  • Soundgarden and Alice In Chains were already signed to major labels before Nirvana got huge. Actually, those bands' somewhat more modest success (as well as the successful transition of bands like Sonic Youth from indie label to major label), helped pave the way for Nirvana's rise to the top. Nice try though, Henry Rollins.

  • Led Zeppelin fans skip to 6:25

  • not much documentation? husker du! black flag! r.e.m.! minutemen! replacements! meat puppets! flipper! circle jerks! dinosaur jr.! pixies! the list is fucking endless!

  • I hated this song. MTV played it, and played it, and f'n played it again. I love this song!

  • "I like bands like pearl jam" well said. keith richards is also fucking crazy

  • uhhhh smells like teen spirit is a pop song, Mark Walker 95. Quit being a bitch, nirvana was the biggest band in the world at one time. I know that may come as a shock to you. Shit man, even my fucking dad likes Smells Like Teen Spirit.

  • "Smells Like Teen Spirit" WAS a good song. If any other band put out that single, it would have been their most amazing song they'd every put out. But for Nirvana, it wasn't their best, by FAR.

  • Smells like teen spirit is so overrated. when i listen to "live at reading" i feel its a medium nirvana song, By the way it even doesn't sound like a hit, i mean songs like "all alopogies" and "come as you are" could be hits but smells lik teen spirit, good song but ...

  • 08:15

  • 06:27

  • i like what keith richards said

  • @acdcpjsp

    Then fuck you.

  • now that said about Henry....the rest of them are self-serving 80s shitbrains etc......

  • Henry Rollins & Black flag weren't pop pussies......

  • Man I gotta know the name of the documentary that starts at 2:40.

  • 4:08 I WAS THE PARROT IN ALADIN!!

  • Dang what's the name of the documentary that started on 2:40?

  • What's the name of the documentary in which Henry Rollins, Robert Plant, Thurston Moore and the like.

  • If times were simpler...like they were in the 90's..maybe someone else could come along to make all of us shut up about the good ol' days. Bring back art/music/art...

  • What would have happened if Punk was truely US based...rather than Malcom Mclaren based? Did Punk die in '77 or did it just reincarnate itself through the 80's until Nirvana's "breakthrough"?

  • Pete Townshend, pretty well put.

  • Dear Robert Plant, Punk music started in Detroit and New York.

  • WTF????

  • NIRVANAMANIA!!

  • Robert Plant is sO kewl !

  • @z1inspector Agreed

  • Aw that guy from the Rolling Stones likes Pearl Jam :D haha awesome. Keith Richards is a douche though, have some fucking compassion you old fuck

  • I'm not one of those Nirvana fan hipsters who hates Teen Spirit because Kurt said he doesnt like the media buzz about it. I am, however, a huge Nirvana fan, and although they put out 3 amazing albums and some of the best concerts ever, Teen Spirit isnt my favorite Nirvana song... probably in the top 10 though ;) fuck hair metal!

  • I'm an older guy, 47. After a decade of hair-band crap, I was pretty bumbed. Then, I'm driving home from work one day and flip on KLOS (FM radio, Los Angeles). "......what is THIS?!" "Huh?" "Who in the hell is THIS?!?!" "This is fucking INCREDIBLE!!!!!!" Found out a little while later: Teen Spirit......

  • Is this video supposed to be the "conspiracy theory" of grunge music or something?

  • Soundgarden and Alice In Chains were already signed, Henry.

  • What's funny to me is the generation that worshiped Kurt and Eddie Vedder are all now(along with they chill-dren) watching reality TV and on Facebook.

  • @2313Productions Oh, and posting themselves on Youtube!

  • soundgarden and alice in chains were already signed before nirvana, henry

  • Comment removed

  • teen spirit wasn't even their best song. it was just their most popular. but still a good song nonetheless. in bloom was my favorite song from them haha

  • @powertotehchord I think EXACTLY the same

  • 07:04 - where's this footage from? looks like reading festival 1991

  • you're not a true fan of nirvana if the only song you like is smells like teen spirit

  • @MrCobainfan

exactly, i know what people mean, i mean it really did change everything, but in all honesty, In Utero was their best record, and one of the best records EVER put out, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, Milk It, Pennyroyal Tea, Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol and Heart Shaped Box truly is a beautiful song... I fucking love that album. I wish I lived i nthe 90's, the 10's or w/e... fucking sucks.

