Teachers at school did not teach me how to read at all. My mother did. In most cases, children who are good readers learn how to read from their parents before entering the 1st grade. Many poor people work long hours, do not have reading materials at home, and cannot read themselves so telling their child to turn off the TV and read a book is foreign to them. When I was growing up my parents kept a library in our home with encyclopedias, autobiography's etc which drew my interest.
I am absolutely appalled that we live in the most prosperous, affluent, technologically advanced nation on the face of this earth and yet we have nearly a full 1/3 of our population that can only read at or below an 8th grade level.
Iam a baby-boomer with a high school&some college. I remember even back in the late sixties&seventies, I would go to the library&read for hours but most kids read only what they had too in school&homework. This is one main reason for illiteracy today-people dont practice reading&writing.FYI
I've met adults in the UK who can't read either whilst I was working as a receptionist. Makes me wonder how they go about their daily lives without such a (seemingly) vital skill.
@Wollinder92 same in mine but the schools in the US (form what i know) runs on a ranking system so insted of failing those who fail test's they lower the passing grade and thus more people pass the test and...well you end up with this
Illiteracy is literally caused by ignorance. Ignorance in society can not be fixed without other individuals being willing to enlighten them. A person could be illiterate for a number of reasons. The way the USA was set up was to give people the benefit of the doubt (Innocent until proven guilty). This applies to giving a person a benefit of the doubt that they are not 'just lazy', but they were never presented the opportunity to learn. I wonder if anyone would not want the benefit of the doubt.
I feel bad for him.:( Not being able to read would have to be extremely embarrassing. I'm not surprised that the U.S isn't doing so well in the statistics. No one cares enough to learn to or try to teach! Even though I have yet to meet a person who cannot read or write, I do believe eventually I will. Thats not good people!!!
lol it just dawned on me that many of the people on the internet that post stupid arguments are practically illiterate. I think literacy has a lot to do with the person and their willingness to understand. There may be some that are unfortunate but how hard can it be to pick up a book and find it's meaning....
Agree with laloni on this one, I'm tired of parents bragging about their kids achievements in college and universities, but they do nothing to teach others...very sad and at the same time pathetic.
Well you know EricSchwin22 some people don't want to learn. It is an achievement to make good grades and those kids put a lot of their own time and effort.. . I don't think that's pathetic.
"And.....psssst......my daughters are doing their PhD dissertations currently. They just got their Masters with Honors at AGE 20 if I might add. So that they can teach your daughters :D :D :D (pssstt....they have several jobs in the offing....no sweat)"
Psssst...Wow WEEEE! Good for your daughters, they've achieved something... I just hope you don't have a bumper sticker on your car glorifying their achievements.
I wonder how illiteracy this bad happens in the first place. I think it has something to do when and where exactly these reading programs were established.
And.....psssst......my daughters are doing their PhD dissertations currently. They just got their Masters with Honors at AGE 20 if I might add. So that they can teach your daughters :D :D :D (pssstt....they have several jobs in the offing....no sweat)

God bless, you are so funny TAKEnameARGH....guess our name says it all, huh :D
Wow, 14 percent of U.S. adults can't read according to the U.S. Education Department this week. A record compared to other developed countries.
32 million U.S. adults lack basic prose literacy skill, thats about 1 in 7 who are illiterate.
Millions of Americans struggling for their basic needs are relying on food bonds, standing in tows for hours. Last time the world saw that was in destroyed Germany after WWII. Is much worse in the US than I expected.
Its easy to take literacy for granted until you meet someone who is not literate. Thats because we learn at such a young age when our minds are less cluttered with crap, by the time we reach maturity, words manifest into almost concrete reality as either being inseparable with our interaction in society and each other or something to avoid. I find it amazing too though that people cant read, ive never met anyone who cant. but it just means they never tried.
@Lamentfordeath People who live within unstable homes minds are more distracted by the fear of the world and all itscompetition' like Cain and Abel parable' if a person cant communicate with themselves they dont know how to communicate with the world' inhibitions are degrading' and poverty is the root to mischief contributing to socialism to communism' the poor often have no rights to due process which only contributes to more degradations when children have no stability'
@DrFruedienslip You are kind of all over the place. lol. Anyways, I wouldn't think literacy would be that hard to learn. Its just like anything in life, try hard enough and its almost inevitable that you will succeed in some way. Its really just a matter of memorization. Unless one is mentally retarded there's no excuse not to learn.
@Lamentfordeath It is a matter of application, but many simply lack the drive' it is a very complex subject' but context is the main link to any sense of interpretation'
It's just not Buffalo. Illiteracy rates are off the charts everywhere. If you can help anybody to learn, do it. This has to be a grass roots deal. Everyone can help here.
Oh my god. You'd think Buffalo was still segragated. Still, no matter how many statistics come out saying "americans are getting stupider" no one tries to change much about it.
How is this even possible?
