This is priceless. The bald, bearded guy seated with the anti-Bible people, while agreeing with the Christians, is too damn smart for the nutjobs he's supporting. They don't get that he agrees with them so they start arguing against him. Fuck me, how stupid are these people?
It's almost painful how much I agree Dawkins. Why does the bible need to dictate or even suggest what is morally correct? Indeed the bible may contain moral messages that align with many peoples' personal beliefs, but if we can recognise and debate that then why rely on scriptures as a source of morality? Why not allow us as humans to determine our own moral code and, rather than childishly depending on scriptures, give ourselves credit for our own society?
@dragontype123 Exactly. Christians seem to think that it's the one and only way that we could be moral. But the classic Atheist question would be like "Would you kill your daughter for adultery?" Of course not. You'd be upset. I'd be upset now but I wouldn't kill her or disown her and I didn't need the Bible to teach me that. I mean hell if the Bible said to kill your dog for urinating in your house, I would of killed many dogs. But of course I wouldn't, but some Christians may.
@g0dofthegaps you'll find if you bother to read the Holy Babble that our Lord's name was not Jezzus, as you so blasphemously write - his name was Jeebus Crust and he is the son of Gosh and part of the Holy 3-Some. Jeebus was born to Bloody Mary, a virgin, by a miracle of the Spirit of Truthiness. The Holy Babble gives an account of an angel visiting Bloody Mary to tell her that she was chosen to bare the Son of Gosh.
Lez Henry is the man. That's how you approach all the details. Not just the stories but the psychological and personal intentions of how people approach these subjects. Lez has spoken the ultimate truth here. Rock on, good sir.
Man is agressively fulfilling the falling away (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4). All the individuals in this clip have a choice and hopefully they will make the right one. Those of you who don't want the word of Yah here is some relief. Revelation 22:11-He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: & he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: & he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: & he that is holy, let him be holy still. So u can throw away or even burn your bible but judgment is coming.
@redbreast3 Yahshua gave graphic description of future events prior to the initial judgment to the disciples shortly before his death. Read Matthew 24:3-31 and Jude 1:14-21. People in the world are rapidly achieving the acts outlined within these scriptures. This is how I know judgment is coming. Shalom!
Where would we be without the 10 commandents? What do you think non religious societies do? Do the Japanese or Thai or the Nepalese (which are a largely non biblical societies) go around killing each other all day? Don't you think they know what's right or wrong without having to read 2000 year old books written by ignorant Jewish tribes?
I can't believe that anyone can argue for the case that the bible is needed in order to establish morality. As Dawkins so rightly put it, the very means by which we can cherry pick the good bits from the bad as a society is an indication of a common morality that has evolved IN SPITE of the bible. As far as I'm concerned, that puts an end to the debate.
The Middle Ages was the most Christian era ever. It was also full of wars, rape, enslavement and a huge step backward compared to Roman times. There is nothing more moral in Christianity than in rationality.
The fact that you have to cherry pick is in itself evidence that our morality is our own, we recognise the horrible parts. Even if our morality has roots in christianity that would make it the manure that our fruits (virtues) have grown from
"the moral criterium of which we've become decent people, has come from the Bible." Man … what a bloody narrow worldview. But seriously? No other civilization in history has ever been ‘decent’ before they were converted?
"The moral criteria which we've became decent people comes from the bible" Speak for yourself bishop.
I'm as many Asians are, raised by on Eastern philosophy like Confucianism, Taosism, Buddhism etc. Which knowledge and wisdom as many other religions often supersedes your fairytale book. Such arrogance to think the bible is the only moral compass in the world.
"I said why deal with the Bible as a moral text" tbf Prof. D - you didn't - might have been what you MEANT but here is the inherent problem with debates like this - people let their enthusiasm get the better of them and say something meaning something else. The people who appear on these programs really need to be more careful and follow the old saying of "say what you mean and mean what you say"
TV debates on theology; An atheist for taking dogma apart, a bishop for sticking to dogma, an academic for academic arguements and a rabbi for light relief. This is begining to sound like a formula.
This is just great. Christians looking stupid, and nonechristians destroying them. Not at the level I'd like to see (hitchens), but certainly is making them come up with silly reasons to justify themselves
@iliveon really? so its sill to say that western culture is based on judeo-christian values? Its silly to say that even the humanists principles that guys like dawkins like to thump over the bible actually have judeo christian origins in the forms of catholic humanists like Erasmus and thomas more? I'll flip this around to the atheists, why do you people assume that because religious people hold a text to be divine that we dont hold other things in life as morally admirable as well?
And no, I don't believe not murdering and not stealing is from judaeo principles
I think these existed before. When you have a civilization that can write, you have understood morals like not killing, etc. Its more like common sense. Even a dog will know if peeing on the carpet is wrong. Being that people react to that type of thing. Everyone would react if something was stolen. Also, I understand that America is based more on this religion than others, but
@jamaicanification but, I will contend that no one on earth except maybe the Amish, actually abide by these so called principles. And even they kill each other, and steal, etc. Its called human nature and since we are social species that need to work with one another, these things are more like common sense. Even to cave men
she backs up her point "don't have other gods, means we as humans are not the center of everything" *clueless audience claps*
a bit ironic, when religion ascribes cosmic significance to humans in the first place by assuming that their imaginary god cares about one species on one planet more than anything else
Dawkins wrote such a good chapter about the evolutionary origin of a moral sense in "the god delusion". Why doesn't he just quote some of the studies and ask the question wheter someone who has never heard of the bible therefore has no morals? Come on Richard, those Idiots don't play in your league.
Solon the Athenian 594 B.C.E: 1. Trust good character more than promises. 2. Do not speak falsely. 3. Do good things. 4. Do not be hasty in making friends, but do not abandon them once made. 5. Learn to obey before you command. 6. When giving advice, do not recommend what is most pleasing, but what is most useful. 7. Make reason your supreme commander. 8. Do not associate with people who do bad things. 9. Honor the gods. 10. Have regard for your parents. Your 10 commandments of Moses are trash
It's funny how Religious people believe so heavily on God loving us and act like this world was made specifically for us when it is indeed evident, and I mean evident to it's highest degree since I can't necessarily say fact, that our species or any other are the results of an inevitability. (may have spelled that wrong)
If we can take all the information obtained by science and put it into the bible, take out all the non-factual things in the bible and use the bible as a main source of knowledge and understanding I would be all for that. But as the bible stands, it is nothing more than a book of ancient fairytale which deserves no elevated status over any other literature.
Human beings wrote the bible, therefore everything in the bible came from human minds, therefore human moral values could not possibly have come from the bible.
@agronoxdt If you analyse human behaviour, especially world leaders, you will notice that they love wealth, power and fame and try to get as much as they can and ideologies (that are definitely from human minds) such as capitalism are an example hoarding wealth (in a nut shell). Wheras in many religions, but especially in the Islam it is a pillar of faith to pay zakah which is 2.5% of excess wealth that is given to poor muslims (its a lot more complex than that -e.g what defines a poor person?).
@agronoxdt But the point is that it goes against human desires and materialism which is why many people have a problem with it. So my logic is that how can it be purely invented when it is against greed, indecency, lust lying etc The actions of the church however are a typically the opposite such as hoarding wealth (the vatican) , slavery (a result of arrogance) etc. So you can see where human intervention is in the bible and where it is from the same source (God) such as the quran and vedas etc
Honestly I don't know how Richard's doing it, sitting through this pathetic torture... I can never do this, I'd lose my temper int he first 5 mins... STUPID BISHOP!
the first 3 ´commandments´ of the Ten commandments are the basis of a celestial dictatorship. Religious people just seem to love these, it praises the leader and makes them slaves.
I love how the religious call atheists arrogant, when you have the bishop sitting there behaving like that. I guess that is to be expected though considering they have the belief that they will be going to heaven and all the people who disagree with them will be burning in hell. Well i'm going to get the sun tan lotion and beach volleyball who wants to join me?
The arguments are sadly getting more and more stupider as the show is moving forward. Did he really say that "We don't worship the bible. We worship Jesus"? Ah these people. That is so ridiculous. And then the reverend says "The criterion by which we have become decent people has come from the bible". Ok reverend but what about billions of non-christians? You mean they are not decent people? I wish Dawkins had said that to him, then his face would have been worth watching.
"Where we be without the decalogue?" This bishop is utterly ignorant of sociology and anthropology. Haven't he heard of the Piraha Tribe in the Amazon who hasn't had any of it but still manage to live a morally accepted life.
more i see these debates more i hate these religions. i cant believe they can be stupid of ultimate degree.. they r all farkin old n have all the experience of life, dressed up well n polite but have beliefs of 6 months old child.
If some of the saying in the Bible were time specific and were said for the people of those times, Don't you think that Rev. Martin Luther King's speech "I have a dream" is a speech for all time and could stand till the end of time? In my opinion it is more relevant and worldly than anything in any holy book
These Christian "intellectuals" are like wolves in sheep's clothing - masking themselves as scholars, free-thinkers, debaters, and intelligentsia - all the while hiding their secret : That they believe in fairy tales, stone-age myths and the afterlife. They have to resemble atheists in order to have a voice.