  • @MrCobainfan I agree , I would suggest it shouldn't even be in your top 5 Nirvana songs. Came from a great album tho :)

  • @mythic32 yea, that's true dude

  • Chris Booker can't sing for shit and "Sir Mix A-lot" over-reacted the riff like a pussy who doesn't listen rock.

  • Stop with smells like teen spirit !!!, they have other songs too , paper cuts , scoff , mr.moustache

  • Oh what a surprise, pop acts saying that smells like teen spirit is their favourite song (and the only one they know)

  • Sorry but Nirvana is nothing like the Beatles. Both great but The Beatles are just incomparable.

  • @1rtwilson Why you compare them? The Beatles are the best, not even Queen, Zeppelin or any band compares to them, but Nirvana is such a great band

  • this is freaking ridiculous. just cus you like metal or punk or pop doesnt mean you only have to like that genre of music. close minded people are just stupid. appreciate good music no matter what. ''just because you dont like opera, dont say its sucks, listen to pavorati and tell me that fat bastard cant sing.'' -zak wylde

  • @raymondjay365 True I agree with you there, but the majority of most 'popular' music nowadays is all commercialised and is all produced on computers, auto tune and what ever. Some might say the true musical essence in most 'artists' now is gone.

  • There is good reason why GOOD bands scoff at grunge. Its not hard to figure out. Same reason why grunge died so fast. Of course Metallica and Zeppelin live on generation after generation... Grunge killed shitty metal bands, thank God, but as grunge and metal/hard rock fought its obvious rock/metal WON!

  • yeah sure Robert Plant...punk was created in the UK...the Ramones and Richard Hell and Iggy Pop were all English...wtf...

  • @vsmcax1007 punk is created in uk,do you know anything bout punk

  • @vsmcax1007

sex pistols were british. although iggy and the ramones were from america, the sex pistols played a big role in punk.

  • @BadReligi0nFan1 in making it a fashion statement anyway

  • @CanadianChronic2121

i'm pretty sure "you know you're right" was recorded during the nevermind sessions before they were big

  • @fellXhouseXranger

Nah , it was recorded in january 94

  • @fellXhouseXranger Wrong. It was recorded on January 30 1994.

  • @FrancisNirvana

    my bad

  • @CanadianChronic2121 All Apologies was written in 1990. 2 Years before she was born. You're an idiot for thinking that.

  • @CanadianChronic2121 No not really.

Cuz Kurt was never Suicidal in 1993 and 1994. He wanted to Live and make new changes in his Life with his Daughter Frances, and DIVORCE Courtney Love.

he also stated in the Interview Film Kurt Cobain: About a son, that he was happy and quitted drugs, and wanted to live for years to come.

And the song You Know Your Right was stated For Courtney Love, How she ruined His life.

  • I hope I die before i turn into Pete Townsend.

  • I don't think Robert Plant knows how much Dave and Kurt (not sure about Krist) was influenced by Led Zeppelin although Kurt's main influence was the Beatles to my understanding. While Dave's was Zeppelin.

  • Why are all these pussies who play Pop music trying to tell us that 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is their favourite song? Do you even know Nirvana or Grunge? Go back to your fucking knitting.

  • @MarkWalker95 Smells Like Teen Spirit is a pop song.

  • @zebra9479974 no. its a punk rock song. nirvana is a punk rock band with some pop.

  • @MarkWalker95 Just because they make pop music doesnt mean they don't like "Grunge" an stuff, stfu, Lady gaga LOVES Heavy metal yet shes pop queen, people can like more than two things fuck tard.

  • @MarkWalker95 Haters gonna Hate... Let'em love whatever they want to.

  • @MarkWalker95 Right, because it's unthinkable that someone could appreciate a different genre of music to the one they perform.

  • @MarkWalker95 you calling thurston moore a pop pussy?

  • @MarkWalker95 They played along with many of these bands you arrogant twat, Led Zeppelin was a huge inspiration on music and Kurt liked everyone of these bands you idioy.

  • I came here for robert plant, then i was like, awh poo he dosen't like grunge D:

  • Leave it to Ron Wood and Keith in the end too sum it all up. Nuff Said.

  • Plus Alice Chains came out with Man in a Box first Henry Rollins!

  • Oh for gods sake! Fuck all that crap! JUNKIE!

  • "what happened in '91 was you finally got your own punk"

... oh ok so MC5 and The Stooges werent punk in 67.

  • Shut the fuck up Henry Rollins

  • those old cunts at 9:02 make me sick it should of been someone like richards who died not cobain. lifes a bitch

  • the fuck is plant talking about? we got punk before you did ya dildo.

