@AJ942 Guan Di (or Emperor Guan, as he is curiously called, since Di means Emperor) was a general in the Three Kingdoms of China. Who did some interesting things, and was killed. Over time more and more stories about this semi-remarkable man were told and retold and he became bigger than life itself in China. Eventually he became the Chinese God of War, along with several other epithets. It's clear they knew who he was, since the chorus goes "Guan Yu" (His given name, before he became deified.)
