  • i think this song is about the book: "Lolita"...idk.

  • I always thought this song was about a buxom lady that walked into a bar and commanded everyone's attention, while a mousey kinda girl looked on and wished she could be like her. but i can totally see everyone else's interpretations. music and art are so awesome just for that reason! we're all right!..... maybe lol

  • this song makes me think of the eerie life and death of jonbenet ramsey

  • DRFTGUYIFHKJBNM

    I love her.

  • she is just...perfect

  • There is little known about her personal life. So we cannot assume. Although I'd wish to know.

  • she really needs to make a studio version of this

  • BEST SONG EVER:):):)yup id be a lesbian too. just for this song.or a lesbian with regina. god shes so pretty:) oh god

  • It's about rape y'all.

  • even if she's a lesbian, shut up and listen to her brilliant music! :)

  • she talks about fucking guys in songs, too. that doesnt say anything about her. regardless, this is a brilliant song and im sure we can all agree to love her forever!

  • EPIC

  • I don't think that she's gay, but even if she was I think it would only make her more interesting... Just my opinion, hope it didn't come out wrong!

  • She's not a lesbian. She's an art creating art(s). I ♥ Regina Spektor

  • I'd like to believe she's pansexual so I have a chance <3

  • my ex girlfriend always though this song reminded her of me... i dont think spektor is a lesbian but i think you can interperate it however you like

  • Is she saying, "wanna bet souls for love" ?

  • @damnfine2010 "Wanna bet so's her love" I think. As in "her body was free / wanna bet so's her love."

  • is it wrong this song is strangly attractive #sexualFrustration

  • to everyone who's stating "it's about rape" or "it's about being a lesbian," please hush. I don't think anyone other than Regina knows for sure what this is about. These are just interpretations. I can definitely see where people are coming from in saying it's about rape, but I don't think that is a confirmed thing. It rarely is with songs, especially Regina's. She addresses abstract ideas in her songs, so we all interpret them differently. Chill and enjoy the music. Stop arguing!

  • shes my future wiffe bitches get away!!! lolll can someone please be nicee and comment on my cover of a wonderfull song! im thinking of covering a regina song next! can anyone help me which great hit? im thinking consequence of sounds! HELP NEEDED! ; p

  • @swiminthissilense uhh sorry but I think shes my future wife <3

  • Her body was free...

No matter where she got the perspective from, this song is awfully graphical.

    Amazing...

  • *song

  • Not lesbian - this DONG's about a rape, as seen from the rapist's point of view. Gives me chills All over my body - so scary! But AMAZING!!!

  • and what's the matter if she is Lesbian??? ¬¬ she is the best and that's all

  • "I wasn't even her first, so don't blame it on me" No doubt in my mind this is from a rapist's point of view.

  • @bobafooz Rapist, much?

  • Where are you people getting this lesbian idea from? Because she's singing about a woman? I've always understood this to be a song about a victim told from the perspective of her rapist, and considering that Spektor is most definitely not one of those, one can safely assume that this is not meant to be taken as auto-biographical.

That's if my interpretation is correct, of course. This may just as well be a song about a sexy, sexy lady, albeit a very sinisterly sung one.

  • @EdwardTheBooble: O_o

Would you mind being a little more forward, because I think you're too shy and subtle.

  • she looks like shes stuck in the 60s and i like it

  • The girl with long brown hair sounds like a paid stripper. But she didn't make the dude (aka Regina) pay (her body was free). The guy KNEW this was a job to her (I wasn't her first) and she might have TOLD him she had a real bf or whatever (Why couldn't that be me)

  • She's said it before, she enjoys taking on different perspectives. Especially men, their interesting, she said. doesnt mean she's gay.

  • i think shes talking about being of jealous of how beautiful the other girl is

but idk i cant find the lyrics to find out :/

either way, its an AWESOME song

  • orgasmic.

  • if shes a lesbian or not, I'd lesbian her all night, up and down and all around. I would make love to her so well she would become a lesbian, then I would love her so good she would turn back. oh she would get it. as I'm sure she would want it... lucky her.

  • oh I'd lesbian her all night

  • i am a long haired brunette with crooked but good teeth ;)

  • Songs like this are why people still fall in love with the blues.

  • Hay gurl

  • She's not a lesbian... jeez.

  • @MuSIcLuVEr20015 I know that but, if she was, I would not care. She's a great artist, and that's all that should matter! That's all that I am trying to say. People base too much on race, religion, and sexual orientation!