  • @MrXxiii I think we can all agree upon the fact that punk originated in th UK.

  • @C1MM3R1AN lol. no. no we can't.

  • @MrXxiii Well, the rest of us can and go educate yourself.

  • @battalion30 ...you go..., was what I meant

  • @battalion30 really? so tell me. educate when did punk get started exactly?

  • @C1MM3R1AN Think you better read PLEASE KILL ME by Legs McNeil.

  • man this show fucking sucks i hate these people.

  • robert plant summed it up perfectly

  • Don't jump on me but he was dealing with depression since he was a kid. When his parents divorced he just kind of lost a bit of who he was. Music was an outlet for him.He wanted to make money from his music but not be put on a thrown and be some kind of god. That's alot to deal with. Plus, he was having alot of physical pain that the doctors couldn't figure out what was physically wrong. When certain drugs didn't work well heroin did. You take heroin, depression, fame & family you have destruction.

  • SONIC YOUTH SUCKS!

  • HE HAD THREE TIMES THE LETHAL DOSE OF HERION IN HIS BODY. CHECK HIS AUTOPSY REPORT. HE COULD NOT SHOOT HIMSELF ON THAT MUCH HEROIN. YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE SUPERMAN. SOMEONE WAS DOING HERION WITH HIM AND MURDERED HIM AND ITS OBVIOUSLY WAS COVERED UP.

  • @MrBonaar heroin takes a while to make effect. he had time to kill himself. deal with it, im a diehard nirvana fan too.

  • @luisfortz an intravenous dose take 2-3 sec to kick in. thats a commonly known fact about heroin. ......wow?

  • @MrBonaar actually it takes 5-8

  • I love Sir-Mix-A-Lot

  • as a big rolling stones fan i got their point at the end, if you dont wanna be famous why put out the record?

  • no offense to the Rolling Stones but Keith looks like a crack head in this video lol

  • I can understand what Kurt thought when he was tired of Smells Like Teen Spirit.

If I hear that fucking song one more time, I might blow my brains out too.

  • Courtney Love definitely killed him!!

  • Comment removed

  • @blica1 Yea because you totally know her? Don't be an ass.

  • @Seanjkbs i don't have to know her..just look at her career choice and the music she obviously listened to in order to get to where she is now..she's no alternative rock fan..she's just trying to look like she is..it's called lacking attention..my fucking 70 yr old neighbor knew that song whenever it came on the radio, so her saying it was her favorite only justifies the proverbial band wagon she was trying to jump on.it's like when Michael Jackson came out with "beat it"

  • @blica1 You are right because someone sings pop, hip hop, or r&b means they can't be a genuine fan of alt rock. Again, don't be an ass.

  • @Seanjkbs all hard rock fans all of a sudden liked Jackson because Eddie Van Halen did the lead solo on it..that's called trying to be a part of whatever music scene or song is trendy at the moment..has nothing to do with being a fan..and i'm not being an ass, just stating an opinion, but if you can't realize that, then you sir, are the ass..

  • Kurt never wanted to become as famous as he did he loved playing at the underground stuff and becoming known is his city and state he never wanteeed to become as big as he did, the money and fame just became too much for hiim and he hated it he also hated everyone just wanting to listen to smells like teen spirit he didnt like the fame and money did not buy his happiness, he was deppresed before but this just added on to it.

  • why does everyone keep talking about punk ,ITS NOT PUNK ITS GRUNGE!!

  • KURT MEANT TO BECOME FAMOUS OMG HE ALSO WANTED TO SMEAR HIS SHIT ALL OVER THE MEDIA INCLUDING HIS SUICIDAL PAIN.

  • @thatbastardson

nah hes just like a talking £10 bag

  • God man. why do all these bands love subdividing us fans?

the bitchiness that goes on is unbelievable! enjoy music as music. as rock n roll !

dont hate any type of Rock or Metal etc...

  • 06:27

  • keith richards is a fucking dickhole.

  • @thatbastardson ehhh keith is only a dick when he's on heroin.

  • 00:42 lmao

  • "Why are they making records?"

Because they love music, and self expression.

  • Also its bullshit when people say that Kurt Cobain didnt want to be famous. I have never heard Kurt say that he didnt want to be famous. He killed himself because he was deppressed way before he became famous. When the fuck did he say he didnt want to be famous. I never heard or read it people just make shit up.

