What car is that rear bumper from? My Passat also has the turn-down tips so no hole cut in the rear valence...it sucks because I want to put a Magnaflow in there but have to make it turn-down as well.
@VooDooXII It does get a bit sooty when I run 100% Diesel. It doesn't get sooty with Bio. Cars with the turned down pipes also get sooty from what I've seen, maybe not as fast, I don't know..
hey man i am looking to put an exhaust on my tdi that is legal and I was wondering what I could do? should i just go to my local exhaust shop and be like put ur cheapest cat-back exhaust on?
@sjbd94 A lot of people just cut the muffler off their TDIs, that's the cheapest cat-back exhaust option. Its legal in most places and doesn't add a lot of noise to the exhaust.
I realize you posted this over 4 years ago, but thought I'd see if you still have the car. I'm thinking about getting a golf tdi, but hesitant because of their not so great reliability reputation. What were your experiences? Any interest in selling (I'm in glendale)? Awesome car btw!
What? I heard the guy said that this one has got no muffler. I've got a 2002 SAAB Viggen 5-door with Nordic Stage 3 software and corresponding hardware and suspension components. I have a 3" downpipe with a 200 cell stainless cat and a straight pipe and I make 10 times more noise than this little Golf. I do like this golf, it's a much better alternative to a Hybrid--more torque, better looks, better handling, cooler, etc.
Awesome dyno run! I love anything with a diesel engine! period.
Lets see some smoke!! Im guessing its not that heavily fulled and has a very balanced air to fuel ratio. Bet its got more power in there with more fuel and timing.
Dont give me any of the "Diesels is no longer a dirty word" crap either!! Diesel's have always been cleaning than gassers! Even the ones that smoke like trains! You just can see gasoline engines toxic fumes.
People who really love diesel engines love black smoke!
Love the diesels too! Will be doing some tuning this week to see what else I can get out of it. Haven't done anything since this video was shot a couple years ago. Hopefully will be getting a bigger turbo soon also.
Awesome man! I subscribed. I dont know a lot about aftermarket performace for European diesels (mostly Diesel truck engines and mechanical Mercedes-Benz engines). Definitely something I would love to learn more about. Love learing new things about specific diesel engines and design.
Good luck with it! Hope you get some good power gain!
@maddvibe hey what did you do to your engine, cuz im thinking of getting a 02 tdi and i wanted to tune up the engine, so i was wondering if you could give me some pointers, like what you did to yours, and also if i do tune the engine up it wont effect how the diesel runs right?
i have a vw golf tdi. its a good car but we have a problem something is wrong with the turbo and the car can hit a maximum of 120km/hr in 4 and 5 gear. i was wondering what can be wrong with it and if it can cause any damage to the engine. i really dont care much about speed since in cannada the roads r shit and the max u can go on the highway is a 100 mk but can anybody clarify??????

Here in Europe you can buy a stock "GT-TDI" that will pump out 145 horses. I believe they can be chipped to 180bhp but the clutch doesn't last long if you do.
there ar different engines sed in golfv. tdi 90hp, tdi 110 hp tdi 131 hp and i think there is one with 150 hp, not 145!! and you can get more than 400 hp and unbelievable torque with engine like that. 700- 800 nm are possible!
Yes, but that's a MkIV. MkIV GT TDI was rated at 145Bhp. You can tune to 180bhp with relative ease (electronic remap) but you'll have buy a new clutch set every week, since the standard MkIV triple clutch is known to be a little on the weak side when it comes to transmitting large torque figures.
regarding the clutch; not really, i have a 130 bora, remapped to about 170hp, so much torque! no probs with the clutch, the standard clutch is good, just depends how you drive, if you thrash it it will die quickly. i've never heard of a pd145 engine???as far as i'm aware they've done 90/110/115/130/150
WOW so you are putting 128 hop at the wheels, so you may be making like 140 to 150 at the crank. That's like normal gas engine numbers plus you got the torque. So there are after market part to get more power from you VW diesel. Were can I get them?
Typically the higher the concentration of bio the lower the power up to something like 10%. It's really not enough to tell the difference between though. Yeah my MPGs are great, it's all about how you use the extra power. If you're just cruising on the freeway you're going to get great MPGs even on a modded TDI.