  • What does it matter if she's lesbian or not? She's a great talent, enjoy the music and stfu !

  • 5:05 - 5:16 makes my stomach clench involuntarily.

  • My friend made me listen to this cause my hair is dark brown nd reachs past my butt. And I'm never going to cut it. Heh heh this song rocks!

  • Anyone know what this song is about?

  • @modblush

    A rapist.

  • shes so hot... makes me wanna be the woman in that song :D

  • Darn! i just wish the sound quality was good. it would just make it that much better...

  • @TheGirlinAmask98 I actually think the quality of the sound in this recording kind of adds to the atmosphere, haha. Like, the quality in her live recordings usually annoys me, but it sort of works for this song.

  • Why are people so obsessed with having to label everything. Straight, gay, bi, who cares anyway? What's it to you if someone's views on life aren't the same as yours? THAT's what life is about.

  • dam i love that girl

  • Regina's straight in my head. She's also in love with me, though, so you might want to take that with a grain of salt.

  • Jeez! What a performance! When she says "I thought My GOOOOODDD!!" near the end, it just freaks me out, in a good way.

  • doesnt this kinda sound like its about rape.... whatever its about its absolutely beautiful ^^

  • She's adopting the perspective of a male persona, whenever you're writing your gender, age, morals, etc are completely malleable, you become the character. That's how you distinguish a good writer from a bad one.

  • this song sound like it should be in a movie

  • 14 people were drinking really hot coffee and when they burned their tongues their hands had a spazz-attack and hit the dislike button instead of the like button.

    Gorgeous song!

  • I'd be a lesbian for her.

  • @jmallen62691 ME TOO!

  • @jmallen62691 I am a lesbian for her.

  • @jmallen62691 honey , youve always been one. :P

  • she has a boyfriend.

    :)

  • @RedKarky

are you sure? how do you know?

I'm a huge fan, so just out of curiosity I've done some research on her relationships and such, and I've really found no evidence that she's straight, or any that she's gay :P

  • @BloomAndGrow One of my teachers went to school with a guy who later dated Regina. They met because they both played gigs in the same places. They broke up and the guy wrote a song about her. It's called Rotten Love by Levy.

  • @RedKarky NUUUUUUUUU i wanted to be hers :(

  • no, I don't think she is. But if she was, there shouldn't be a problem with it anyway guys. Regina's songs tell stories, from all different perspectives.

  • guys... i'm not sure if you're just stupid or a bit .. i dunno something. but why can't she sing about another woman without being persecuted, or labelled, as a lesbien? There are pleanty of women who talk about other women, without thinking of it that way -.-

  • Regina Spektor could also be talking about an older version of herself, one that she wants to be again... or she could be talking about who she desires to become?

She could also be a lesbian, she could also be writing from a different person's perspective... who knows.

  • @catieola182

    It's about rape.

  • Regina Spektor writes songs from different perspectives all the time. In "Oedipus" she takes the view of a prince/boy, in this one she could be doing the same thing. It doesn't mean she's a lesbian, guys, relax.

  • @INF3darkgreen it doesn't matter if she was anyways, let's not make it sound like it would be a negative thing please.

  • @amarcos718 im sorry i wasnt meaning to make it sound bad, just some people seem to be very curious, my humblest appologies.

  • Regina writes many different songs from many different characters of different genders and sexualities. Who knows, maybe she was in character of a lesbian? Her songs like BELT, My Man, Paris, Ode to Divorce, and many others seem to be in the perspective of a woman towards a man. She detaches herself from her music, and I don't interpret her music as an interpersonal self expression. I like to think of her music as more humanistic than gender specific. When music is androgynous, it becomes whole.

  • @deetardeded That's true. She often says that when she's writing her songs she writes from perspectives of fictional characters. So it's not a far-fetched idea at all to say that she might just be writing from someone else's perspective, because I honestly don't think she has many songs that she wrote from Regina Spektor's point of view.

  • To be quite honest, if you were a true Regina fan you wouldn't be bothered about her sexuality...

  • @BrittanyLeona97 I don't know that people are 'bothered' so much as curious.

  • @BrittanyLeona97 exactly!

  • Not that it would matter to me if she were a lesbian, mind. After all, in the alternative universe where I might actually be in with a shot, she might not be. Or I might be one myself. Hell, I might even be jewish...

  • Makes me think of Lolita too.

As to the lesbian thing, the fact that no-one seems to know anything clealry shows that she keeps her personal life very close. Conversely, if songs like this and Summer in the City are evidence of lesbianic persuasion, then she's unusually open about it in her music. That seems like a contradiction to me.