  • @notavailableisnotava He killed himself cause he was way too fucked up. I think thats why. He was famous 2.5 years and he was ok. The heroin thing pretty much killed the exitment of living

  • @srekazinskas

he was killed you fool. read up a bit on the evidence

  • Nirvana had became everything that kurt check it out right before kurts death he planned to put an end to nirvana and spend the rest of his life taking care of his family

  • @notavailableisnotava He wanted to be famous but when he was famous he didnt like it! Get it Einstein?

  • @notavailableisnotava he didnt kill him self

look up EL DUCE Interview on you tube

  • @notavailableisnotava He didnt he wanted to walk away and spend time with his duaghter and thats when the lables got pissed and then curtney love got pissed and wanted to fuckin devorce him and all the depression came back from the past

  • @notavailableisnotava

I grew up in that era and Nirvana was a band I looked up to and loved. Cobain was sort of an idol is some ways. I listened to everything they came out with. I watched all the interviews and videos. I remember or multiple occasions him saying he never asked for the fame and that he never really wanted it; he just wanted to play. I don't remember whether he came out and said "I don't want to be famous" but he implied it and said it other ways. RIP KC

  • Thats bullshit Alice in Chains was signed before Nirvana .Henry Rollins i thought you would know better

  • fuck you rolling stones he didnt kill himself because he wanted to prove a point he killed himself because he couldnt stand anyones disaproval and it was this drive to be a perfectionalist that eventually made him decide that he wasnt good enough for the life he was living, and he decided to kill himself thinking that the world would be better off.

  • i meant kurt

  • kirt is the man who changed the face of the entire music scene and started a revolution in the process and im damn proud to have been a part of it

  • fuck keith richards and that other guy "if you don't want to be famous then why were they making records?" it's an art form to express yourself not a cash cow as it was for your generation you dumb british washed up musician

  • @razorramon310 They sure enjoyed that cash cow, being they didn't exactly return their royalty checks. If they only wanted to make art, they wouldn't have signed with Epic to release their music to the masses. Now i'm not saying they sucked up all the attention they got,but they knew what they were getting into once they signed on the dotted line. And fyi, that "other guy" is Ron Wood.Maybe you should familiarize yourself with the major players in the industry before you slam them.

  • Nirvana wasn't from Seattle, They were from Aberdeen.

  • SLTS is over rated. Lounge Act is better.

  • @MaxxPaulTv dude all their stuff is good, but it's just that that song changed the game hen it came out

  • I think its cool that Robert Plant can acknoweledge that the punk movement was important and also were fed up with floyd and even his own band zeppelin.

  • Robert Plant speaks like a timid little girl lol. Mind you, considering his music, I shouldn't be surprised.

  • @chrisgonatakethepiss His music was on another level than most any other rock band in history. I like Nirvana, but they can't hold a stick to Zeppelin. Robert Plant is one hell of a humble man. Maybe he sounds timid to you, but he's simply a mild mannered down to earth legend.

  • @HeavyD2544 - Another deluded fan. Led Zepplin suck dude, and Stairway to Heaven?? Shittest song ever made. Just.. mind blowingly bad.

  • @chrisgonatakethepiss You're not even worth wasting anymore time on. Please go away now.

  • @HeavyD2544 - You're a lost cause. Good luck on seeing the truth one day.

  • @chrisgonatakethepiss What are you still doing here chump? I told you go away.

  • @HeavyD2544 - Yeah, like I'm going to listen to some nobody off the internet. Some (probably) geeky, obese 5 feet tall keyboard warrior. You don't know me but I'm a tough guy- I DON'T TAKE SHIT FROM NOBODY!!!! :p

  • @chrisgonatakethepiss Good for you man. You've gained my approval. *Applause*

  • @HeavyD2544 - *Bows in response to applause*

  • @chrisgonatakethepiss Oops. I mistook their booing for applause. No idea how that happened.

  • @HeavyD2544 - You applauded, not anyone else. You're clearly delusional, now go away please :)

  • @chrisgonatakethepiss Delusional because of how sarcastic I am. Sure.

  • i love led zeppelin but i think that robert plant is wrong. if punk came from a country, i think i would say that it came out of america. other than the kinks and the who, what other british bands have had more of an influence on punk than the velvet underground, the stooges, patti smith, iggy pop, mc5, television, the modern lovers, the sonics and the new york dolls? all of the aforementioned bands are american.

  • @dacraba20 Yeah and many other bands as well, just that Nirvana was the first band to commercialize that sound.

Clearly he and other artists in the video didn't know much about underground scene.