How do you think you control the speed of the engine? All engines have a throttle, otherwise we'd just be dumping fuel into the intake and hoping it didn't just stall.
On a diesel engine, YOU control the speed of the engine by increasing the amount of diesel that gets injected directly, the more you press the acellerator the larger measure of diesel is injected hence more power.
Taken from tdiclub FAQ, referencing the 1.9 litre 4-cylinder 90hp (A4 type): On North American models, the turbocharger is a variable-vane type. On European models, the turbocharger is a conventional wastegate type. The North American A4 engine is essentially a Euro 110hp A4 engine but with engine controls optimized for emissions rather than performance.
Don't have to change a thing, just fill up with it and go. Where you can get it depends on where you live. Biodiesel dot org has listings on where you can get it in America. Do a google search if you live elsewhere.
If you've been running diesel for a while you should change your fuel filter after about 2 fill ups of biodiesel because the biodiesel breaks down the diesel crap that accumulates in your tank. If you have an older car you'll need to replace the fuel hoses with newer (more durable ones) because the hot biodiesel going through the injector lines and out of the engine will break down them down. Last time I check biodiesel prices where I live (Washington state) they were about 3.70.
The bio diesel is a better solvent than diesel evidently, so it will disturb and deposits in pipes etc; so if u use bio change filter after 500 miles or so.
westernstatespetroleum dot com. Drive over there and they'll fill you up. Limited hours though. You might also want to call and make sure they have some. They tend to run out every now and then.
i got a 2.0 gttdi 150bhp done 94,000 48,000 miles in 1yr with no service and no problems it is fast aswell top end does just under 140mph and a full tank of diesel gets me about 450miles and thats drivin like a twat lol
I bought a tdi jetta with 176000 miles on it drove the crap out of it for a year and never spent a penny. Plus i ran it biodiesel. Great car everyone should have one. Mine was tuned to 110bhp.
The energy generated by fuels is usually a reaction between Hydrogen and Oxygen. Carbon plays an important role, since it's the natural container of Hydrogen If we add Hydrogen to the carbon we get a fuel: wood adding more Hydrogen, we get a paraffin or oil "Biodiesel" adding an alcohol "Petrol" and adding a methane gas " Natural gas " What we need to get a fuel is: Hydrogen and Carbon eco-combustibleFa Francisco Angulo La Reliquia
NO Its not slow at all! My dads got a 2003 jetta TDI and He had it up to 240 km/h and it had more to go, and it is a really torquey engine in it and it goes like a bat outta hell. It really piut u in the seat. The motor may have 90 hp but it has a tone of torque! And you can buy a chip and new jets for arround 800.-1000.00 that will over double it hp and bring you arround 300 Ftq! and there good on gas. Were able to beat those honda civics stock so its not a bad car! Hauls up hill too!
Get the TDi 100 hp... That's a PD. It does 25 km/l (kilometres per litre) and it has wider torgue than the ordinaty TDis, meaning longer gears, so you don't have to shift all the time, like in most TDis. And it's REALLY fast.
I've never driven a petrol version so I couldn't tell you. It's fun to drive though and has a lot of pep. It's also been quite reliable, never had any major problems.
Yup, 150bhp, the same as VW's petrol-fired 1.8-litre 20v turbo. Now consider that the 1.9-litre diesel produces that power as merely the happy by-product of the torque it develops, which is immense. It's got more torque than a Porsche Boxster S, a V6 Clio or an Impreza Turbo, a hefty 235lb ft to be precise, which it delivers at just 1900rpm. And it weighs less than any of them
aw cmon no smoke? man my 1982 mercedes turbodiesel BELCHED out a plume that would put any peterbilt or tractor puller to shame and clear a swath of tailgators a mile behind me! it was kind of nice actually.. i pointed my exhaust tips towards the rear rather than towards the pavement so if someone was tailing me, i'd make sure they were close enough- shift the ol' gal in neutral and leave a big old carbon deposit on thier bumper.. bahahaha the good old days with that thing
i dont see any black smoke ... whats the point of driving a diesel if theres no smoke? :D

smgman13: "its has like 120 flbs of torque though, from 1800rpm till 3800 :)"
So what? This torque is at very low revs so it results in very little of real power.
See this article: tinyurl(.)com(/)nsl4pf
Golf TDI, 90HP, 0-62 in pathetic 12.7 seconds. LOL, that two seconds slower than the Prius.
As I said then, torque as such is irrelevant if you don't take revs at which it is available into account. And diesels rev poorly.
theannoyingdogpoo 2 years ago
and the real world HWY mileage is far better than the Prius.
Autoweek ran a test about 2 years ago and the Prius was beat by over 8 mpg.

Get the TDi 100 hp... That's a PD. It does 25 km/l (kilometres per litre) and it has wider torgue than the ordinaty TDis, meaning longer gears, so you don't have to shift all the time, like in most TDis. And it's REALLY fast.

Fat little car!,whats it like to drive compared to the petrol version?
And is it reliable?
spadgm 4 years ago
I've never driven a petrol version so I couldn't tell you. It's fun to drive though and has a lot of pep. It's also been quite reliable, never had any major problems.

Have u resprayed it white cos i didnt no they did the MK4 in white as diesel?
e11iottdalton 4 years ago
No, it was White when it was purchased. I've seen quite a few white MK4 Diesel's around here.

The Golf TDI Mk4 was available with 150 HP in Germany.
The new Golf TDI Mk5 is actually available with 170 HP.
bloobboo 5 years ago
That was the GT TDI, not the standard TDI.
Well it was in the UK anyway!

I rather have a Golf TDi with pure Biodiesel than some shitty Prius.
