This is just messed up ,this song wasn't even made at the time it's considered new ,plus that's some pathetic belly dancing .. the director could have made this scene magical but he just screwed it .. oh well -sighs- **
This is just messed up how can this song wasn't even made at the time it's considered new ,plus that's some pathetic belly dancing .. the director could have made this scene magical but he just screwed it .. oh well -sighs-
Look very nice, BUT its, Arabic song in contemporary style "shaaby" by Haakim and in the movie it must be indian dance and music, lol, for western people its sounds the same, I guess, so unprofessional for high end movie production, no cultural education what so ever...just pretty, pretty, pretty
looooooooooool this is a joooooke i mean whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat u choose hakeeeeeeeeem and for god sake this song was a bout a few years ago and this movie is auppose to be in the 1815 this is just too funny and even the music wasn't that old i mean really what was that all aboutttttt
HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, that music wasnt even at that time!!!!!!
and that by all means is NOT belly dancing......HAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAA
and dont get me wrong im not critisizing reese witherspoon, i mean she's a gr8 actress and wat she did was good, but its just HILARIOUS how all these other back-up belly dancers dance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Know what? The first British man saw a professional belly dancer in mid 1800's for the first time. Before then they had only seen the prostitute wannabes in lower taverns. So no idea what the Professionals would do before then. So with that in mind I think this scene is fantastic! Demure, yet extremely risque in the period it is meant for.
For the people who said this is a bad coreography: What did you expect English women in the 17th century dance like? It was already shocking they took their clothes off.
I think its beautiful, its perhaps a more demure interpretation but still pretty good. .
Yes, it's totally unprofessional from the way of dancing, they should know how to dance on this song before using it. even though the clothes matches the song and dancing on it.
lolz Hakim was a great star on 18th century. Well the dance is not right, BUT i have to say that in a few moments are "reading" the song> I mean hip dorps or smooths moviments just like the music asks, it's a posisitive thing among the wrong ones.
they also trying to make it look like the indians are saying ''assalamu alaykum'' and thats arabic 2 different langauges so basically they are trying to say in this movie these hindis are speaking arabic to a modern 21st century song cause they lipsynch to it.
I think that they wanted to show that in the UK, and in that time, they were just out for entertainment. I don't think this was by accident, because the director is from India, but you bring up a great point!!!!
Wardrobe did an amazing thing on this movie! especially when you consider reese was pregnant during filming! inmagine her belly growing everytime! and you have to keep adjusting her costume so her belly won't show to much!
I agree with you and another thing, this is an arabic song and arabic style dance but it was India that was under British rule at the time, so wrong country.
with a film you can basically do anything. its art for goodness sakes. the film is what it is because the creator of the film chose to visualise it in that way. i dont think its any way meant to be historical.
this song is for an Egyptian artist called Hakim, and as I remmember it was prodused in 2003 or 2004, you can find the full version in this link (watch?v=i4k6k7l11O0)
and by the way why the fuck do people mix between indian and arabian cultures, they are totaly different.
why did they use HAKIM'S song in an 18/19th century movie ... this song appeared in Egypt about 1990 .... i mean its a major cultural and historical fact that this movie makers actually think that Arabs or Indians whomever these people are used to sing a pop Egyptian arabic accent song in the 18th century....
But this song was out in 2003 or 2004, when the movie took place in the 18/19th century. There are lots of better songs to put in this clip that represented the culture back then. I liked the movie but this has ruined it for me.
if you actually read the book vanity fair you will find out that in that period of time in england they were very influenced by anything Indian because they had just acquired it as a colony. the English lords and ladies thought it was very fashionable to mix the indian culture with theirs.
they werent dancing infront of the king... they were dancing infront of the lords.... and anyways... im not going against your critical views.... coz you are entitled to say whatever you want.... what am just trying to voice out.. coz if you only have seen the movie you will see why they have the arabic or egyptian accent here...
What you hear is the famous Egyptian singer Hakim, singing: 'Esalamu alaykum' (I've seen it spelt loads of different ways, but then of course it's from the Arabic script.)
I understand it is a greeting commonly used between Muslims and means 'Peace be upon you.'
yes I am. Can you compare him to hmmm lets see, Amr Diab, Tamer Hosney, Ragheb Allamah, etc.
He's just a famous "local" egyptian singer (sha3bi), to us Midlle Easterns (non- egyptians) he's just as Sa'ad Al Sogayar, and even Sha'ban Abdil Raheem.
I've lived in the Middle East all my life and I have to agree with you. However, this song is awesome and I'm thrilled Mira Nair picked it for the film.
I think the sexual tension is only present among the men ;) All the women look unpleasently shocked!I loved the movie&this scene too!!!Reese is great!

It doesn't make sense that a 21th century Arabic Hakim song used in a movie that has a 18th century theme and story...
couldn't they use an instrumental Arabic or Turkish song?just music?
that's the producer's and the director's fault
