actually what earns you the oscar is your whole performance in the movie. Don't get me wrong I used to think the same way you do, I saw the nominees and thought they were just being nominated for the scene they showed after saying their names, but they show that because it was probably the scene where the actor/actress was at his/her best in the movie.
