  • he wants to be president and have all the citizens worship him on his birthday.

  • REPUBLICANS RULE OK!

  • @nickmarkham69

    REPUBLICANS RULE FUCK ALL

just a load of arrogant pricks!

  • New Monarchy Lite .... cause some people are just born better than you.

  • I am British and a monarchist, the question of whether Australia should sever its ties with The Crown is an Australian affair and has nothing to do with Britain, Australia is an independent nation and its destiny is a matter for Australians. You had a referendum in 1999 and the Australian monarchists won, I believe that many Australians feel the system of democracy works, so why change it.

  • Its an AUSTRALIAN MONARCHY who represents Australian values.

  • God save the Queen

  • @codownni That's exactly the problem. You shouldn't have the head of a country also being the head of the Church of England. It's not in the spirit of freedom of religion.

  • @7373walker

Well that would be true, if it where not for the fact that HRH is politically neutral and that England was founded upon Christianity.

  • @codownni What's her political neutrality got to do with anything? I think by implying that England was founded upon Christianity means it's okay for Australia to have as its symbolic head the head of the Church of England is implying that one religion should be given precedence over others. That's not in the spirit of freedom of religion, in which all are equal.

  • @7373walker

Afraid not, The United Kingdom is a predominately Christian Nation, founded on Christian theory and laws. Weather HRH is the head of the CofE or not doesn't effect Australia. If HRH was not the head of the CofE, then the U.K would be subservient to the Vatican. Please read some books.

  • @codownni Why should any secular democracy in the 21st century be subservient to any religious institution? Just because a country is predominantly christian (by population), it doesn't mean it shouldn't treat all religions equally.

Having the Head of State of Australia be the Head of the Church of England is contrary to equality of religion, you have not addressed this point at all. Just saying 'read a book' doesn't make you right.

  • @7373walker

The U.K and Australia is not subservient to any religious institution at all. All religions ARE treated equally, what are you talking about?

"Having the Head of State of Australia be the Head of the Church of England is contrary to equality of religion"

How is it? The Monarchy's role in the CofE has no effect on the politics or economics of either the U.K or OZ. It is a dual role for the Queen has no affect at all on the equality of religion.

  • @codownni You said the UK would be subservient to the Vatican, not me. I agree that all religions are treated equally (under the law at least) in Australia, and that it has little to no effect on the politics/economics of Australia. But I think symbolically it's still contrary to equality of religion, and as a non-christian it slightly offends me that under our Constitution we are still tied to a monarchy which is inseparably tied to a single religion. Not a huge lot, because it's not a big deal

  • @7373walker It's contrary in the same way that having as our monarchy an officially sexist organisation is contrary to our ideals of gender equality, though it doesn't affect gender equality in Australia. And in the same way that having a hereditary ruler is contrary to our democratic/meritocratic ideals, though it doesn't affect our democracy.

It's largely symbolic. But from a standpoint of holding to ideals of equality of religion, equality of gender and meritocracy, it is a symbol of shame.

  • @7373walker

Very strange, but whatever, I've better things to be doing.

  • The queen's birthday should be abolished? - SHE should be abolished more like! Along with her unaccountable, corrupt, sponging, aristocratic, and outdated, broken institution.

  • @phil1958uk Historically, the monarchy has been a power for moderation on the aristocracy, rather than being an endorser of it. What's outdated about it exactly? The fact that its origins stem from the past? Monarchism is a Hell of a lot more modern than republicanism. Democracy is ancient, and it hasn't yielded very good results in the 20th Century. This constant stride for "newness" is silly. It is an old institution because it is valuable. Unlike your opinions.

  • God save the Queen. Show some loyalty to your traditions and your civilization. Republicanism is a betrayal of what it means to be Australian, Canadian, or British.

  • @UnOxonien Eat your fucking queen for dinner, and then die, Loyalist cunt.

  • @makokun9 Royalist not Loyalist. I'm English not Irish. I am quite happy to be in a place that toasts to Her Majesty's health after a dinner - like civilized people.

  • @UnOxonien Relishing on such stupid, boring, unproductive, elitist and mediocre things is rather an idea of pseudo civilization, part of ideals that constitute today nothing but a living corpse. Monarchy shall end. It`s only a matter of time.