13:51, the woman is speaking her subjective opinion and is directly contradicting the bible. The first commandment meant "Thou shall have no other gods before me". It is clarified in Deutoronomy 13:6 that the penalty for serving other Gods is death. Anyone with basic english can read Exodus 32:26-29 on how Moses interpret this commandment; devotion to YHWH so strong that you are ready to kill your own family for it.
06:29 to anyone who read intellectual history, moral philosophy and the Bible, the statement he makes is so absurd of the highest order that he could as well have spoken about pink elephants eating icecream. People with such lack of insight on the subject of European History wouldn't be in TV unless there was an ignorant culture that put them there.
@comerbp82 You're fucking stupid. I'm not going to waste my time explaining why you're fucking stupid because you're too fucking stupid to understand why you're fucking stupid, you fuckin bigoted fuck.
@GhostSoldier77777 Japanese/Chinese morality is based of the teaching of Confucius, a philosophy based on the logic of humanity. It states that moral imperative in human is the source of the ethical intuitions that guide people, , stressing that morality was infused into society through tradition and training
Shinto has no moral codes. And there certainly isn't a need for "the 10 commandments" as the retarded priest describes.
I am appalled of the arrogance of the christians claiming that all morality of our society comes from the bible. My morality comes from my inner experience of what is right and wrong.
We feel if something is right or wrong, independent of the bible. We can feel a sense of right and wrong around lying, stealing, and killing, but we don't feel that sense of right and wrong about whether or not we are christians or not.
dawkins:) i wont be buying any books reading your tripe, something earlier in this program not showed for obvious reasons, fair enough you said something about uneducated unclassed people in the past, that wrote something that he, had to be told by your lady not in english hebrew:) id chuck shakespeare out and dawkins addios
@AquaBauz well actually scientist now discover that religion is inherent in our nature for our survival. Without it we would not have developed the way we did. So your actually contradicting mainstream science when you say that.........its like saying technology is the bane of development cause some have used it to kill millions in the ark of human history...make no sense
At 14:10, I would have liked for Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou to point out that actually, the commandment about not having other gods was against the polytheistic roots of Judaism, not about humility.
They need a new guy to lead this discussion. He is so badly biased.