  • im tired of asking people if they like nirvana to find out that the only song they like is "smells like teen spirit' its over played, kurt hated it, and it doesn't compare to alot of thier other songs.

  • @MrVincentbarajas45 Aero Zeppelin was the best Nirvana song IMO.

  • Well that was very cool until Keith and Ron opened opened their mouths -- what a coupla wankers

  • @pfliegaphonic ron's got a point though. I love pearl jam and nirvana, but that whole "do I wanna be famous or dont I" complex is kind of a dumb mindset. it's like walking into a crowded room and wanting to bang garbage can lids together but not wanting people to turn and look at you. why the hell were you making all that noise then? ron's assesment is spot on: "well why are you making records then?"

  • @packeropie I get that point and it's legitimate. But I think actually Ronny isn't making an argument about art and fame... he's incapable of believing any artist would actually shun the spotlight because I believe he thinks the spotlight is the point. That's where I think he and someone like Kurt differ in their artistic motivation, and why I think the argument that you should have to want to be idolized just because you make a recording is a weak argument.

  • @pfliegaphonic yea, you got a point there. one of my biggest pet peeves tho is celebrities and famous people who act as if being famous is a problem or a burden (not saying I don't think the constant spotlight can't be frustrating, but making millions of $ and being in the spotlight, not a bad problem to have). Johnny Knoxville put it perfectly: "people act like being famous is such a problem...shut up, there are people out there with real problems, being famous is not a problem

  • @packeropie I agree there are a lot worse problems that riches and fame. However, though having a lot of money may be great... having a camera in your face all the time sucks. Just because somebody is an artist doesn't mean they want what fame brings. We dont' treat our fine artists like that. And we don't expect our super rich to ever face the public to explain their actions (I would pay to see that!)... but somehow it's ok to expect a pop culture star to open up their whole life? Weird.

  • @pfliegaphonic I definitely agree. it is an unfortunate side effect of being famous, you suddenly have like 0 privacy. If I were in such a position, I would for sure get annoyed with it.

  • @pfliegaphonic not that kurt or eddie vedder bitched and moaned all the time about being famous, I think it was more a matter of kurt not knowing how to handle it, so it's not him being a whiner about his celebrity status, just him not being able to fully handle it.

  • @pfliegaphonic Spot on! Two pointless opinions. Kurt's suicide was the end result of untreated depression. However, maybe the thought of playing Teen Spirit at age 70 settled the "Burn out or Fade away" dilemma? ALSO, let's not forget that Ronny & Keith have repeatedly bragged about the millions they blew on Heroin & Crack. To me that makes their ignorant comments even more disrespectful. But it was 17 years ago so maybe they both went on to feel regret.....and do a $150 per ticket world tour?

  • Its not just about white youth, it was about all youth. Jeez.

  • Funny how Smells like teen spirit is the all time favorite of some celebs on this vid (so they say), but if I were to make a fav song list of Nirvana it would probably end up being at number 30

  • Actually Would by Alice in Chains was the song that killed " cock rock"

  • Holy crap, who wrote the captions and what is their native language? How did they turn "called Nirvana" into "got formed" and "documentation" into "mutation", among many others?

  • Everyone in Seattle thought what ended up happening to Nirvana was gonna happen Soundgarden b/c they were one of the first bands to get really noticed in that scene along with The Melvins and few others. Soundgarden were the first out of all the "grunge" bands to get signed to a major label. Really all I'm saying is that Nirvana is overrated. Yes they made good songs and all that but they saying Kurt was a poet and basically treating him like the god of alternative rock music is stupid.

  • @fourstringlovemaker Soundgarden is that it never felt authentic. I love them as a band, but here you have two frontmen who sing about depression and failing at life etc. Kurt ends up killing himself with a shotgun, while Chris carefully combs his hair and trims his beard to look *fabulous* (after soundgarden he straightens it, then gels it up to keep up with fashion). Soundgarden always had more musical talent, but they were never as authentic as Kurt was with his lyrics.

  • everytime time i drift off from Nirvana and listen to other bands for a few months or so im like wow these bands are really good then at a random moment ill put on Nirvana and then ill forget about those bands and have to be totaly emersed in Nirvana for another long period of time

  • This album came out when I was an angry, confused 14 year old and I still love it as an angry, confused 35 year old. Timeless music!

  • @CarneAsadaTaco That's the spirit! high five!

  • @CarneAsadaTaco I can't say i was on board with Nirvana but I want to thank you for your comment because it resonates with me in terms of that time and other bands. Well done.