  • @UnOxonien Well...then in similar vein would you support that the Queen send her military to occupy my country (India) and turn it into a monarchy? Of course, if they tried that, we would roast their flesh and make the Queen eat her dead soldiers, but that is beside the point. I am asking about principle. By your logic, shouldn't the Queen of England invade India, USA and all other nations formerly oppressed by her family?

  • god save the queen!!!!

  • Just take the day off!

Republicans are such sticks in the mud they can't even stand to have a day off if it has to do with the Queen.

  • Since Australia would still stay in the Commonwealth, like Canada, after becoming a republ ic (the majority of nations in the Commonwealth are republics) so we wouldn't be severing ties with Canada, we would merely be breaking our link to the British monarchy. and allowing Australia to become a fully and truly independent and democratic nation. Why don't you try to get the same for Canada, then we can truly develop and even stronger relationship as two modern fully-fledged nations?

  • @davosz I am an American and I fully back this idea. Independance and freedom. The dream we had should be passed to those strong enough and enlightened enough to dream it as well and go for it. Preach on!

  • @davosz You're so right.

  • I'm Canadian. We celebrate the Queen's birthday too. You want to abolish the Crown and your ties with us? And besides, we all need a holiday in May. For us it marks the beginning of Spring. Why do you want to sever ties with Canadians and 14 other countries?

  • I think the monarchist rep shot himself in the foot when he himself admitted that only one in three Australians understands the place of the monarchy in the country's constitutional arrangements. To me, this isn't an argument against the ignorance of the people (an educated, First World nation in the 21st Century), but rather, against the relevancy of the monarchy to Australians. I feel that very much the same is true here in Canada as well. At least Australia has had a republican referendum!

  • North and South Korea are still at war. While outright combat has stopped, the two regimes are still hostile toward each other... and a peace treaty has never been signed. Australia, New Zealand and Canada are still colonies in the same way the Koreas are still at war. In practice, we are all independent... but we still all live in countries where no citizen can ever become head-of-state.

  • @grail68 This is true. All sixteen Commonwealth Realms have their head of state specified, and are committed to a personal union of their crowns, by acts that can only be amended by the British parliament. And while it's true that the Brits are committed not to do so without the consent of the others, its still remains that these are THEIR laws and only THEY ultimately have a say over them. I don't feel Canada, or Australia, et al., are truly equal and independent while that situation persists.

  • @whessly .... < This man knows.

  • @0858ben You have not the slightest clue about what the monarchy does or does not do for us, you channel ten/seven/nine regurgitating imbecile! You didn't see The Princess Royal out here touring after the bush fires? Dear God how blind are you Republicans then? More focused on finding as many ways as possible in which to waste our money on a stupid system we don't need!

  • @BorsBaledwyr an english women looked at bush fires? how did that help the situation? lol

  • @TomBarry192I Financial donations...along the Princes William and Harry...would of that that would have gone without saying to a person of logic, sound mind and body.

  • @BorsBaledwyr How much did the royals donate and how much of that was already the money of the Australian people?

  • the monarchy is totally absurd in 2010

  • no wonder australia gets no respect from developed countries.

  • @InkaPeru I thought the hallmark of respect was "respecting" other nations governmental and constitutional arrangements even if they differed to yours. That is what international diplomacy is based upon.

And I beg to disagree with you I think most of the worlds 192 nations have an enormous deal of respect for AUSTRALIA.

  • @CMFrenchEsq you are confusing respect with pity.

  • @InkaPeru PITY? Who would pity universal health care and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world? You do not even name the developed countries that "pity" us... come on put a little reason into your arguments...

  • You get a holiday for the Queens Birthday in Australia? In England we don't get a day for that.

  • Keep it, Fck the queen I want a free day off!!!

  • keep the queens birthday it's tradition

  • Support for an Australian republic from Canada!! We're in the same boat. get rid of this archaic nonsense!!! Abolish the monarchy and let's stop being hypocrites!

  • @hurley1 Canada can do what the fuck it wants but don't bring us down to your level. Australia hasn't forgotten its culture and heritage that's why we rejected a Republic 12 years ago

  • The republican HAS a point...

  • Just think, if Howard hadn't rigged the vote in 1999, we'd have had a decade without the crown by now.

  • @tallaussiebloke Thank Christ for Howard then

  • Comment removed

  • God SHAVE the queen! fuck that bitch we need a real Australian as our head of state.

  • @Amunication i'm british and i 100% agree with you. the monarchy should abolished. its tyranny.