  • @annamay819 I'm pretty sure she's dating Only Son who does the beatboxing stuff in Hotel Song. She's also said during interviews that she likes to write songs from the perspective of men, so that could be a reason why some of her songs sound like she's attracted to women. But who really knows...

  • @Brooke71309 she defs just writes songs from male perspectives. i dont get why there's much of an argument... you were right.

  • I've always thought it was about the book Lolita, sung from Humbert's point of view.

  • or maybe she's just comfortable with her sexuality, guys......

  • I don't think shes lez. maybe its a girl insecure and envying another girl's body and the way she holds herself. and she has an eating disorder or something? Idk i also heard it was about rape..? I'm confused, but there is a way deeper meaing :) love this.

  • this song is so mysterious/beautiful/emotional/perfect.

  • oh my gooood why shouldn't it be me?~! ~i LovE this song >.<

  • @BloomAndGrow I got a copy using dirpy.com but I'm not sure wether theres anyway you can get it legally. One of the only two songs I've pirated (the other being Paris by Regina Spektor) :)

  • @Jackhorse42

Ah okay thank you so much :)

    I will look into that

  • Idk if she's a lesbian or bisexual. I love regina b/c she's like an actress portraying a character; it's called artistic license, people. For some reason she reminds me of Robert Plant here.

  • Sometimes, Regina writes songs from the point of view of a man. Take "Summer In the City" for example.

  • @seizetheday224 um no. she writes them from the perspective of a LESBIAN!!! listen to the lyrics clearly it is a gay woman. get over it

  • dig the way she says oh laaaawwwrddddd.

    it's fun. :)

  • I aspire to put that level of emotion and showmanship into every song I sing. Regina is the only person whose songs I sing, besides my own. Bless her heart.

  • I love Regina <3

  • I can listen to her in any mood I'm in.

  • Dear Regina Spektor,

You make me happy. Please never stop making music.

Better yet, make more music as carefree and expressive as this.

    Much love,

    Ellie.

  • doesn't it remind you jazz?

  • @92diesirae BLUES*

  • @annamay819 in her song "Hotel Song" she says "Whos the lady in the dress, I found her number in a folded up napkin, but I couldn't find her address." Maybe she is exploring different visions of attraction. In this song, it felt to me more that she was singing more of insecurity, that she admired this woman, and in some ways emulated her. However, I could see this being a song about attraction as well. What I love about her music is that there leaves so much to interpretation.

  • I'm in love. I swear.

  • i love this song.

    where can i get it?

  • @johnbkrasinskilover Did you ever find out where to get this song?? There are sooo many of her songs that I find various places that aren't on her cd's or records

  • Woah =D

  • She has so many facets to her singing style... but I really like the sultry, jazzy side like this one.

  • When I hear this song i think about Nobokov's Lolita. It's clearly sexual but not nessesarily in a good way. "I wasen't even her first so dont blame it on me. You know what the bible says..." Someone justifying this forbidden desire by refering to the bible. If that is what it's about its very creepy but also a very good song.

  • I'm happier than ever. After being a fan for many, many years, she is FINALLY comming to Denmark (my contry) :'D

  • I think the opening line is a reference to Bob Dylan's song "Girl From the North Country" where a line goes "Please see if her hair hangs long, it rolls and flows all down her breast. . ." I know one of her big influences is Dylan, but idkk.

  • where can I get this song ? o: It's AMAZING!

  • @Maluuuuuuh

I used realplayer to download the video, from there you can keep it as a mp4 or whatever or convert it to just audio :) That sounded so much like a product placement deal... Lol.

  • I think this may be my favorite song by Regina. Can anyone tell me why because I myself do not quite understand...? Is it the hypnotic trance you get that makes your heart melt and your mind to block out everything except for the Jewish goddess's voice? The odd but brilliant point of view the song talks from? Is it how her lyrics can make you feel as if you are actually in the very same room with this long brown haired woman with a rockin', killer body? Is it the instruments that reach out to u?

  • Lol how is "lesbian" offensive, it's okay to ask that. It's a natural thing. Just like calling someone from Mexico a Mexican...it's okay, it's true.

  • this is a beautiful picture of her, then again all pictures of her are quite beautiful if we may think so x)

  • @annamay819 There's not much known about her love life, so no idea.

  • @Leritu lol I think she is straight. But it wouldn't matter because regina sings from the viewpoint of characters a lot.

