, I should not be forced to as part of a quest. No other quest in Morrowind or Oblivion did that! As I thief I can CHOOSE to join any guild I want, although I may not have the prerequisites, but that's very different from being forced to!

I had this problem too. The quest requires you to go to three tombs to acquire three amulet fragments. I ended up heading to saarthal last only to find it was locked and required a key. It turns out if I want to finish this quest (without cheating) I have to do another quest. Which IS stupid.

Glad I found this video, I spent 30 minutes looking for the damn key... If you're lucky, and playing on a PC, you can back up a bit, hit the "~" to bring up the console, target the door with your cursor (click on it) and type "unlock" (with out the "") and hit enter and it will unlock the door for you to continue. For the console gamers, you'll have to follow the video.

@hallorand9 i agree with you! i entered this the near this saarthal, cleaned 3 caves where i fought spider mechanics and other crap killed the khajiit brothers (sad :() killed the huge colossus or whatever his name was, killed two people alive to hope and find a key! but nothing -_- spend 2 hours in those 3 caves.

Not going to lie, it's pretty dumb.. but the mages guild is pretty useful. You get a room from it which you can store your stuff if you want to save your money, or too poor or whatever it maybe. and you just have to do the first 5 minutes of the quest.. I'm a warrior. it won't kill you to do it.

You people need to stop bitching and moaning. Skyrim is a terrific game despite what your opinion may be. I can't believe how pathetic some of you are, whining that finally there is a quest that ISN'T straight forward like 95% of the quests in the game, and takes time and exploring to solve. Those who complain evidently need to stick to basic rpg's such as runescape or something where the quests are for the simple-minded. Nothing wrong with the mages guild either, I find all guilds awesome.

Totally agree, Bethesda fu**** up on this one... I am an archer/rogue Nord so I didn't expect nor wanted to join the Mages Guild (which I hate) anytime soon or ever, but after fucking 2 hours doing this stupid quest I end up in front of a locked door which you have to join the Mages Guild to get the key... seriously wtf guys? definitely the worst ES quest of all time, no doubt, very disappointed right now.

This is the most awful quest in any Elder Scrolls games I have played. Firsly it's totally glitched, so if you have entered any of the tombs prior to the quest the tomb doesn't reset, like Gaulderurson Hall. Then, even if you are a warrior or thief character and after playing this quest for 2-3 hours, you find you have to join the Mages Guild to complete it! Well, I play a Thief, and my character would never go anywhere near the Mages Guild. It would be the same if I was a warrior!

@Dryzenkov BUT if you find the Lost Legends book and that starts the quest to go to the first location, and that takes you to a second location, how are you supposed to know what the end of the quest is going to need? You're implying that all side quests should be checked in a strategy guide first,. so you know the end of them before you even take them! What a fun RPG that would be!

@HardWarUK the idea is that you should join all the guilds. I am an assasin my self, but have still joined all the guilds. to get 100% achievement you have to finish all four guilds regardless. you don't have to use magic to complete these quests. if anything people should be complaining about thieves guild becuase you HAVE to be a thief to complete those.

@atamagomu I should be able to join any Guild I want, or not, I should not be forced to as part of a quest. No other quest in Morrowind or Oblivion did that! As I thief I can CHOOSE to join any guild I want, although I may not have the prerequisites, but that's very different from being forced to!