The only defence for religion is "morals".
But I argue that morals are innate in us.
Let me explain...
When you watch a pack of lions kill and eat a buffalo, one of the lions has blood on it's fur...
So, what does sister lion do? She cleans the blood off brother lions fur.
Who's ordering the lion to be nice to brother lion?
Two monkeys scratch each others backs...
Where's are they getting this idea from?
The fact is: MORALS ARE INNATE IN US. We have gained them through evolution.

If one says they believe in god, they are either lying, or have a worryingly limited intellect to the point of delusion.
FlawlessLabour 9 months ago

This is why i hate religion. Religion is going to keep our society from developing.

At 4:59 The bald Indian bishop interrupts Dawkins like a petulant, sarcastic child. "Hallelujah." Shut the fuck up.

@JQisAwesome was so childish! i agree . not doing himself any favours

"Where we be without the decalogue?" This bishop is utterly ignorant of sociology and anthropology. Haven't he heard of the Piraha Tribe in the Amazon who hasn't had any of it but still manage to live a morally accepted life.

Dr. Lez Henry is a fucking dumbass. We know how we (humans) go here, we evolved from lower species.

If some of the saying in the Bible were time specific and were said for the people of those times, Don't you think that Rev. Martin Luther King's speech "I have a dream" is a speech for all time and could stand till the end of time? In my opinion it is more relevant and worldly than anything in any holy book

@khayes09 I agree completely.

My morality also came from masturbating apes, so I guess I should hold masturbating apes in preeminence.

how can you claim morality comes from the bible when soceities survived and coexisted centuries before it was ever written

The bible is for once very clear on the subject.
JemyM 9 months ago
06:29 to anyone who read intellectual history, moral philosophy and the Bible, the statement he makes is so absurd of the highest order that he could as well have spoken about pink elephants eating icecream. People with such lack of insight on the subject of European History wouldn't be in TV unless there was an ignorant culture that put them there.

After watching this, I am now convinced that all devote Christians are out of their minds.

GhostSoldier77777 9 months ago
@GhostSoldier77777 Japanese/Chinese morality is based of the teaching of Confucius, a philosophy based on the logic of humanity. It states that moral imperative in human is the source of the ethical intuitions that guide people, , stressing that morality was infused into society through tradition and training
Shinto has no moral codes. And there certainly isn't a need for "the 10 commandments" as the retarded priest describes.
So stfu are say something worth saying

The bald priest gets shit on everytime he opens his mouth. He doesn't have the intellectual capacity to be participating in this debate