  • @Leritu No Looked it up once because I got confused during summer in the city. She sings more as a story teller and a lot of her songs aren't necessarily about her life though some are. Think Chemo Limo, she obviously doesn't have 3 kids. I think she has a boyfriend, but what do I know haha.

  • @Leritu She's a russian jew, so no.

  • @annamay819 Idk why but I doubt it.

  • @annamay819 I feel like she's more jealous than attracted to the woman with "long brown hair".

  • @annamay819 Why do people always ask that? What exactly makes her or doesn't make her a lesbian? What compels you to ask that question?

  • @Darksunshinerain87 I think they are confused because the song idealizes a women and regina is a women. The song would make you think that. But regina has said on many occasion that she sings from the viewpoint of other characters like acting.

  • @annamay819 i'm pretty sure she's not, why do you say? are you interested haaa!

  • @annamay819 is it important?

  • @annamay819 she doesn't seems to be lesbian but i dont know

  • @annamay819 If you listen to any of her interviews, she states plainly that people need to realize she is telling stories with her songs, they are not actually about HER personally.

  • @Destinia123 true but to quote oscar wilde "Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter."

  • @Destinia123 ooh and "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth"

  • @minimacca999 That's true too, awesome quotes.

And yeah, she's playing a character but must have some connection with whatever's being said or it wouldn't exist, right?

So I'd be interested to see what made her identify with this character story.

  • @annamay819 And really, do you take all her songs literally? :P In Oedipus, she really was the 32nd son right? lol

Song writers tell a story and play a part, and that's what she's doing.

  • @annamay819

I don't know anything but I don't think we can draw the conclusion from her singing a song about a girl. she writes alot of character sketches rather than personal experiences in her songs, so it could be easily from a man's point of view.

  • @annamay819

Not as lesbian, just Russian :D

  • @annamay819 why would that be offensive?

  • @annamay819 i hope so

  • @annamay819 she's not a lesbian, in her song 'samson' she sings about her boyfriend who had cancer, as well as the biblical reference to Samson.

  • @annamay819 Why should it be an offence? LOL

  • @annamay819

What would be offensive by saying she could be a lesbian? Would it be a bad thing for you?

By the way, I don't think so.

  • @annamay819

    no, she has a boyfriend.

  • @annamay819 :) it can't be offesinve to ask if someone is a lesbian or not ..! sorry, just wanted to say so :)

  • @annamay819 She's not a lesbian. She said that as you can in a book, she can write in the point of view of a man.

  • @fuzzykinzthecat

that's true, but that doesn't mean she isn't a lesbian. Like Leritu said, there's very little known about her love life. I'm pretty sure there is no evidence that she is a lesbian, but there isn't any that she's not either.

As far as I know, at least :P

    I love her to death.

  • @fuzzykinzthecat totally agree. She can write from whatever view she wants and it would still be an amazing piece of musical genius.

  • @annamay819 she better not be! my whole life is banking on this!

  • @annamay819 no she's straight why

  • For god sake people, just enjoy the music and not worry about the sexuality of it. Regina is the most creative and brilliant writer/singers we have. Stop worrying about homosexuality being bad or "eek" or "rape"? Is something..wrong with homosexuality? It's....natural. Common people it's the 21st century, let's work on this whole "non-ignorance" thing.

  • @savannah631 amen

  • Lalalala has never sounded so beautiful

  • heard her for the first time today at about 11 30 am, fell in love with her and her music at 2 30 pm

  • so creepy and beautiful! gives me chills

  • DAMN when she says "I thought My GOD!" it's so incredible.

  • LOVE her voice. but it's hard to ignore the lyrics...eek

  • @chiefyyweefy You're missing the point of the song in that case, but each to their own.

  • love it ;)

  • wow. i fell in love with her music within a few days. she's just amazing.

  • I'm in love.

  • @skankmuffinn As am I. :)

  • is it not stunning that she can deliver such meaning through the view of the opposite sex? this song is a complete admiration to the female gender

  • @wevbiotch it's not necessarily through the view of the opposite sex. there is such a thing as homosexuality. :)

  • I thought lesbian before rape

  • she sing cool :D

  • For a couple seconds the opening sounded like paint it black

  • @Mario12874 Lol yes, you're right. :D

  • @Mario12874

it really does! i love that song <3

  • @Mario12874 yeaaaaah,

  • did anyone consider that this song is not at all about a rapist or jealous eating disorders; but in fact about lesbianism???

  • @violaamber No. Not at all.

  • if you say this because your a lesbian, i high-five you!
