Maybe that's what I'm missing chicken broth because my peas always taste like something is missing. I did mines on the fly this year onion powder instead of real onions and garlic powder. Sylvia greens and boil a bag of brown rice. Ultra lazy :(
OMG! A southern girl who never knew about chicken broth in blackeyed peas! Shame on me. I am using this recipe for my "yankee" in-laws tomorrow night. We are having a North meets South New Years with their traditional pork and saurkraut (which I love almost as much as I love them) and my traditional blackeyed peas, mixed greens and cornbread.
Your sweet potato casserole recipe has been making me look like a genius for a few years now, I'm not messing around, this is the one I am making for new years! Do you have a cornbread recipe?
I agree with a lot of these comments! Married for 2.5yrs with my 1st child on the way! I don't get much cooking experience because my husband is a picky eater & doesn't eat soul food. I tried your mac&cheese recipe we both loved it! Will be following your pecan & sweet potato pie recipe this yr for Thanksgiving! I also printed out this one, your roasted chicken, collard greens, & your candid yams!! I will be awesome by the time my son is born and can enjoy the great food. Thank you!!
Hi Monique...I am southern too. Here's an easy trick when cleaning your peas: submerged them in water and all the bad peas will float to the top... and discard...swirl the ones around that remain with your hand or a spoon to make sure there are no more that will float to the top.
I've never used chicken broth, but I just started my beans and dumping the water and trying the chicken brother instead. I de-gas the beans first. I have never seen beans done in an hour. I always use a crock pot and ham hocks.
Thanks a lot. I LOVE down to Earth food. Im going to the store tomorrow and buy them black eyed beans.Dont know if they have smoked turkey, but i try smoked pigmeat if they got it.Wouldnt smoked pig leg meat make good broth on this one?? Thanks
Thanks for posting, I was looking for an alternative to the classic Black Eyed Peas with Pork/Collard Greens, and this is just the ticket. I live in S. America right now so I can't get my hands on smoked turkey, but I think I will give it a try with a hambone and some sauteed smoked bacon instead. Right on!
i think i speak for everyone no matter what race that loves to cook when i say you cant cook can you ?! you know instead of being an ignorant racist you should learn some great recipes/cooking tips from this young lady who lovingly takes her time to show these videos to us and try thinking from the other persons perspective if you were black and were called such a disgusting word i know you would be upset ,stop the hate here if you dont like the videos dont watch please! thats for the racists!

I usually use country ham seasoning pieces in all my beans. I was wondering how u think it might taste to use country ham seasoning pieces instead of the turkey in these black eyed peas? I will most definitly be cooking black eyed peas for the upcoming New Years holiday! =)
Should the beans be real tender from sautéing them or just a little? Cause what about when you cooking the beans in the chicken broth? don't they get tender in there from boiling them? And did it create a aroma around the house? I like when food make the house smell good.
wonderful video, I totally dig the idea of chicken broth instead of water, in fact when I made some earlier I debated tossing in a bullion cube, to make it easier to salt.
YES.. SMOKED TURKEY WORKS GREAT WITH BEANS...I USED IT FOR RED BEANS ALL THE TIME.. YOU ARE A FANTASTIC COOK. LOTS OF LOVE FOR YOUR GRANDMOTHER!!!! AND LOVE FOR U FOR PAYING ATTENTION!!! I KNOW YOUR HUSBAND IS REALLY REALLY HAPPY...THE WAY TO A MAN'S HEART IS HIS STOMACH IS SOOOOO TRUE...MY HUSBAND IS HAPPY. *wink**
Will it still taste good if I don't have chicken broth, onions okay basically all the ingredients in this video? I'm a starving college student who randomly brought some black eye peas and don't have the ready transportation to go out and buy the other ingredients. I have salt and pepper and some chicken though lol. I don't even have hot sauce man!
i'm a new cook...question how do u remove the smoked turkey? i just want to serve the peas without the turkey. also where do u get smoked turkey from the deli? yes i'm vey new to cooking.
You can leave the smoked turkey leg whole if you have a big enough pot. If you don't want to serve the meat but still want the smokey flavor I would just slice off a couple of really large pieces of turkey meat and cook that with the peas. When they are done you can remove them easily from the pot.
I made the black eyed peas for my dad (I don't usually care to much for them) He loved them, had to send him home with a big bowl full. I also had two servings! Once again you did not disappoint! Thanks for sharing your recipes.
Your tutorials are so easy to follow that even us single men can use them! I noticed that you use chicken broth instead of water in your collard greens and black eyed peas recipes. Can't wait to try them out!
I made your peas for my husband and they were soooo good. I am not a bean cooker but my entire family (including my picky children) loved it! Thank you so much!
I am so glad I found your videos and channel. I found you through an Ateyaaa video (Bourban chicken...want to try that by the way). Anyhow, I like to cook, but get tired of rotating through the same ole dinners. I look forward to watching your videos and reading your blog for ideas!
Cooked it tonight and loved it!! I used regular onion, next time I will try it with green onion just to compare. Thanks Monique and thank you Ateyaaa for the referral.
THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH for having a cooking channel--especially coming from a young woman! I am 31 yrs old, married, mother of a 21 month old son, & I work full time. You have no idea how I've tried to experiment with cooking, but it didn't work out the way I thought it would. LOL! Now I have VIDEOS to show me how to do things step by step. I will be trying this out very soon!
U are right on time with this recipe! I forgot to mention that I used ur mac and cheese, cornbread stuffing, and sweet potatoe pie recipe for thanksgiving! Thank u so much! And keep them coming!
