in reality the ship was the ''Christian Raditsch'', a Norwegian Training ship from Oslo, It visited Douglas ,Isle of Manabout 1981/2, myself and some friends rowed out to it when it was at anchor, looking through the portholes we could see that the original oil lamps had been converted to electricity ,still very authentic.I believe she was burnt out several years later sadly.
When I was a kid in Germany...a hundred years ago...the whole family saw these episodes on Saturday eve, ate fish with potatoes and drunk hot bläck tea with a little bit of run ...my father with a little bit more run.
I've never seen The Onedin Line. But what a beuatiful adaptation of composer Aram Khachaturian's work.
I believe The Onedin Line was on the BBC. I live in the U.S., so missed it. Maybe I'll buy the DVDs if they come out in NTSC format. Thanks for uploading this.
KHACHATRIAM!!!! KHACHATURIAM!!!!!!!
Shiver me timbers and splice the mainbrace. This tune lifts and falls like the ship which is the central character. I agree that Khatchaturian must have been inspired by the sea to compose a melody that is so like the rolling seaway. I should know, I spant many years on it at it's kindest and at it's worst. I learnt very early that if one plays games with the sea, the sea will play along, but if you want to fight it, it will always win. A lovely posting, thanks.
This is NOT the original theme from this series. The original theme was conducted by Khachaturian himself in 1963. This is not the theme that accompanied the opening credits.
Used in every movie involving sand. Oh hang on that's bollocks.. They didn't us it in The Mummy. Foget everything I've just typed here.. Why am I still typing?
I like the prominence this version gives to the oboe but the harp is way overboard! Lots of the Khachaturian gets chopped out but what's left makes for a great tune. Just hearing it takes me back to my childhood in the 70s.
Emocionante volver a ver estas imágenes y esta música después de 20 años ... casi la olvidé hasta que por pura casualidad la volví a escuchar esta melodía en la era de hielo 2
LOVED this show and I'm not sure why. Me and my mother watched it together when I was but a lad. Loved the wealth rivalry between Anne Stallybrass and Jessica Benton.
Blimey, this brings back memories! My Mum used to love watching this in the 70s! I remember that it used to clash with The Incredible Hulk on ITV, which was my favourite TV programme and it used to give me the right hump! This was in the days before video recorders or Sky+. We even had a black and White TV because my parents couldn't afford the colour TV licence! @karenbenn - I'm English as well, as you can probably tell by my 'proper' spelling of English!
My whole family enjoyed the time watching The Onedin Lines. It was broadcasted in my city (Toluca, Mexico)on Sunday evenings by the regional state channel in the 80's. It won gradually a big audience .because of its good qualities.
beautiful music, brings back so many memories. Have recently been watching the series but the videos were suddenly removed - is anyone able to help please???
I remember this, although I was ....about... 6 years old. It meant our tuesday evenings...started at 8 p.m. My parents liked it very much, but I though bored sometimes. There were some adventures (e.g. jungle) and the great music, yup.
But for me this whole piece, with the cor anglais or whatever the solo instrument is toward the start, isn't anywhere near as uplifting as the later loud trebly string bit that began the BBC intro version.
love this tune, was just a little kid when me mum and dad used to watch this on bbc1 on a sunday night. Like the tune even more after not hearing it for years. It moves me inside ! Amazing !
The MERE idea of using that Adagio from Spartacus theme for the Onedin Line plus giving the audiences a customized, fuller lush Hollywood-like orchestration deserves already an Oscar. The TV orchestration is even better than the original. It was the spineshiverer of our childhoods. Gooooorgeous!!
Once again, here are the people behind the camera who have great talent and know exactly what to give the audience to produce the emotions that set the scene for their writer's intent. How many times has great music been introduced to us through the best of British TV?
