Joan just grows and grows. And with the growing her expression becomes better and never loses its soul. I don't wish to compare, Joan never disappoints. Sure it takes a little adjusting the perfect pitch some are cursed with and therein lies her quality.
I tried speeding it up 3% and the clear, "silvery" quality of her voice came back. I won't swear by the 3% at this point - but until I find something more accurate, I'll go with that!
Nope, this is what the recording sounds like! I think it was recorded right around the time Joan's voice began seriously changing and she was struggling to learn to work with her "new" voice... Personally, I love how her voice sounds in this song and have been guilty in the past of listening to it on repeat :)
Thanks for replying - but I'll stick with my own ears! My 2.5-3% increase in speed (I re-did it with 2.5%) makes it sound like Joan to me, the original speed just has a "down in a tunnel" sound that I do believe is more than the change in her voice.
BTW, 6% change in speed = 1/2 tone. There was a time when many record players played fast by that much.....it always drove me nuts!
I had not heard this before. Something odd about the quality of her voice, which I know very very well - sounds as if possibly it's being played a little slower than recorded. Can you check? I can also download and play with the speed. I used to be able to set the play-speed on a record player (remember them?) dead-accurate, based on the quality of her voice.
Radka Toneff's version is way better!

@norge191
Radka's version is way better if you like baby girl voices with no ability to tell a story or phrase.
Every whispered line by Radka is sung like the one before. No dynamics.
Haven't we had enuff of the million Astrud Gilberto copy cats? Diane Krall is alreay killin us with her ever present mediocrity.

I agree. Although I love Judy Collins' voice and singing, Joan Baez puts more expression into the words and music.

@taddyd1 I totally agree! Even better than Judy's.
